The other point about snow in the UK is that increased snowfall is perfectly in line with forecasts of increased precipitation. You can have a terrible winter of snow in the UK with higher overall temperatures.

A poorly thought out response to a newspaper is not exactly a scientific prediction.

Wentz et al. [2007] reported that global mean precipitation increased at a rate of 7.4 ± 2.6% per °C between 1987 and 2006.

Increased CO2 leads to increased warming, which leads to increased moisture on average - which in turn leads to further increased warming and increased precipitation - but it's by no means a uniform effect.

The thing that isn't settled for me is in determining the best way to mitigate the problem.  I'm not convinced that a carbon tax will do that, especially in the current political situation. They are more likely to be voted out with the result of no action for at least 5-10 years.

However, that's a people problem rather than a question of physical science. Maybe if we had a tax on coal exports and use some of the proceeds for renewable energy that could be a way of getting renewable energy projects off the ground. Alternatively give the miners the option of building renewable energy generation facilities. That way they get to control the new technology.

That is the case, the average Global effect will mean more heat, more rain & for some, the counterintuitive effect of more snow.

However, in some areas of the planet, especially those which already had a drier climate, the effect may actually be the opposite, including such places as S/West Australia, S/West USA & some segments of N/East Africa, looking at drying out!

In Perth, for example, we continue to expand on a near 40 year trend of warming & drying, with this Summer continuing the trend, BIG TIME!

We are now down to 24% of capacity, in the Dams and the major Gnangara underground acquifier, which supplies 60-70% of our water, is shrinking quickly.

However, the WA Water minister is not concerned, as he is an "unconvinced sceptic" of Climate Change and he is still not contemplating major or even medium water restrictions.

The alphabet letters D & H, come to mind, for some strange reason!

Has anyone seen what's happening to the daily SOI figures recently? I just graphed them. I've never noticed daily SOI's this high before, although it is around the equinox I guess.

1 Apr 2011
74.55

2 Apr 2011            62.15

Yes, Perth is experiencing unusually dry conditions while this part of Queensland broke all records for precipitation by a factor of 2-3 and gave me some major headaches at work.

And yet more WA desal planst are in the pipeline.

You have to remember what WA really is economically. I have worked there and lived there. Its one big profitable quary. And when I say profitable I mean proftibale for multinational corporations - remember for every mining dollar generated in WA about 65 cents goes offsure as profit.

So you cannot even exist in the WA parliament as a minister of an imporant portfolio unless you are subserviant to the mining and resources  corporations. If you have reservations you keep your mouth shut anyway or yorue out the door and in Both political parties!

So does it surprise you that the WA water resources minister is a AGW Denier?

To call him a skeptic is an insult to the word skeptic. Skepticism is a Greek word and means to think about and to question ideas, it is a fundamental pillar of the scientific method.

That graph shows temperature anomalies. From - 0.6 anomaly to just above 0.1 anomaly.

WHat is the 'normal' temperature, ie the 0?

Climate "science::

50 million
environmental refugees by end of decade, UN warns·
States urged to prepare for victims of climate change
· Natural disasters displace more people than wars

The modelling didn't work. Shurely shome mishtake.

The only mistake is the one you just made, the projections were pretty much spot on.

Quote:
Policy Responses to Climate Refugees: What Are Governments Doing?

Max Jerneck, March 2009

Environmental problems caused and exacerbated by climate change are currently responsible for an estimated 50 million refugees worldwide (UNEP/GRID-Arendal). That number is expected to multiply in the coming decades, as droughts, water shortages and natural disasters are made increasingly severe by global warming. According to Oxford Professor Norman Myers, the number of people uprooted due to climate change will reach close to 200 million by 2050 (Myers 1995). Environmentally induced forced migration as a major problem has long been acknowledged by scholars, NGOs and the UN, but has yet to make the agendas of nation states. A change may be underway, however, with the realization that the prospect of mass migration is not only a humanitarian issue but a matter of national security. Two recent official reports have the potential to influence policy makers in the European Union.  One of them is authored by the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU), a scientific advisory body to the German government. The document proposes an expansion of German and EU immigration policy to include preemptive measures to stem emerging migration flows. A similar message is proposed by Javier Solana, High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the EU, in a report to the European Council.

The Probability that Human activities such as fossil fuel combustion and de-forestation DONT increase the thermal retention rate of the earth's surface and atmosphere = zero

In fact its not a bad definition of zero.

And it's just SUCH a shame that Al Gore's 'drowning polar bears' have been discredited, and laughed at, by almost everyone on the planet...

You can share your nuerosis with everybody in here - we are all friends
