Climate change is natural...
Dec 9th, 2009 at 6:45am

merry Xmas to all the alarmists living in denial...

Nature will decide Earth's fate ... climate change sceptics are wary. Source: The Daily Telegraph

AS the core samples from deep underground pass through the logging sensor before me, the rhythmic pattern of ancient climate change is clearly displayed. Friendly, brown sands for the warm interglacial periods and hostile, sterile grey clays for the cold glaciations. And for more than 90 per cent of recent geological time the Earth has been colder than today.

We modern humans are lucky to live towards the end of the most recent of the intermittent but welcome warm interludes. It is a 10,000 year-long period called the Holocene, during which our civilisations have evolved and flourished.

The cores tell the story that this period is only a short interlude during a long-term decline in global temperature - they also warn of the imminence of the next glacial episode in a series stretching back more than 2 million years.

Together with 50 other scientists and technicians, I am aboard the drilling ship Joides Resolution. JR, as it is affectionately known, is the workhorse of the Ocean Drilling Program, an international program that is to environmental science what NASA is to space science.

JR's drilling crew can retrieve cores up to 1km or more below the seabed and we are drilling today about 80km east of South Island in New Zealand. The ancient muds and sands that make up the sediment layers we pass through are the most important record of ancient climate that scientists possess. And they tell the tale that climate always changes.

Some core alterations are ruled by changes in the Earth's orbit at periods of 20,000, 40,000 and 100,000 years, others by fluctuations in solar output and others display oceanographic and climate shifts caused by . . . we know not what.

Climate, it seems, changes ceaselessly: sometimes cooling, sometimes warming, oft-times for reasons we do not fully understand.

Similar cores through polar ice reveal, contrary to received wisdom, that past temperature changes were followed - not preceded but followed - by changes in the atmospheric content of carbon dioxide.

Yet the public has been misinformed to believe that increasing human carbon dioxide emissions will cause runaway warming; it is surely a strange cause of climate change that postdates its supposed effect?

The now numerous special interest groups who continue to lobby for unnecessary and economically harmful carbon dioxide taxation need to appreciate that nature, not the world's governments, will determine future climate. Second, that there is no scientific evidence that warmings greater than the much-talked about 2C will cause environmental catastrophe; rather, this number is one plucked out of the air for reasons of political targetry and control. And, third, that to limit atmospheric carbon dioxide to 450ppm, also a widely touted figure, makes no sense, because past carbon dioxide levels attained more than 10 times this without known adverse environmental effects, while greening the planet.

Politically popular though it may be, the belief that atmospheric carbon dioxide is the primary driver of average planetary temperature is junk science. For instance, Earth experienced an ice age about 450 million years ago at a time when atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are estimated to have been 15 times the pre-industrial level.

It is simply science fiction to believe that 450ppm of atmospheric carbon dioxide and 2C of warming are magic numbers that somehow mark a "tipping point"in Earth's climate system. Rather, they are politically contrived targets, erected for the purpose of stampeding scientifically innocent citizens into a gaping corral of carbon dioxide taxation.

The simplest explanation for the mild warming that occurred in the late 20th century is that it was part of Earth's ever-changing pattern of natural climate change and the job of scientists is to seek evidence to test that interpretation. They have and literally thousands of scientific papers to date have described climate evidence that is consistent with natural change.

Despite all the efforts of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and the expenditure of about $100 billion of research money since 1990, no scientific paper exists that demonstrates that the late 20th century warming, or the past 10 years of cooling for that matter, fall outside the rates and magnitudes of past (geological) climate change.

Melting glaciers (but, in some places, advancing), rising sea levels (but, in some places, falling), increasing numbers of storms (actually, currently at a 30-year low), increasing numbers of polar bears and changes in migratory patterns of birds may very well all have happened or be happening. But these facts say nothing about a human causality for such changes.

It is not for the independent climate scientists (the so-called "climate sceptics") to disprove that dangerous human-caused warming is happening. Rather, it is for the alarmist scientists of the IPCC and CSIRO to show that the simple idea of natural climate change can be invalidated. This they have failed to do.

Yes - We expect to find this kind of thing popping up with Copenhagen now in full swing.

It's starting to be painfully obvious, but the incredible amount of propaganda that is being waged by the Energy companies (not directly of course) is starting to sway a lot of people.

For example, we have Svenmark stating that the current warming is perfectly natural, and that it's due to the sun. It's exactly like the Medieval Warming. At the same time, we have people saying that we're going into another Maunder Minimum type event, with sunspot levels at their lowest. So which is it to be?

- and if we're going into a Maunder Minimum, why have there been so many record temperatures in the last ten years?

