I believe that car exhaust gas also causes solar flares, and the heliosphere to degrade.

The science of global warming is junk science, but it's like Multiculti, you are a planet destroying nazi if you question it. So roll on, like the trials of Salem.

Doesn't much matter in the end.

Are any of you actually familiar with the science, or are you speaking from a position of ignorance?

You don't have to be a scientist to be familiar with the science of global warming. That's like saying you need to be a priest to talk about God.
On the other hand it is very easy to see some people are ignorant to that science for numerous reasons but I suspect the main ones are that many of the ignorant ones
Believe in God, so cannot come to terms with him not controlling everything.
Are right wingers that think climate change is just a GREEN conspiracy.
Are employed by companies or have vested interests in companies that are major polluters.
Or worse of all, all of the above.

Global warming is not a science. It is emotionally charged political issue that has nothing to do with a god(s) if you don't believe me ask Calanen he says that he atheist. On another hand some environmentalist zealots do respond to  t0 disagreement with religious fervency.

Anthropogenic Continental Drift: An Incoherent Truth
Industrial Nations Threaten Globe Again

A new menace to the planet has been discovered and validated by a consensus of politically reliable scientists: Anthropogenic Continental Drift (ACD) will result in catastrophic damage and untold suffering, unless immediate indemnity payments from the United Sates, Europe, and Australia be made to the governments of non-industrial nations, to counteract this man-made threat to the world's habitats.

Science in Unquestionable

The continents rest on massive tectonic plates. Until the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the mid 18th century, these plates were fixed in place and immobile. However, drilling for oil and mining for minerals has cut these plates loose from their primordial moorings and left them to drift aimlessly. "The potential for damage is truly catastrophic," said Hans Brinker, a spokesman for the International Panel on Continental Drift (IPCD). "The continents are adrift due to the ruthless capitalist exploitation of the environment for profit. Unless immediate steps are taken to halt all oil and mineral extraction, we can expect a massive surge in earthquakes and volcanos by next Tuesday." The representative seemed close to tears during his announcement, a clear indicator of the severity of the threat.

ratbag!

You cant debate to save your life... all you do is name-call and ridicule...  ignore and deny what isn't convenient for you to recognise.  Well buddy in a few years when its clear we aint heading for imminent catastrophe...  you better get used to eating humble pie or dodging them.

There'll be T-shirts out by then saying...

   I am an idiot!
I was an alarmist

Oh my God whatever happened to the tipping point  etc, etc, etc...

Oh dear but we become alarmed over a few years eh FD...  remember we've been alarmed for quite a few years now since the cooling and dimming and rewarming...  etc...

So how many years do you think we have b4 we have to act if the alarmists are right? 2? 5? 10? 20? 50? 100?

I mean we are racing to put legislation through right now.

So do you believe man can control the Planet's climate system?
Do you think this can be achieved by cutting our CO2 emissions?

Well I will respond by saying that your initial question is open to broad interpretation.

Now if you had asked can man significantly effect climate, then the answer is an unequivocal yes.

Now if you consider, planned, releases of certain particultes, to achieve certain outcomes, as control, then you could then go onto say that man could control the climate, but as with nearly all important questions, it is a matter of degrees.
Yuk, yuk, yuk, pun intended.

The sad fact is that we may yet need to attempt some of these climate engineering ideas to counter warming effects, because denialists have so successfully stalled most meaningful programs which could have reduced the severity of the warming effect we are now unable to avoid.

Good job arseholes.

So, to put it plainly - I must be an iddiot because it is unconceivable to you that your argument is, in fact, unconvincing.

I asked this before of all you man-made climate shamans, er, sorry, scientists - what is the falsifiable part of your arguments? Which part needs to be disproved for you to concede that your hypothesis is unworkable?

Just so we are all scientific and not shamanic/journalistic/political/bolshevic/ etc, etc.

The existence of a tipping point does not imply imminence. It could be 100 years away. It could also be tomorrow. We cannot be sure.

