No wonder so many foreigners run into trouble and die here. Bear Grylls is an idiot. I hope no-one takes him seriously. For the unfamiliar, he is the star of a 'survival' show called man vs wild where he demonstrates everything you should avoid doing at all costs if you get lost in the bush, just in case you need to do it. Even with the episode in Alaska it was obvious to me that he was showing people the dumbest things you could do.

I still think it's a cool show. It just troubles me how he exaggerates the obvious dangers while glossing over the more subtle ones. It's a recipe for disaster. Like when he was in croc country in the kimberley - he was 50 meters from the river bank on flat, open ground. He kept furtively glancing around as if a croc was going to come sprinting out of the distant tree line and run him down. He even said the freshwater crocs were dangerous because they could run so fast - a whopping 10MPH. Then he goes further from the river and says he is safe now because of the brolgas and wallabies around him. WTF? In the Alaska episode, he climbed down the middle of a freezing cold waterfall, turning the camera angle so a steep slope looked like an almost vertical drop, too make it look dead easy. People die doing that. Plus, he never gives the most basic rules for survival situations, because it would undermine the whole pretext of the show.

All he would have to do is call it an adventure show rather than a survival guide and stop mentioing the survival BS. The show would be just as interesting, and he wouldn't be misleading people into thinking he is demonstrating survival strategies.