You just have to dig below the surface to see that they are talking nonsense.

care to disagree with anything Bob has said?

oh and if you manage to stop all of man's CO2 emissions...  ahhhh...  what are you going to do about the other 97% "naturally" occuring?  hmmm?   Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

What are you going to do about Ian Plimer's parallel universe where the laws of physics are totally different to our own?

Bob - as in Bob Carter? What did Bob Carter say? You didn't reference that last load of bloggerbabble.

How's your cutandpastulitis? Getting any better?

Climate Change is natural?
Been going on for years?

So is death. We have overwhelming evidence that people have been dying for years, so the 6 million Jews who died in WWII were just part of a natural process.

Some people deserve ad hom attacks Grendel, and Bob Carter is unfortunately one of them.
He lurches from one discredited theory to another, seeking unsuccessfully to undermine legitimate climate science.

This does not indicate an open or even skeptical mind, but rather one desperately searching for any validation of his lonely and contrary opinions, very much like you do yourself.

He talks of an ice age looming still, as he has always done, but the fact is he provides no credible evidence to point to why this would happen, just merely repeats his prediction, in that regard he has more in common with a newspaper astrologist, than a real climate scientist, for like them, he seems to have a raft of predictions he recycles on a regular basis, with never a blush of embarrassment for reunning discredited gobbledy gook ad nauseum.

He may be very THICK skinned, or maybe we can just leave the skinned bit off? Wink

OK, give me one point that Carter makes that you think is valid, and I'll explain to you why it isn't valid. Some of what he says is actually true but irrelevent - a bit like Plimer's dissertation on the energy generated by man being miniscule compared to Solar Energy. Big deal - but nobody is disputing that. It's irrelevent.

I don't particularly want to read through his usual nonsense.

I'm not familiar with Carter, but he has made a valid point. The IPCC has really stuffed up lately - not only in reversal of certain predictions, but they are generally being careless. Just some errors picked up this year and there have been plenty since the IPCC officially released its Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) in 2007 - the  word on the science behind global warming.

If you go to the site - you can access links to all these "errors".

http://sites.google.com/site/globalwarmingquestions/ipcc

Quote:
2 January 2009: Misleading statement about ocean heat. The IPCC SPM says that ocean heat content is increasing, without mentioning a paper that shows recent ocean cooling.

9 January 2009: Ignoring research that does not fit the agenda.  Work of a Finnish research team with 34 publications in the field of tree ring temperature reconstructions is completely ignored by the IPCC.

16 January 2009: Inconsistent statement about wind strength. The IPCC SPM claims that the strength of westerly winds has increased - but if true this would be evidence for cooling of the atmosphere.

23 January 2009: Error regarding total radiative forcing. The 'total net anthropogenic radiative forcing' given by the IPCC is incorrect, according to climate scientist Roger Pielke.

30 January 2009: Unfair citation of criticism. IPCC author Kevin Trenberth cites his own criticism of the work of other authors, but does not mention those authors' response to his criticism.

6 February 2009: Ignoring criticism of the surface temperature record.  Many papers have been written raising questions about the accuracy and bias of surface temperature measurements, but these are ignored by the IPCC.

13 February 2009: No explanation for mid-century cooling. The IPCC has no consistent or valid explanation for a period of cooling from 1940-1970.

20 February 2009: False statements about tropospheric warming. The IPCC claims that the troposphere (lower atmosphere) has warmed more than the surface, but the IPCC's own graphs show that this is not true.

27 February 2009: Unsubstantiated claims of human influence. The IPCC makes confident claims about man's influence on the climate but has no evidence to support these claims.

6 March 2009: Misleading temperature trends (1). The IPCC claims that the trend from 1906-2005 is larger than that from 1901-2000 due to recent warm years, but in fact this is due to a sharp drop in temperatures from 1901-1906.

13 March 2009: Misleading temperature trends (2). The IPCC compares chalk with cheese in order to convey the false impression that temperature trends are increasing.

20 March 2009: False claim of warming since the TAR. The IPCC's claim that temperatures have increased since its 2001 Third Assessment Report is demonstrably false.

27 March 2009: More false statements on temperature trends.  The IPCC significantly underestimates temperature trends in the early part of the 20th century.

3 April 2009: Misleading claims about hurricanes. The IPCC makes unsustainable claims about increasing hurricane activity and a link with global warming; this lead to one expert resigning from the IPCC.

10 April 2009: If you don't like it, resign.  Some scientists who do not support the IPCC agenda find they have no alternative but to resign from the IPCC process.