Yes it's amazinghow quickly we can aquire knew understanding.

The IPCC is setting targets for major emissions reductions by 2050.

Quote:
I mean we are racing to put legislation through right now.

Yes it would be easier to deal with it sooner rather than later. That is more of an economic issue than an environmental one.

Of course.

Yes. Cutting methane and other GHG emissions would also help.

I've been accused of not living in reality - so this concept of modifying the global temperature should be easily absorbed by my imagination - but it's not.

FD - seriously will any of the politicians spruiking this temperature change goal still be around by 2050 and what will they compare it against?

I'm not saying we shouldn't clean up the planet and make a decent start investing in renewables - but this is just an outright lie and there are so many people who believe it.

Mantra, mantra, mantra, et tu?

Quote:
this is just an outright lie

????, I suppose it is a bit like the con of man landing on the moon, just another conspiracy where tens of thousands of people maintain an unbroken code of silence to cover up the con?

If you didn't fall for all this conspiracy garbage mantra, you would be able to look at this through more objective eyes.

Contrary to all the lies and misinformation spread by denialist loons, the IPCC has gathered the best information, from the best sources, and given some pretty stark warnings, which is then supposed to be discounted, because a handful of extremist loons working out of tractor sheds say it is all a giant conspiracy to get research grants.

I have yet to see a single, credible argument from the denialists.

Salient points that are worth noting are, denialist claims, are examined, and answered, by real climate scientists, so their mischievous claims are debunked, while critical issues that are raised by real scienntists, are just evaded by denialists, and that speaks volumes to me about which side has a credibility problem.

I'll butt in and give some good reasons why this is a con job, or at the very least speculation only.

Firstly the IPCC is just another arm of the UN and their website is pitiful. Secondly this.....

Quote:
While the leaders agreed that global warming should be held to two degrees celsius in an attempt to combat climate change, no specific targets were set for emissions reductions in the medium term.

http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/1048497/Climate-pact-will-need-hard-slog:-Rud...

So - no emissions reductions in the medium term. Strange - so how will we meet these goals? Maybe we'll start in 2020?

Thirdly...and from the mouth of the IPCC itself..

Quote:
To predict the future global climate change, several greenhouse gas emission scenarios were developed and fed into computer models.

They project for the next century that, without specific policy changes:

•global mean temperature should increase by between 1.4 and 5.8°C (2.5 to 10°F).
•the Northern Hemisphere cover should decrease further, but the Antarctic ice sheet should increase.
•the sea level should rise by between 9 and 88 cm (3.5" to 35").
•other changes should occur, including an increase in some extreme weather events.
After 2100, human induced global climate change is projected to persist for many centuries. The sea level should continue rising for thousands of years after the climate has been stabilized.

All these should's because they've developed scenarios and fed them into a computer which has spat out what they want us to hear.

So all these terrible scenarios could occur - yet world leaders have decided on no immediate target to reduce emissions. Of course they're talking about a 60-80% reduction by 2050 - they will all be retired or dead by then.

Aside from the new carbon taxes which we have to pay for in the meantime - when is this government really going to go green? All these global discussions are doing is ensuring the oil and fossil fuel industries maintain their profits. Renewables in this country won't get a look in.

Mantra, I agree with that part. The Oil and Coal lobby is still very strong in this country.

Of course, we also have unions behind the push to protect workers in those industries, so it's not all about Right Wing versus Left Wing.

I don't trust the ALP in this, and they have yet to show their true colours. I don't trust their management abilities.

The global discussions (eg Copenhagen) are intended to address the threat.

The reaction to the threat has nothing to do with saving the environment, or polar bears, trees etc. The entire motivation is about preventing a human tragedy, although it's all linked.

If you think it's a con job, then I tend to take it personally.  I feel a bit like Buzz Aldrin when confronted by someone who told him the moon landings were a hoax. Like Buzz, I'm affronted by people who say things that I know to be lies, and the problem is that others believe them.

