Cool Film

I just watched an old movie that was recommended to me called "Freeway", starring Reese Witherspoon, which is a version of the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale, set in contemporary L.A.
Reese plays a 15 year old girl, (she would have been 18 or 19 when the movie was shot), who has to get to her grandma's place, cos the cops have taken her trashy mum, and creepy stepdad away to jail.

On the way she encounters a Mr Wolverton, who has no good intentions.

It sounds pretty silly doesn't it?

Well, strangely enough it was actually off the freakin charts awesome.

Witherspoon was fantastic in her role, as was Kiefer Sutherland as the Big Bad Mr Wolverton.

So next time you are wondering what to put on your netflix cue, give this one a whirl, I cannot believe I had never heard of this before, as I like a good action flick, and a good indie flick, and a good dark comedy flick, and this flick is all of those things.

Thanks, I'll have a look. never heard of it before, either.

My nominations for fabbo gems:
Black Snake Moan - I can't believe I liked it so much. Christina Ricci and Samuel L Jackson. And Justin Timberlake!! Apparently he can sing but god! he can definitely act.
Dean Spanley - an excellnt gem, Peter O'Toole, Sam Neal, Bryan Brown doing a fantastic ensamble piece. A small, fully formed gem, polished to perfection.

I tend to prefer a lot of mainstream movies. In recent years, 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button', Vantage Point and Avatar have been my favourites. Vantage Point is based on Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon.

Probably my all-time favourite was Empire of the Sun (1987), directed by Steven Spielberg.

I'm over the every movie or book has to make me think. And yes I like a lot of the mainstream movies. Let's face it a lot of directors (and editors) are pretty clever people.

Freeway sounds very interesting. Going to check it out.

Two favourites are
Harold and Maude....one of the few love stories I can stand. Funny and Black. Interesting also for the almost complete disappearence of Bud Cort from the silver screen after this movie. "If you want to be me be me, and if you want to be you be you....."

Kikujiro....a grown man dragged kicking and screaming into maturity with the help of a young boy and a journey...one of my favourite Japanese actors Beat Takeshi. Great tale.

Benjamin Button...enjoyed it and loved the concept even with some of the logical holes in this fantasy.

Imagine being 50-60 y.o with the hoped for wisdom that come with that age but having the body of a 30-20 y.o. to go and see the world. Wow!
Only partly understandable decision to leave his child...wrong one in my opinion to do it so early.
And the clash of the imagery where she holds a fresh beautiful baby that peacefully passes away from dementia and old age. Very touching, conflicting.

One of those scenes that Tarentino smacked me in the forehead with in Resevoir Dogs....with the radio song, dancing and torture all happening at the same time. Disturbed/laughing, disturbed/laughing..I'm tormented. This movie changed my appreciation of film and what I considered great movies.