17 April 2009:  Reviewer comments ignored.  The IPCC reports undergo a process of review by scientists and goverments. But many valid comments and criticisms of the IPCC view are simply ignored.

24 April 2009: Exaggerated claims of increased precipitation.  The IPCC summary greatly exaggerates the claims from its main report about an alleged very slight increase in heavy rainfall events.

You seriously need to stop listening to denialist bloggers Mantra, they are deceitful, bald faced liars.

They lie that the earth is cooling, yet 11 of the last 14 years, were the hottest ever recorded, since instrumental temperature recording began, 150 years ago.\

Now because 1998 was the hottest year ever, that fact that each year since then has not increased in temperature, has these liars going around saying that the earth is cooling, and it just is not so.

These lying jerks love to spout off about natural variation, but when the scientists explain that the 1998 peak was due the the strong El Nino adding to that years warming, and subsequent years have not had as strong an El Nino so the record stands, but the background warm has not gone away, just the fluctuating variables have seen the failure to surpass 1998 temps.

Unfortunately, we should not need to wait long to beat the 1998 record, probably next year, or 2011, when the sun comes out of it's diminishing radiation cycle, and another El Nino event occurs, which are both likely within the next two years, then we will very likely see a new highest ever record year.
We may even get a run of two or three new record hottest years, but then the solar forcing and El Nino events should start to subside, and we will see a slight lowering from those new record highs once more, like we have seen since the record of '98.
No doubt denialist liars will again claim we are cooling, but the facts will be that the global warming trend will be continuing, but with usual seasonal variability seeing some lower temps until the next record highs hit a few years after that.

The time has come for people to stop allowing these lying tools of the heavy polluters to drive their deceitful campaign of misinformation, and for people to stop allowing themselves to be so easily conned by these carbon vandals, and begin to reject idiotic blogger denialists, and visit real science sites, providing real scientific analysis and opinion.

Once enough people actually make the effort to examine the denialists lies for themselves, then they will have nobody left that is ignorant of their methods of deceit.

I've forgotten his name - it's on one of the threads on this board - but the head scientist of the IPCC actually changed his mind about global warming being imminent and stated that we were in for a couple of decades of global cooling.

It's not that I don't believe in man made global warming, but the IPCC and associated organisations and scientists need to ensure their theories or "findings" have no holes in them.

We can't be sold something unless we're convinced it's essential. They have to get their facts right so that when questioned, they can provide feasible responses.

Atomic and nuclear bombs change the weather pattern, so you would assume heavy pollution has a similar affect, but a more important and immediate problem than lowering carbon emissions,  is cleaning up the discarded filth and waste contaminating this consumer driven planet and its seas.

Fuel industries might emit unsafe levels of CO2 - but the bi products are even worse ie contaminated water basins, dams and rivers, toxic dam tailings, iron ore dust, oil spills etc. Nothing is going to be done about their waste or careless destruction.

Some of the industries listed might not have high emissions, but the collateral damage in production is far worse.

Mantra,

I would be more concerned about somebody who did not publish corrections and amendments.  It's normal in any branch of science to acknowledge modifications and minor changes. The objective is to get the information as robust as possible.

Have you seen Ian Plimer publish a list of corrections to "Heaven and Earth"? Do you think he's likely to issue a reprint with all the corrections applied? Don't hold your breath. He's really not interested in the truth. He just wants to spread confusion.

Spot on Mantra, we must not concentrate on Global Warming to the exclusion of all other major pollution issues, and that is another reason why we need to put this ridiculous, blogosphere driven, Denialim Campaign, behind us.
The science is settled, there is scientific concensus, no serious respected or reputable scientist denies it, and no studies support the ridiculous Denialist claims.
All their arguments have been comprehensively deconstructed, and absolutely refuted by scientists who would rather being doing constructive work than needing to waste time refuting an industry instigated campaign to promote confusion, and to continue to cause the type of delays that we have seen so far.

Once we finally put Denialist folly behind us, then hopefully scientists will not have to waste their valuable time correcting lies sponsored by major polluters who do not want to change their ways, and we can see other pressing environmental issues receive the attention they deserve.

Professor Latif, but if you read what he actually said, it was nothing what you wrote. He is by no means a climate denialist.

I like this You-Tube series, because Peter Sinclair aka greenman3610 is an extremely good communicator.

There are always going to be 'holes' in any branch of knowledge, Mantra. There are still some things we don't understand about the effects of radiation on the human body, yet we can still use it to treat cancer. There are some things we know extremely well and there are some things where there is more uncertainty. At this stage, on the question of Global Warming, the certainty is over 99%. It's pretty well certain. Colonel Mustard has practically been caught in the conservatory with a knife in his hand, and blood on his hands, stabbing the victim in the chest"

We're long past that stage. The Great Barrier Reef is a goner. They are talking about a +2 degree guard rail, based on risk assessment. If we can limit CO2 to under 500 ppm, let alone 450, it will be an amazing feat.