The range of scenarios was selected to cover various levels of action by world leaders in terms of emission reductions. The worst scenario is a 'do nothing - business as usual scenario"

I don't understand your point. Try referring to some of the sites I suggested.  The IPCC site is by its nature very technical.

Muso - why would you take it personally? Aren't you an advocate for nuclear energy?  This is all about pushing for NP ultimately - nothing to do with emissions - that's just great spin.

Of course saving the environment isn't on the agenda - I mean let's control the weather, but who cares whether the earth can supply enough food, water & shelter to sustain the population.

As far as trusting the ALP - they are the same as the Liberals, although it's becoming obvious that Rudd is a bigger liar than Howard. Both parties have identical agendas and it's all about big business - not the idiots who vote for them.

In regard to the moon landing - there will always be a question mark beside this "amazing" achievement. They've never managed to get back there and strangely - NASA has lost the original photos. The greatest feat on earth and the original photos are missing. Never mind - Hollywood is coming to the rescue.

NASA loses Apollo moon footage, but Hollywood restores it.

Please don't tell me you doubt the moon landings. I remember watching the burn that took Apollo 11 out of Earth orbit. They have recently shown pictures of Tranquility base from orbit.  I have spoken to crew members on board MIR and the International Space Station via radio.

Nuclear power would have the desired effect of reducing emissions, but ultimately Australia is a very small player on the world arena.

The best thing Australia could do is to sell the Uranium elsewhere and concentrate on Solar and Geothermal energy, using some of the Uranium profits to fund it.

Selling the idea of Nuclear Power to the Australian population may be impossible.

I've had some exposure to carbon trading. I think I explained how it works on here at one stage.  It should be quite effective if implemented properly (ie not like Europe)

I really like Mantra, and am pretty sure that even though I feel she is the one who has been conned into falling for all these conspirinut theories, that just like Grendel, and Soren, and most others who choose to speak against Global Warming, as if it is a giant hoax, they all would support lowering our emissions, because they want to see all forms of pollution reduced.
It is just unfortunate that this issue has so effectively been sidetracked by the initial PR campaign designed by the same company who convinced an extra two generations that smoking wasn't bad for you.

We must apportion some blame onto the alarmists as well, whose "Cry Wolf" mentality increased public cynicism to the point that nothing is ever acceptable on it's face value, irrespective of the motives or credentials on display

I think we probably need to take a step back from even trying to get denialists to face the facts, because they refuse to even examine them honestly.

I think we need to accept that the common ground is our shared humanity, and a shared belief that we should try and do the best we can for future generations, and the planet, by changing our behaviour, to reduce the amount of pollutants we put into our environment, and just agree that no matter what raison d'etre you choose, reducing our gross over consumption of non-renewables, is a good step toward more responsibly living our lives.

Now that is delusional.

The initial pr campaign was that bag of lies "An inconvenient truth."

If you want to decrease industrial CO2 emissions fine...  but don't try to tell me it will control the climate and don't tax me for it.

Personally I'm looking forward to the class action in 10-20 years when CO2 is still high and temps are low.

The popculture referrence of the cartoon is very apt and not merely topical. A lot of this climate change stuff is a little bit of science and a whole load of youf culture sloganeering and save the planet baloney.
You must have the menatlity of a Jacko or a Bono or their pop culture ilk to think that you can control the planet's climate - especially that now we can agree to limit warming to 2 degrees or whatever nonsense tey are spouting lately. Laughable.

Well this is indicative of why you don't get it.
Time and time again, people have explained that climate change is not just a simple turning a knob up or down scenario, but you are stuck with that concept in your head, so you simplistically reject things you misunderstand.

Your garbage about recent cooling is akin to a doctor with a fever patient who had a temp of 105F , that dropped to 104F saying that he is now OK, when he is still critically ill.

If your problem is with alarmists, then I would have thought that arming yourself with facts, and countering them with accurate scientific forecasts would be more worthwhile than hanging on to discredited bunkum, and confusing people with conspirinut theories.

30 years is considered long enough to call "weather" patterns climate.

