I have had a great appreciation of those thoughts, for some time!

"1) We are approaching the end of a long period of warming, which started in the depths of the last Ice Age."..
Umm no, the current InterGlacial period (the Holocene) which started about 12,000 years ago, and the Glacial Period (or Ice Age if you prefer) ended 15,000 years ago...

This is simply one of many 'warmer' periods with in the Glaciation....

I'd dispute parts of the highlighted analysis, but the explanation will take longer than this post.

We are in an interglacial, but most people with the exception of geologists use the terms "Ice Age" and glaciation interchangeably.

The actual terminology is not important. We can see from the ice core records that there is cyclic variation in global temperatures due to the Milankovich cycles. The actual period of those cycles changed about 1 million years ago from around 41,000 years to about 100,000 years.

The next glacial period is due in around 50,000 years. That will happen regardless of  what we do to the atmosphere in the next 100 years.

Again, it's all too easy to talk about a slow warming. You need to look at the actual data to see what is actually occurring. We can do that if you like.

Muso,
The highlighted area would be me, I think.

Perhaps there is a discussion about correct terminology, but whatever we call the various periods, one end is too bloody cold for a complex society such as we now have and the other end is too bloody hot!

Enough of the levity!

The facts are clear that -
1) We (humans) have impacted the recent part of this warming cycle.
2)  The Peak between the top of this warming cycle, compared to other recent gaps, shows that this current gap is already longer than usual.
3) As we have both said, it is certain that once the current warming cycle finishes, it will be followed by another Ice Age/Glacial period.
4) In my humble opinion, the sort of complex human society we see today, will have an uphill battle to survive the next Ice Age/Glacial period, whenever it arrives.

One end of the scale will be too cold for society......but unless the 'other end' goes over 10 degrees above the current temps......we will still be able to deal with it...

Do you think so?

10 degrees above current temperatures? Really?

Gizmo - if you're young enough, just wait until we see 2045. That will probably be about 2-3 degrees of warming. Do you want  me to dig out some papers on the effects on dwindling water supplies, differential migration of ecosystems, reduced calcification in marine organisms, including most commercial catches (Google otolith) etc. ?

Can you grow tomatoes in Summer where you are? I can grow them over winter, but not in Summer.  On the back of a packet of seeds, you'll see a map of Australia which indicates where certain  plants will grow. For many crop species, it's quite limited.

Just add look at the isotherms on this map and imagine them 3 degrees higher. Do the same for summer.

http://www.bom.gov.au/jsp/ncc/climate_averages/temperature/index.jsp

There are very few people who share your opinion that we could survive at anything like 10 degrees above the current.  Think what a seasonal 1 degree anomaly does to bushfire frequency alone.

I picked up this quote from the other thread. Interesting that you think that way. I am an eternal optimist. I'd like to think that we'll conquer the energy barrier. There are two things that will affect it - These are Global warming and Peak resources. Peak resources include Oil, Phosphates and a few other things.

With Peak resources, it's a question of demand outstripping supply in the first instance.

Maybe some commercial crops will grow somewhere on Earth with temperatures 10 degrees higher than today's. The question is more related to crop yields, land areas that are suited for cropping, rainfall patterns, coastal aquifer salinity etc.

It all comes down to the demands of a 6.8 billion population.

Do I share your view that humanity will no longer be able to live on Earth? No. I think that we have the nouse to survive.

I honestly think we'll eventually get things under control, but not without some pain.

Well I don't garden, myself......but my neighbour does......and they did grow tomatoes last summer I think...

And I've read various papers (and websites) that seem to indicate that equatorial regions don't have the massive fluctuations in temperature that the more 'polar' areas do..(although the articles only mention the northern Hemisphere).....

In other words, the increases would be far more 'extreme' in Northern Europe/America than in, say Queensland.....

According to the same people pushing AGW.....

The point is, humans first evolved in a climate between 3 and 5 degrees warmer than now...

We've managed to adapt and survive in temperatures that were up to 15 degrees C COLDER than now......
If we can exist in conditions up to 20 C colder than optimum, why will 5 C hotter than optimum be lethal????

Yeah, but that's NOTHING to do with AGW...it's to do with population pressure....
Let's be honest.....
You can 'post' all the brightly' coloured graphs you want...but since I DO NOT believe in AGW, or believe that AGW is 'driving' the current  global warming....the graphs might as well be Salvidor Dali or Pro Hart paintings...they have lots of pretty, bright colours.but they don't mean nothing...

So far, despite all the various graphs, charts and numbers....no one has YET convinced me that the current increase in global temperatures are anything other than natural increases in temperature, coming out of the Little Ice Age....

I'm NOT a 4 year old, to be distracted by bright colours and pretty patterns...you'll need to use logic to convince me that human actions are 'driving' global warming beyond natural, and normal increases...

And THAT may be a problem...since logic says humans are NOT the cause....

OK,  I've started to use logic to explain why greenhouse gases cause warming, and how we can measure the effects of them very accurately. The next stage is to look at the CO2 increase in the atmosphere and try to work out where it's coming from.

I can talk about the carbon balance if you like.