Quote:

While it's important, it's more important to reduce carbon emissions because if Ocean pH's continue to fall, the seas will be a stinking mass of uninhabitable marine desert.

A lot of work continues to be done in that area. It's by no means perfect, but industries are a lot more accountable now than they ever were. Take it from me, I'm just preparing for a huge audit in 2010. All other industries are getting the same deal.

1998 hottest year ever, ice caps melting?  Watch less tv please.

"The decade 2000-2009 is very likely to be the warmest on record,” WMO secretary general Michel Jarraud.

Here below is the real graph of the temperature data in recent history and the real highest temperatures over the centuries.

And how you can keep spewing out the same lies like this mozzoak and muso and still be a moderator baffles me.  31, 000 scientists with 9000 PHD's who know that global warming is a conspiracy on the other side at the UN only the 2,500 bureaucrats.

Their side hasn't been deconstructed nor even barely debated by anyone.  I don't know where you get these ideas from but it does worry me that you'll keep telling people these lies.

There has been no debating because the warmists attitude has been your own, 'the debate is over, the science is settled'.  That is utterely ridiculous and is a lie.  I applaud Grendel for repeatedly slamming you and your religious gullable followers but it doesn't seem to have much use.

The greenhouse effect affects the inner planets temperatures, through the atmospheric absorption of the heat emitted by the surface and its re-radiation back to the ground. This effect makes the temperature increase 5 ºK (1 ºK = 1 ºC) on Mars, 35 ºK on Earth and 500 ºK on Venus.

The main actors of the greenhouse effect are the carbon dioxide (on Venus, Earth and Mars), the water vapour (on Venus and Earth), sulphur dioxide and sulphur acid clouds (Venus), the water clouds (Earth) and the suspended dust particles (Mars). However, the dust and sulphur acid particles tend to heat the atmosphere around them but to cool the lower atmospheric layers, due to the absorption of the solar light.

I love that second graph you supplied Tom, would you care to reveal it's source?
I would love to put it in with this years Christmas Crackers, they are the usual resting ground for stale jokes.

This graph appears in many internet sources.

http://www.worldclimatereport.com/index.php/2008/02/11/a-2000-year-global-temperature-record/

You can see the obvious Medieval warming period in which global temperatures were above those of now.

Correct. This is pretty good evidence that the recent years have been consistently hotter than previous - We've been trying to tell you this - and your point?

Here below is the real graph of the temperature data in recent history and the real highest temperatures over the centuries.

No it isn't  LOL  Grin Grin Grin

We just don't have such a thing. Instrumental readings are fairly recent. (Listen mate - Is this a joke, or are you trying to be serious)

As for the more recent one, give me a break! What good are 13 month running averages. You need at least 15 year running averages for climate.  Grin Grin

Sigh - Energy and Environment  is not a reputable Science journal. It's a political paper. It doesn't appear on the ISI Listing for Scientific Journals noplace no-how. The papers are irrelevant.
http://science.thomsonreuters.com/cgi-bin/jrnlst/jloptions.cgi?PC=master

Here is the real graph based on peer reviewed science.  Note the divergence of the various proxy studies in older studies? That's because they are proxy studies based on things like tree rings.

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2000_Year_Temperature_Comparison.png

You can find the sources of the data on that page.

For the umpteenth time, it was a local phenomenon. The Medieval Warm Period (MWP) or Medieval Climate Optimum was a time of warm climate in the North Atlantic region, lasting from about AD 800–1300.

Even for some miraculous reason it were warmer than today and if it were global and not local, this information would be irrelevant anyway. Solar output has varied significantly in the past. No argument.

It's the rate of change in greenhouse gases and the impending rate in change in temperature that is extremely unusual, not the actual global average temperatures.

All we have for the medieval period is a set of proxies.

Are you kidding?

"Now because 1998 was the hottest year ever, that fact that each year since then has not increased in temperature, has these liars going around saying that the earth is cooling, and it just is not so./quote]"

Many news websites and and newsletters/papers are saying the same thing.  And that this decade is the hottest of all time.

The temperature has risen in recent years but there is 0, no way to and hasn't been proved to be in any way related to CO2 in the atmosphere.  Rises in temperature have been proven to rise before CO2 rises, obviously showing that the process is natural.

I don't know how many times I have to say it, I don't know how many times you're going to say it.  Conflicting arguments against the global warming religion have no standing.  The vast majority of legitimate scientists and climatologists are against it.