BTW don't try to tell me whats in my head when you don't understand the first thing abut the issue and why your position is so tenuous.

If you weren't so in denial about every fact that counters your position you'd have a leg to stand on unfortunately you don't

Oh and here's another thing you can deny...

Quote:
climate

Condition of the atmosphere at a particular location over a long period of time (from one month to many millions of years, but generally 30 years). Climate is the sum of atmospheric elements (and their variations): solar radiation, temperature, humidity, clouds and precipitation (type, frequency, and amount), atmospheric pressure, and wind (speed and direction). To the nonspecialist, climate means expected or habitual weather at a particular place and time of year. To the specialist, climate also denotes the degree of variability of weather, and it includes not only the atmosphere but also the hydrosphere, lithosphere, biosphere, and such extraterrestrial factors as the sun. Seealso urban climate.

Mozzaok,

The real 'denialists' are perfectly aware of the facts. They are hired hands. The likes of Richard Lindzen has already enjoyed bullshitting for the tobacco industry and he has a taste for professional lying and arrogance.  He has enough intelligence to know that he's lying. The same goes for John Christy and his offsider.

In Australia, I'd argue that Bob Carter is in the same boat. David Evans probably isn't. He basically just wants to make a name for himself, because he was too mediocre in what he did to make an honest living.

The remainder of Australian denialists are mostly jokes. They have been assimilated by the Borg of Climate Confusion. They literally don't know their arse from their elbow. Jennifer Marohasy falls squarely in that category.

Well Grendel, I will bear that in mind, the next time you rerun another bebunked denialist lie, and refuse to even look at the links provided by muso which show real scientists, explaining why the claims are false.

Your bandwidth handicap is weighted heavily against examining real evidence, from real scientists, it seems.

Oh dear...  I've never denied that we were in a warming phase.
I never denied that man increases CO2 levels.
I've never denied that CO2 is a greenhouse gas.

See how much you've missed out on.

Why do you think we are in crisis?
Why do you think its mans fault?
Why do you think that cutting man-made emissions will make a noticable difference, or stave of the "crisis"?

Oh right...  because the alarmists told you so....  altogether now.

Temperatures have been trending down and yes we have been in a warming period...  not contradictions there Bozo.  Now we are at the beginings of  a cooling period.  I consider it started after 1998.

Careful with that rope you'rE only tripping yourself up.

OK - but watch that grammar. "have been' is less ambiguous than 'were'. "Were' implies the subjunctive case. Like "If I were a rich man".  Subjunctive - ok?

so - I've never denied that we are in a warming phase would be clumsy English. It's better to say I've never denied that we were in a warming phase.  A negative phrase with 'that' takes the subjunctive.

I'm glad to help you with your English Grendel. Just ask me if you need more help.

As a matter of fact, we are currently in a warming phase.

Well the people best qualified to comment would be the people at Hadley Centre in the UK who issue the data in Hadcrut.

Here is what they have to say:
Quote:
Climate change goes on. Average global temperatures are now some 0.75 °C warmer than they were 100 years ago and since the mid-1970s average global temperatures have increased at a rate of more than 0.15 °C per decade. Yet over the last 10 years temperatures have
risen more slowly
, causing some to claim that global warming has stopped. Here we explain why this is not the case and explains that observed changes are entirely consistent with our understanding of natural fluctuations of the climate within a trend of continuing long-term warming.
The evidence is very clear that global temperatures are rising and that humans are largely responsible.

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climatechange/science/monitoring/

That must be right if you accept their data without question  - right Grendel?

I'm not going to re post everything I already have about that Bozo I have articles and graphs that refute your interpretation of that.

let me put it in IPCC speak... 1998* was the peak year and  every year since has been less  therefore temps are going or trending down if any are above that on concensus it must be an anomaly

Don't get flustered now - I'm just asking you if you accept Hadley's data and commentary.

Note - it's not my commentary. It's straight from the people who publish the hadcrut data set.

Now what exactly are you saying? Who do you trust here?

