You're missing the point. It was an intellectual property issue anyway, The Met office's Hadley Centre is totally separate from the CRU, and the data belonged to them.

That's probably right. I've missed a lot of points because the whole affair has been extremely difficult to follow. Any links to articles that can shed some light will be greatly appreciated.

That said, in my opinion, if you want to put your conclusions in to the public domain, then you should put your data in to the public domain as well. The law doesn't agree with me, but I think one day it will.

Not only that, but like most Meteorology Centres, they charged for that kind of data. It would have been unethical to release the data.

This is, once again, bollocks on stilts. Would you take medicine that was developed without testing, just because the R&D was based on 'intellectual propert issues'? What utter nonsense.

If they don't want to subject their data to attempts to falsify their findings (a.k.a. the scientific method), well, then they can bugger off and I am glad they are taking beta blockers to cope with the contempt and ridicule heaped on them. Anyone who still wants to base public policy just on their say-so is a charlatan.

This is an interesting thread. I am in agreement with soren, partly for the reasons we have outlined above, but also because the withholding of the data gives soren and other deniers ammunition.

Would you give away medicine that belonged to somebody else for free?

(or maybe charge them for it  Grin )

Anyway, you don't need to take my word for it -

Quote:
James Annan points out that it is the governments own policy of wanting ownership of intellectual property that is preventing the publication of raw data and code.

Paella - There is a link to the UK House of Commons Report on that last link. It makes for interesting reading.

They really didn't have any choice on the matter where Intellectual Property concerns were at stake.

SO on top of everything else, now they are trying to introduce a new way of doing science: patenting your data so other scientists who want to perform scientific research (and falsify your findings, the bastards) can be refused on some phoney user pays grounds. Did they buy the data themselves? I mean did East Anglia Uni pay all the weather stations for their reading over the years?

Brilliant. The fundamental scientific dissemination cannot be carried out - but hey, let's base world-wide public policy on their finding anyway!! But this is not a scam coz it's legal, innit.

On top of what everything? Didn't you read the House of Commons Report?

There was no data manipulation. Wake up to yourself. The Russian Secret service obviously have managed to whitewash you pretty well.

Indeed it does. Thanks Muso. Makes you wonder how it ever got so far.

That is beautiful!

Thatcher sets up climate research to discredit the miners. As always, the idea gets out of hand, apocalypse is forecast, the world will drown and fry within a century, it was prophesied to great applause, Nobel Prizes all round and an Oscar thrown in to  show that the scientific and 'artistic' communities at least, have reached consensus.

But then those damn Russkies, once again under the bed - or whatever it is this time that they happen to be hiding under - are trying to scuttle it all. It's Shtarker, I tell you, Chief. The KGB/Kaos tranformed itself in more ways than one since Thatcher's days and they have turned their minds to discrediting AGW to save Russia's oil and coal income (presumambly), or for some other reason, the science is not yet settled on that one.

Did you know that Joseph Heller was a writer on Get Smart? AGW is the new Catch 22. Absolutely unfalsifiable. That is brilliant for a supposedly scientific thesis. Very elegant, congratulations.

Good work Soren, you have just shown you cannot understand literature as well as science.
AGW a Catch 22????

If 'you' don't believe it proves it is real, is about as near as we could get to a Catch 22 analogy that would even approximate it's original meaning.

So I suppose it may have some validity for denialists. Wink

You know what? I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that you understand the science. You just like being contrarian. You don't like people telling you that you must do something for your own good.

Well join the club. Do you think I totally accept every official view just because it's official?

Do you think I enjoy telling you what I know to be the truth?

I've never fitted willingly into any mould. I am the person who refuses to accept how to vote cards from any political party because I make up my own mind on issues before the day.

I'm the person who absconded from University pracs (going back a few years now) because I preferred the company of a certain girl, and wrote them up the day before the assessment. (My final mark didn't suffer)

I'm also the person who almost got arrested in part of Africa for speaking my mind about an Army General who was a buffoon.

My position on religion is obviously non conventional.

So if you just like arguing against the establishment, you're wasting your time with me.

I haven't even been to any public Global Warming presentations, so you can't accuse me of being brainwashed.  (OK I went to one and was bored shitless)

Strange, I always thought Catch 22 referred to a logical paradox whereby a unit can only become member of a set if it can be demonstrated that the same unit is ineligible to become a member of that set.

Yeah - It's a situation where you can't win - like the Secretary who was fed up with not being able to join the club she was the secretary of.

- So she established her own club for secretaries in the same situation. Pretty soon the club was doing very well and they adopted a constitution that stated than they were obliged to accept any secretaries who were prevented from membership of their respective clubs.

Then they has to employ a secretary, and the secretary wanted to join the club.....

Of course she was ineligible to join because of the constitution.
Now due to the fact that she was denied membership of the club she worked for, the club was obliged to take her on as a member, but if they granted her membership, she'd be ineligible to join.......

Catch 22.