The 30 year graph shows plainly that the temperature has risen very little and that this should normally just be seen as a natural process.

As for the second graph:
There are dozens of very interesting ways to peer into the climatic past of a location, and Loehle included borehore temperature measurements, pollen remains, Mg/Ca ratios, oxygen isotope data from deep cores or from stalagmites, diatoms deposited on lake bottoms, reconstructed sea surface temperatures, and so on.

Are you going to deny the legitimacy of the graphs?

SO, you are going to deny dozens of other sources but listen to wikipedia.  Okay...  Not only is wikipedia changable by anyone at any time and I find it laughable that you are relying on wikipedia as a source, but the government has been known to change wikipedia articles all the time.  I think Wikipedia can be called political papers.

If the temperature is really that warm then why are the ice caps actually growing in the North Atlantic?  How can you relate the current climate to CO2 and not to solar activity?

Who said that? - reference? It's incorrect.

Quote:

Read the other thread. There is a discussion of the atmospheric physics there. I can't be bothered to find it myself again.  Once again, it's extremely basic science, and the causative link has been rigorously shown to be valid from laboratory testing, satellite monitoring and there have been hundreds of peer reviewed papers that demonstrate the link. The effect can be and has been tested. It's an open and shut case. As I said before, you can get a University in degree in Climatology, but you can't get a university degree in pseudoscience, or the denial of climate science.

Quote:

Spoken like a true convert.

The temperature rise over 30 years is very little - agreed. Nobody is disputing that.  Natural process? No. It can be confirmed that it is due to increasing CO2 levels.

Quote:
Are you going to deny the legitimacy of the graphs?

Absolutely. It's totally fabricated.

I'm not interested in Wikipedia. The original sources quoted in that article are however, perfectly valid.

In response to your point which I highlighted, it's because we can directly measure solar output from outside the atmosphere, and we can show that the recent temperature increase is not due to solar variation. Obviously the heat comes from the sun, but the increased temperature is due to an increased proportion of radiated infrared from the Earth's surface being absorbed and re-radiated by CO2.

Skippy is the one who quoted that and the rest were in agreement so I thought I might prove that false.

Okay, lets go back to the leaked emails and your 'peer reviewed graphs'.

"I can't see either of these papers (anti-global warming research findings) being in the next IPCC report. Kevin and I will keep them out somehow, even if we have to redefine what peer-review literature is!"

"I've just completed Mike's Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (i.e. from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith's to hide the decline."

Were those graphs made after this?

That's very nice that you are just going to call dozens of legitimate data as 'fabricated', all lies right?

No, the rise in temperature cannot be proved as being related to CO2 levels.  That is ridiculous to make that claim.  Your mapped out pseudoscientific physics and graphs don't matter if you can't prove it.

It has been done before by the Howard government which proves that it can easily be done by anyone and that wikipedia is not a reliable source.

Why would you want to apply tree ring proxy temperatures after 1961 anyway? After all, we have direct instrumental measurements for that period.

We have discussed the CRU hack in the last two days. You need to review the previous posts.

If you really want the truth, you should watch the 'Global Warming Crock of the Week" series and just think through if they are telling the truth or not.  Try applying an open minded approach to the subject.

I'd refute the 'hottest year ever' part anyway.  There were certainly hotter years in prehistory if you go far enough back. Maybe it should say 'since instrumental readings started' or something like that.

That's only what I've been saying Skippy, it's being reported everywhere and it's false.  You need to read my posts.

The 31,000 scientists and climatologists and 9000 PHD's as I've already stated.  No I don't know their names, but do you think they're a phantom fabrication too?

They are lead by John Coleman and the same side is supported by another expert Lord Monckton who is attending the Copenhagen meetings.  Look them up.

Oh I've heard of the 31000 confusionalists before, boofy is always quoting that number, I call them the 31000 faceless men, as non of them want their names mentioned, they just get confusionalist hacks like Piers Akerman to run their line.
What I'm most interested in is your line that only 2500 scientists believe in global warming, you know thats a lie ,dont you? why are you spreading that lie? deo you think if you say it enough people will believe it?
You seem familiar Tom, have we met? its not often a poster turns up out of the blue with such a strong confusionalist view.

Oh have you...?  When men like these and Lord Monckton have debates with warmists, they blow them out of the water.  If only Al Gore actually had the belief in his 'concencus science' to debate it himself.

There are 2,500 bureaucrats very few of them actually comprised of legitimate scientists at the UN that agree on the conclusion agree that humans are causing a climate crisis. It’s an assertion repeated by politicians and climate campaigners the world over.