OK,

So let me get this straight, your definition of lying now includes asking questions, and quoting direct from Hadley Centre with absolutely no interpretation whatsoever?

Seems like a strange definition. Why should I look up your doctored data when I can get it straight from Hadley Centre, who issues the data you're quoting anyway? Better to get it straight from the more appropriate end of the horse don't you think?

If they say that the temperature trend has not been cooling, that's good enough for me.

OK Bozo my reference to you lying this time was about saying I was flustered.
Remember that lie?
I mean you have so many to recall.
DWMT clown.

Oh and BTW I haven't doctored any data  and unlike you I can read a graph properly.  I can even tell when they don't document it properly.

yet another of your lies.

Mozz...  I read from both sides of the debate...
Now piss off you're starting to bother me.

BTW Grendel, in typical craven fashion, you evaded responding to this, pretty pertinent question, that I posed to you earlier.
I will repeat it, as denialism seems to inspire poor memory, if the repeating of debunked lies is any indication.

Enlighten me grendel, give me your top three reasons for believing the IPCC is performing a global con job.

That is your contention after all.

Too tough for someone as widely read, and comprehensively ionformed on the subject as yourself to tackle is it?

How long ago was that?
Are you sure I actually saw it...  I mean you wouldn't name call and carry on without being sure of something...  right?

I'm pretty sure I addressed that Mozz...  go fetch.
In fact I'm pretty certain I did.
Hmmm. Perhaps mantra answered it for me.

BTW in lieu of repeating myself... I don't think your question comes anywhere near addressing what I think.  I'm not a conspiranut.

Well Grendel, are you lying, or just mistaken?

The question is on page 2 of this thread, and you have not offered any answer at all.
It seems that memory theory is gaining more credence.

Now previously I have stated that when ever you are faced with addressing something you can't cope with, you avoid, evade, and abuse, and so far you live up to that without exception.

How about you make a positive change, and just answer the damn question for a change.
For someone who is so supposedly assured of his position, you seem very wary about actually backing yourself, in being able to provide an adequate response.

Grendel,

You certainly didn't comment on my post. Doesn't it give you a clue? Doesn't it even make you think twice about it when the Hadley Centre, who actually issued the data you keep posting came up with a comment that is at odds with what you are saying and what you read on your sitez?

Or is it a question of accepting the data and rejecting their commentary?

Mozz was asking me about commenting on his question nothing to do with you.

I suggest if your hung up on the graph you just posted that you reread what I said, then go fetch the info I posted about such information before.

Or take a bex and have a good lie down.
Your confusing yourself.

You know what I'm asking about, but you just dodge the difficult questions. I don't want to see what you cut and pasted previously. I'm more interested in what the scientists who issued the data said about it.

The 'sitez' I'm talking about are the disinformation sites you continually cut and paste from.

And you need a holiday from disinformation. Well I wont be posting much in the next month - I'll be off-continent, so you won't have so many hard questions to face up to.

The difference with me is that when I get a hard question, I want to find the right answer to it.

Don't mean to interrupt but

Quote:
Climate change goes on. Average global temperatures are now some 0.75 °C warmer than they were 100 years ago and since the mid-1970s average global temperatures have increased at a rate of more than 0.15 °C per decade. Yet over the last 10 years temperatures have risen more slowly, causing some to claim that global warming has stopped. Here we explain why this is not the case and explains that observed changes are entirely consistent with our understanding of natural fluctuations of the climate within a trend of continuing long-term warming. The evidence is very clear that global temperatures are rising and that humans are largely responsible.

That last bit, "and that humans are largely responsible" cannot be gleened from the data. If atmospheric CO2 is the measure of human agency in temperature change then it should have been much faster in the last decade as CO2 emissions incresed much steeper than temperatures which rose more slowly.

Also - from the graph you wouldn't know that there was a massive, coal-based industrialisation in the 19th century in Europe and North America and coal fired engines and railways spread all across the globe. What was the impact of that on the data?  From the graphs you'd be forgiven for thinking that the 19th century was as cold as a grave digger's arse. And what was  the temperature data for the pre-industrial period?

