Converting to Islam
Mar 9th, 2010 at 3:45pm

I have often thought of converting to Islam. There are things, however, that I find difficult.

Only eating at night for a month every year sounds hard. Also, you have to go to Saudi Arabia some time in your life and walk around this building. Oh, and you have to have part of your penis cut off. They want you to be like the prophet Mohammed.

The rest sounds okay. Be nice to people, give to the poor, pray to God, eat healthy food.

The clothing is very old fashioned. Dressing up like a medieval butcher would be fun, I guess. I don't like killing things, so I couldn't actually cut the lamb's throat or whatever they do. I'd have the falafel with homous and tabouli, thanks.

I'd like to grow a big beard and have little things to say all the time, like "as God wills it," or "peace be upon him." To be honest, I'd like to be peaceful, but I know that's asking a lot in this crazy world. What can you do?

Any advice you could give me would really help.

If you want Abu to respond sanely you have to use the right words. Unfortunately you erred with your first one. Converting is the wrong term.

freediver, just because you always frame your questions in a way as to imply things which just aren't true about Islam, doesn't mean everyone else has done the same as you and therefore is liable to the same treatment as you.

Karnal,

Quote:

It's not as hard as it sounds. And the self-control one gains is well worth the effort. It is truly an exercise in harnessing the soul and disciplining the desires. And think of how much more you will appreciate your food when you finally eat it.

I also gave up smoking during my first ramadan as well (which I'd tried many times previously to do, unsuccessfully), so it's a good time to cleanse the body and to get rid of things we don't want in our lives.

The pilgrimage is a wonderful experience. Coming together with the rest of humanity for such an event is undescribable and really makes you feel a part of the greatest brotherhood on earth.

This is not compulsory, only highly recommended.

Not quite the greatest of reasons to convert, but I guess different things appeal to different people Smiley

If you like to have little things to say all the time, then you won't be disappointed, there is barely an act that humanity partakes in, that doesn't have it's own little supplication.

My advice would be decide on whether you believe in the one true Creator, or not. If you have this one solved, then you are in business.

Alright, you're gonna have to at least tell why the mention of shaved pubic hair and armpits is offensive. Why else would you keep deleting my posts? If it's incorrect, then say so. If not, stop deleting it everytime I post it.

Jordan,

I mentioned in a private message to you why your posts are deleted, and why you're not welcome to post in the Islam forum anymore.

Since you blocked my messages, that's why you didn't receive it I guess.

Cease posting here.

Abu, I have no idea what you're talking about, I didn't even know you can block messages. Why not say on the public forum why I can't post here anymore.

Because I just realised what your avatar is, and because you keep posting inappropriate nonsense here in contravention of the Islam forum rules.

You only just noticed? Hahaha. Did the world stop turning? No, it didn't.

You're gonna have to be more specific with regards to the "inappropriate nonsense".

The pubic hair stuff and the talk of "moh". Use respect and sincerity in your posts and I'm more than happy for you to contribute.

Alright.

My mistake Karnal, you don't need to shave off all your pubic hair and arm pit hair. Maybe that was in the old days, living in the desert and all.

So, hypothetically, if Karnal did decide to convert/revert to Islam and after a time decided it really wasn't for him, what happens then? Do you have an anti- "baptism"(insert relevant Islamic word here) or just walk away?

I'd love to see what Jordan's avatar says. I can't see that close.

I have heard, though, that you have to have part of your penis cut off to do the Haj. Is this true? I'm not sure about the body hair, but I guess everyone goes to the barber when they get there.

Actually, do they have surgeons at the Haj that do the penis thing? You could probably make a good income out of this, although I'm sure this is frowned upon.

I saw this rich developer on TV giving out free food at the Haj. He was a billionaire. He was obviously doing a good thing, but there was something about him that looked dodgy.

There's probably something about ALL property developers that's dodgy, but this one was really slimey.

Oh, and I do believe in one Creator, although I think He/She has delegated much of the work to us mere mortals and other intermediaries in higher dimensions.

Why does Abu happily resign the pubic hair thing to history but not the stoning little girls to death bit?

I've resigned it (or anything) to history here?

You're off your rocker fd.

You just make this up as you go along don't you?

And where you got this nonsense about stoning little girls from is just beyond me. Such statements are true indication you've really got nothing to debate when it comes to Islam, have you? You gotta make it up as you go along, or you would've run out of material on the first day.