But, AGAIN, lets compare that to the legitimate vast majority of scientists who oppose them but are ignored.

Tom -  Christopher Monckton, 3rd Viscount of Brenchley is not a scientist, mate. His only qualifications are in Classical studies and Journalism. The guy is a total buffoon. He pretends to be a member of the House of Lords, and he has been caught 'making up stuff'.  He isn't attending the COP15 Climate Change Conference.  He's attending a circus organised by the denialists.

You're still not helping your cause one bit mozzoak.

Christopher Monckton isn't a scientist, but he has the information from real ones that do their research outside the UN.  He has caught out the UN making blatant lies and mistakes in their global warming claims before.

He's been caught making stuff up?  Such as?

You're post in a nutshell skippy,

I know everything I'm right and everyone else is wrong.

You're response is often liar.  You obviously can't tell the difference between truth and lies when you just reject every conflicting argument.

You know that we know that we're lying?  How old are you?

I'm bringing you facts, you don't believe world government when those attending Copenhagen are saying it themselves, when if you had read the treaty I linked clearly describes.

lol, good on you for at least keeping your sense of humour soren, you are the only denialist here who I expect will eventually admit you were deceived by these paid schills who trumped up this silly denialism campaign in the first place.
It will probably take a while, but at least you still use your own reason, and do not just cut and paste silly denialist arguments all the time.

I just hope that the other welded on denialists find some other lunacy to fixate on, for they definitely need something they can identify as big brother to pillory, it is just their nature.(A naturally invariable nature Grin)

Ahahaha this is getting sad mozzoak,

Paid by the oil companies, deniers deniers deniers!  You're too funny.  You think posters on a forum that probably has less than 1000 people that even look at it are paid?

Okaay, now thats a conspiracy theory.  Denialist usually refers to those who blatantly refuse facts and evidence slammed in their face.

I'm bringing you facts, you don't believe world government when those attending Copenhagen are saying it themselves, when if you had read the treaty I linked clearly describes.

He's been caught making stuff up?  Such as?

The IPCC projection curves on his shocking pink graph are total fabrications. Read through the rest of the article and you'll find some more examples.

That's not a question of opinion. If you check the original IPCC graphs, they are totally different.

I wouldn't say that you're paid by the oil companies to peddle this drivel. The ones who are paid are further up the foodchain. Their objective is to inspire the likes of yourself to reiterate their nonsense.

Idiots!  Angry

Heartless? Maybe. We need to be ruthless at least. Forget the developing countries and let China do the responsible thing themselves. Instead of paying them money, we should be selling them technology for new Solar power stations, which we should building here in Australia.
http://www.csiro.au/org/Solar-Research.html

I think we need to think with a cold mind on this subject. The objective is to minimise the carbon dioxide being introduced into the atmosphere. The only sure way to do that is to build renewable energy projects. Forget about massive tree planting schemes, because the way things are going at the moment those forests may well end up being a carbon source (as opposed to a carbons sink)  by 2050 anyway.

Do I trust the ALP? No!!!!?

Yes Muso - it all sounds very good in theory, but the developing countries are being bribed into signing this Treaty obviously because they're hoping for large amounts of cash.

Seriously - do you really believe this rubbish?

It includes a commitment to limit warming to 2 degrees Celsius and - in brackets to acknowledge it is not yet fully agreed - the proposition that global emissions should peak in 2020.

Quote:
UNDERLYING tensions between rich and poor nations at the Copenhagen climate negotiations have boiled to the surface with the leaking of a "secret" draft agreement prepared by the Danish host government and a select "circle of commitment" including Kevin Rudd.

The leaked document rocked the United Nations conference as it settled down to its first full day of talks, with developing countries expressing outrage at its contents, and at the fact that it had been developed behind closed doors by the so-called “friends” of the Danish conference chair, Mr Rudd, UN secretary Ban Ki Moon and leaders from other countries including the UK, Sweden, Mexico.

The Danish Government protested that there was no “secret draft for a new Copenhagen Agreement” but rather “many working papers used for testing various positions”.

Privately negotiators were furious that developing nations had resorted to such a “hostile act” because they were nervous about possible outcomes in a final climate deal.

But despite the hosts' attempts to hose down the leak, it has ignited tensions that were not expected to spark until the top-level leaders segment of the talks next week.

Despite all the controversy, the draft “Copenhagen Agreement” contains many elements of a strong political deal, although it leaves blank critical emission reduction commitments and the amounts to be paid into new funding for developing countries for final determination.

It includes a commitment to limit warming to 2 degrees Celsius and - in brackets to acknowledge it is not yet fully agreed - the proposition that global emissions should peak in 2020.