Also - what is taken to be the 'normal' climate is merely an average of a recorded period. Is it not possible to say, on the basis of these graphs, that the climate is warming only in the sense that it is coming out of an unusually cold period (19th century), which was cold despite the massive increase in atmospheric CO2? That is, undisturbed by human CO2 emissions.

Go to any reputable scientific site and see all those furfies you trotted out addressed Soren.
It is, quite frankly, surprising to even see anyone use them anymore, as they have all been thoroughly put to bed as denialist drivel, long ago.

However what is of more note is kenny coward's continued evasion.
Lying that a few words used as a put down somehow addresses any of the real questions posed, shows the calibre of the argument, and of the man making it, in this case both shallow, and reeking of insincerity, that borders on open deceit.

Have they used the same measurement methodology and grid 100 years ago as now or is it again rhetoric of "it was cold in the morning and warm in noon..."?

I am not 'using' them in some scheme. Man made warming is not an open and shut case and saying so is not denialist drivel. If the atmosphere is a blanket, any amount of CO2 making that blanket denser or thicker ought to show up in warming IF CO2 is so decisive. But the century of industrialisation does not show up.

It is not my heresy that the case of antropogenic warming remains unconvincing. The theory has by now reached such complexity that the originally posited direct correlation between CO2 and warming is unsustainable. What started out as warming is now 'change'. But the desire for politically motivated control and intervention burns just as brightly.

Why? Well, the inquisitorial sentiments evident in your heretic-exposing language,  like 'denialist' drivel',  simply confirms that the case for antropogenic global warming is socio-political dogma and group-think for most people, dogma which even the adherents can't quite master or grasp in its detail. And I don't blame you. Best to refer to the authority of sacred texts, the 'repurtable scientific sites'.  But scientific sites are miriad. Reputation, like beauty, it now seems, is in the eye of the beholder. What you mean by reputable is what you agree with. At any rate, General Motors was a reputable company a year ago. Reputations change unexpectedly.

You may call it 'denialist drivel', I think of it as resisting the Spanish Inquisition, which nowadays is anything but unexpected. What a change 30 years make in the intellectual climate!

Good. I'm impressed.  Wink These are good questions (I mean that not in a patronising way). I will respond to them in some detail today and add the answers to the sticky thread for future reference.

As far as the 19th Century is concerned, when we examine the actual emission data, we'll probably find that it was several magnitudes lower than recent times. The population was also significantly lower, and the sinks (eg tropical rainforest) were much higher. I'll add numbers to that answer and address your other points later.

If you were to open your mind to all possibilities, you would rapidly come to the conclusion that there is no argument, because we're left with possibilities versus impossibilities.

Unfortunately the work of thousands of climatology scientists is perfectly valid. There is no valid counter argument.

In order to mount a counter argument, you need to publish - in serious climatology and scientific magazines - not economic ones.

Soren,

World Production of coal in 1905 for example was 924 million short tons  or 838 million tonnes. Oil production was minimal.

World production of coal in 2007 was 7080 million tonnes, then we had an Oil production of  78.9 million bbl.

As you can see, the rate at which we consumed these resources even in the early 20th century was down by a factor of about 8 (ok?) on today's annual consumption/production.

Yes - If we cut carbon emissions by 87.5% and went back to 1905 levels (or better - to 19th century levels), we'd definitely see a difference.  Cold as a grave digger's arse?  well yes, comparatively speaking.

Part 1 (unhighlighted) is correct, but we can glean that information from things like the global carbon balance. We know how much coal and oil we burned (as I've said before, accountants keep a good track on those kinds of statistics)  so we can work out how much carbon we're putting into the atmosphere.

Good. I knew I posted that basic guide for a reason.  You'll find this explanation for FAQ 1, in the 'sticky section' at the top of Environment.