To some extent the problem is the population - not so much the population growth - I think that the latter will take care of itself.

At an earlier stage, we did live in warmer climates - big deal. Fish were abundant, fruit and animal life were abundant too, but the population was lower - maybe a few hundred thousand  tops. We could handle it. We could handle it with a small population in the future, but think of the tragedy and human suffering involved in getting to that point.

With our current population, we are living on a knife-edge - and that's the crux. If the temperature increases by 2 degrees, there will be major repercussions.

I guess all that remains is to explain logically how the projected greenhouse gas levels and the projected increase in temperature will affect us.

The projected climate changes would be largely irrelevant from a human perspective if we had a small enough population.

First, the 7 Billion Population IS the cause of AGW or Climate Change!

Second, I doubt there is anything, logical or otherwise that would sway yourself & many others!

Well, it's the usual case of 20% of the population causes 80% of the problem.

The science is reasonably easy to follow.

I'm sure you realise this, but to put it all down to a population problem is not quite accurate. When we start getting some major effects, that will cause attrition of the population, but the richer people who actually cause the carbon pollution will probably survive whereas some poorer people will die. So the problem doesn't necessarily fix itself when humanity starts dying off.

As far as fossil fuels are concerned, we have enough coal reserves to dig ourselves into an even deeper hole even if the oil reserves start to diminish. It is possible to make syncrude from coal. Therein lies a problem.

WOW....So global warming is caused purely by population numbers and NOT by Co2???????

If that's your definition of 'logic'.....it'll go a long to explain why you can't convince a lot of people......

I think he means the actions of the population.

Tell me which part you have difficulty believing and I'll try to fill the gaps. Again, I'm being totally factual and non-judgmental. Please do me the courtesy of reading my post, as I am genuinely trying to explain this to you.

1. CO2, methane , N2O and others are greenhouse gases. They result in increased retention of heat by virtue of the fact that they absorb and re-emit long wave infrared radiation in all directions that was otherwise heading out to space.

2. Although it is not a linear relationship, if we increase the levels of these greenhouse gases, we increase the greenhouse effect, and thus there is an overall warming effect.

3. Carbon dioxide is released when we burn fossil fuels, produce cement and cut down tropical rainforests. We can measure the quantity quite accurately because we sell fossil fuels.

4. Any additional warming from CO2 will be amplified by the fact that the average water vapour concentration of the atmosphere will increase as a result of the higher average global temperature.  Since water vapour is a more significant greenhouse gas than CO2, the temperature will increase another 2 degrees for 1 degree of warming due to carbon dioxide.

If we can establish that you understand the magnitude of warming expected by most researchers and how they arrive at it, then we can move on the discussing the effects.

As I said, you and many others will never be convinced.

Even when the ICE Caps disappear, you will still be saying it's just part of the normal cycle!

And no, I am not saying that the human Population is solely the cause of what is happening.

Clearly, there are Climate cycles, but just as clearly we (humans) are impacting what is happening, by loading up the environment, with ADDITIONAL GHG's  that are being generated by the fact that there are now 7 Billion of us & the entire Industrial & Defense complex that comes with us and causing others to be released.

Our current numbers & industrial base, are unique in the our (human) history and in the history of this planet!

I liken this situation to Wile E Coyote, who gets up a head of steam, whilst chasing our friend the Road Runner.

Good old Wile E is right behind the road runner as they approach the edge of  the cliff (Climate Tipping Points), the road Runner knows what's comming and that he has great brakes, so he screams right up to the edge and then stops.

Meanwhile, good old Wile E Coyote, who has his greedy eyes (Capitalism) fixed only on breakfast, realises that the Road Runner has stopped, so he applies his brakes.

But, his attention was diverted by greed a moment too long and good old Wile E is left hanging ten, looking down at the at the fall.

The Road Runner thinks for a moment, I can save Wile from his own destruction, caused by his own greed, all I have to do is give him a very slight pull back from the edge of the precipice and there will be a Hollywood ending for good old Wile E Coyote!

Then a moment later, comes the frame we see above, as the Road Runner realises that if he saves the Coyote, Wile E will again pursue him and the Road Runner gives Wile E the slightest of nudges, thus tipping Wile E over the edge and gravity then takes over to complete the job.

Unlike a cartoon, in life we don't come bouncing back in the next episode, as if nothing has happened!

In other words, a small nudge from us (humans) is all that is needed to precipitate Climate Change on a scale that will send us (humans) over the cliff.

The results will not be pretty, but hell who cares we won't be here to pay the costs, that will fall on following generations?

Is that right?
The only possible answer is no, it isn't right and we should take all mitigation possible to try to prevent it from happening!

Will we do that?
Given the human condition, probably not!

Very true!

In fact, Coal is already verging on Peak production of higher grades and as we shift into lower grages, costs will increase, but so to will emissions!

Well done....That is possible the clearest most logical post you've done...

Very good...Yes there are climate cycles....and yes humans are having 'some' impact.....the question I keep asking is ...HOW much???

From looking at most pro-AGW sites, it seems lots of the people running those sites think it's over 80%...
But consider, given the % of GHG's that humans produce is less than 4% of the total.....how can this be??