But developing countries and conservationists were deeply concerned that it did not set a timetable for a final binding agreement, nor specify that such an agreement should be in the form of a legally binding treaty, nor propose a future role for the existing Kyoto Protocol.

Environment groups joined in the condemnation, with the WWF fuming that the “behind the scenes negotiations have been focussing on pleasing the rich and powerful countries rather than serving the majority of states who are demanding a fair and ambitious solution”.

Oxfam climate adviser Antonio Hill said “like ants in a room full of elephants poor countries are at risk of been squeezed out of the climate talks in Copenhagen. As the talks ramp up and the big players put forward their proposals for the deal it is vitally important that vulnerable countries are part of the debate.”

Mantra,

If we need to do anything urgently, it is to keep the atmospheric CO2 concentration below about 450ppm by whatever means we can.

Forget about global warming. The CO2 is increasing by about 2ppm every year. It should come as no surprise where that's coming from. Simple maths can tell us that. Even simpler maths (450 - 387)/2 gives us the number of years, and shows us that at current levels of emission, we'll be at 450 ppm before 2050.

Laboratory tests using that kind of atmosphere equilibrated with sea water shows that corals can't grow fast enough to keep up with erosion when that happens. There are a whole lot of other effects that will cause major problems in the ocean. Unless we do something, the once blue ocean will be a heaving evil smelling mass that can support no complex life, possibly as soon as the end of this century.

As far as sea level change is concerned, I think you might just be able to out-walk it, even if you're wheelchair bound Smiley

There are other major implications of course. If temperatures go much above the 2 degree guardrail, most of the foodcrops, particularly rice, will have a rapid and spectacularly diminishing yield.

Then there is the water situation. As glaciers continue to melt, there will be vast populations without access to water supplies. Already China is planning some huge dams to catch as much water as possible.  Other neighboring countries might object to them hogging the water - don't you think?

The 2 degree guardrail is based on risk minimisation. My personal opinion is that it's probably to late to achieve that, but we need to do everything possible.

Soren, If we had a global nuclear war, that might actually have the effect of stopping global warming too. Whether more people might survive 1. a nuclear war or 2. our continued practice of burning fossil fuels remains to be seen.

Of course we might end up with both yet.  Wink

At what stage in the world's deteriorating climatic condition will you actually admit that we are having an effect. Will the demise of the Great Barrier Reef be enough? You'll have to survive another 40 years at least to see that.

In that context, I was talking about ocean acidification. In terms of actual climate, there are some worrying trends, but so far we haven't got to the stage where there is anything more than a subtle effect.

I did not imply that we had reached the stage where there was a marked deterioration yet. I just mean to ask you at what stage in the (future) deteriorating climate would you be satisfied that it was a genuine effect?

Good. Now that the circus has gone, we might be able to get down to more serious discussions.

You say 'worrying trend' once more ...!!! Roll Eyes

Stop using climate change and antropogenic climate change (ACC) as interchangable concepts. My whole point, in every ost, is that theyare not interchangable. Ever evil denialist freaks' central point is that they are not interchangable.

Climate change - out of our hands. Adaptation is the only possible answer. We are good at that. Antropogenic climate change - I don't accept it. To me, it is a conceptual impossibility. It is helpful that there is no scientific or any other compelling evidence for ACC.

So I noticed that you remained silent on ocean acidification (or pH reduction). That's a pretty direct mechanism, and you'd have to be pretty ingrown not be acknowledge that as a problem.

Where do you stand on that? It is possibly the most serious problem as far as I'm concerned, and it's not related to the 'warming' effect of CO2 in any significant way.

I'm interested to see if you reject all science, or just science that happens to be politically inopportune.

I'll get back to Climate change in a moment.

There is 20 times as much CO2 in the oceans than in the atmosphere. What CO2 there is in the atmosphere is a trace gas, even after 200 years of industrialisation. Since the atmosphere is not the main source of CO2 in the oceans, I would look at the main sources of oceanic CO2 for 'worrying trends' of acidification.
Just looking at the earth's surface - not the depth of the oceans - 70% is oceans, 30 % land. That's an awful lot of water (and not a drop to drink) to go all wobbly because of a trace gas in the air.

Just because there is movement between atmospheric and oceanic CO2, it does not mean that whatevever acidification may be happening must be because of this movement.

Is that naive/vicious/irresponsible enough?

PS
Personally, I suspect it must be the smacking whales, the goats of the oceans, clean grazing all the little organisms that would be eating up all that CO2 producing dead algea. It's the whales that are causing oceanic desertification. Wink If you look at the graphs, oceanic CO2 levels tarted to shoot up around the time whaling was banned.
But I'm not a scientist so this is only a hunch...

No - I'd rate it as obtuse. Possibly deliberately obtuse, but for the sake of trying to keep things civil, I'll bite my tounge and not say what immediately comes to mind(YFI), because you probably read it somewhere on the great blogosphere and have taken it for granted.

I sometimes wonder whether you are simply baiting. This is basic chemistry, Soren. You got that 20 times figure from somewhere - I'm not sure where, but it's actually more like 93% in the oceans expressed as carbon. (If you got it from Grendel, I hope you disinfected it first. I suspect I know where he gets his information)

There is an equibrium between CO2 in the oceans and in the atmosphere. If you increase the temperature or reduce the pressure, the CO2 will start to be desorbed from the ocean.

It's a bit like adding CO2 to water from a CO2 cylinder (you know the ones you use to make soda water that you drink with your single malt? When you release the pressure, the CO2 comes out of solution.

Well of course you find more CO2 (or carbonate/bicarbonates) in seawater than in the atmosphere.  It's a consequence of the fact that CO2 forms carbonates and bicarbonates when you dissolve it in water.

THere is a close relationship between ocean pH and atmospheric carbon dioxide. Is there any point in talking about the chemistry?

What is the probem?

"In CO2-rich Environment, Some Ocean Dwellers Increase Shell Production " What's wrong with that?

In a striking finding that raises new questions about carbon dioxide’s (CO2) impact on marine life, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) scientists report that some shell-building creatures—such as crabs, shrimp and lobsters—unexpectedly build more shell when exposed to ocean acidification caused by elevated levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2).

Because excess CO2 dissolves in the ocean—causing it to “acidify” —researchers have been concerned about the ability of certain organisms to maintain the strength of their shells. Carbon dioxide is known to trigger a process that reduces the abundance of carbonate ions in seawater—one of the primary materials that marine organisms use to build their calcium carbonate shells and skeletons.

The concern is that this process will trigger a weakening and decline in the shells of some species and, in the long term, upset the balance of the ocean ecosystem.

But in a study published in the Dec. 1 issue of Geology, a team led by former WHOI postdoctoral researcher Justin B. Ries found that seven of the 18 shelled species they observed actually built more shell when exposed to varying levels of increased acidification. This may be because the total amount of dissolved inorganic carbon available to them is actually increased when the ocean becomes more acidic, even though the concentration of carbonate ions is decreased.

“Most likely the organisms that responded positively were somehow able to manipulate…dissolved inorganic carbon in the fluid from which they precipitated their skeleton in a way that was beneficial to them,” said Ries, now an assistant professor in marine sciences at the University of North Carolina. “They were somehow able to manipulate CO2…to build their skeletons.”

Organisms displaying such improvement also included calcifying red and green algae, limpets and temperate urchins. Mussels showed no effect.

“We were surprised that some organisms didn’t behave in the way we expected under elevated CO2,” said Anne L. Cohen, a research specialist at WHOI and one of the study’s co-authors. “What was really interesting was that some of the creatures, the coral, the hard clam and the lobster, for example, didn’t seem to care about CO2 until it was higher than about 1,000 parts per million [ppm].” Current atmospheric CO2 levels are about 380 ppm, she said. Above this level, calcification was reduced in the coral and the hard clam, but elevated in the lobster

The “take-home message, “ says Cohen, is that “we can’t assume that elevated CO2 causes a proportionate decline in calcification of all calcifying organisms.” WHOI and the National Science Foundation funded the work.

That's correct, and some corals, and particularly, deep water corals are not affected, however a number of important species are affected, and they include phytoplankton and coccolithophores, which are important food chain organisms.

Although calcification rates increase for certain species, the mineralisation is more predominantly calcite rather than aragonite based. Aragonite is a much harder substance. The increasing CO2 will affect organisms that produce aragonite to a much greater extent, and some of those, including fish themseves, are important for commercial fisheries.

There is a secondary effect due to the decrease in coccolithophores, and that is a direct decrease in ocean albedo which will increase warming of surface waters.

I saw a paper which showed common phytoplankton (the basis of the ocean's food chain), actually grew faster under simulated increased atmospheric CO2. So perhaps fisheries productivity could be enhanced by more CO2.

Unlikely. It's a complex system. Fish are dependant on the healthy development of aragonitic otoliths for balance and orientation.  Whole ecosystems are shifting geographically with changes in ocean temperature. Unfortunately they don't all move at the same speed.

One of the few positive spins at the moment is that crustaceans are less affected than other species, so perhaps lobster will become a cheaper alternative.