You'll notice that the slope of the line has levelled off slightly since 1998. This is largely due to the Strong El Nino in 1998 and the predominant La Nina in recent years. La Nina events cause an upswelling of colder water from the ocean depths, causing a temporary cooling effect on average global temperatures. We are currently in a mild El Nino, so this trend is expected to change within the next few years.

Massive increase in atmospheric CO2? - What massive increase in atmospheric CO2? It rose from around 280ppm to around 290 ppm between 1800 and 1900. (3.5%) Compare that to the period between 1950 and the present day. It rose from 300 to 385ppm (28%)

It's chalk and cheese.

The 21st century is about 9 times dirtier - possibly even ten times, because we make more cement.

It's not just a question of how dirty it is, but how much we burn. What? do you think it's all about soot?

Soren, do you honestly think that we burnt coal at a faster rate in the 19th century? (Please answer that, because I'm getting concerned about you)

If we were burning coal at 19th century rates, we would probably not have a problem.

Soren, muso is quoting scientific statistics, from real scientists, he doesn't just make stuff up.

He really tries to just help people look at the best info possible, that is why it must be frustrating when people choose bloggers, over actual published scientific studies, as sources for accurate information.

He has always been patient and courteous, and just tried to help people access that info, but some refuse to look, and some get abusive for even being asked to look, at what the real scientific work says.

Are you telling us that 19th century industrialistaion, almost entirely fuelled by the dirtiest of coal, increased atmospheric CO2 by only 3.5% over a century?
I don't believe it.

I am not talking about rates of burning.
I am saying that we have a very well documented recent historical period when coal burning skyrocketed COMPARED TO the previous century and millenium. What I am saying is that compared to the bucolic, agrarian, village based 18th century (talking in broad terms), the rapid industrialisation of the following century represents an identifiable period when CO2 emission skyrocketed - but no commensurate warming is detected in the graphs.

So:
IF CO2 is the measure of antropogenic warming then there should be a discernable warming in the industrial age COMPARED TO the pre-industrial age.
If antropogenic CO2 is the culprit, it ought to show up. It doesn't.  Why?

Why? - because the effect (the signal if you like) of the low level of CO2 was well below the noise in the 19th century. If you look at the graph on Post 4 in the sticky thread, you'll see the relative contributions of different forcings, and you'll see that the greenhouse gas 'signal' didn't emerge until around the late 50's.

The Earth acts as a perfectly good buffer - within limits. In the 19th century, that was the age of David Livingstone and Mungo Park. Tropical rainforests were still largely intact. When do you think the industrial age really started to kick in anyway? around 1850?

The ocean even now, still absorbs around 1/3 to 1/2 of the excess CO2 that we produce. Back in the relatively pristine 19th Century, it absorbed considerably more.

We also produce methane of course, from gas production etc, but methane doesn't last long in the atmosphere.

This is the graph I mean.

I'm not trying to con you, I assure you. You may not realise it, but you have been sucked in in a major way, like many other people.

Now - do you see how the Greenhouse gas signal emerges around 1958?

Up until then, it was lost in the noise of volcanic activity, solar activity and aerosols etc - some negative, some positive.

According to the graphs the Mother Nature can and did this far produced much more climatic variations then humans during all their years of existence.
Is there any guarantee that if all human related processes will stop the Mom is going to stabilise?
That is assuming that we are not part of Mom's  regulatory mechanism and have to do what we are designed to do.

Well - that's correct up until the last 50 years or so, Tallowood.

What you ask (in bold) is a very good question. Maybe we should start a new thread on it.  I don't have an instant answer, but there has been a lot of research done on that very question.

I'll attempt to answer it in detail at a later date.

That is a good and scientific answer. When you analyse the situation think about a man walking on a rope stretched in space-time but the rope is not tied by men but has life of its own.

Soren,

I have nothing against skepticism, and I also hate it when anybody tries to take away our way of life, or give my hard earned money to the dole bludgers. We're not talking about a return to communism or  a new retro fashion for tye-died shirts and bell-bottoms and reefers.

We are talking about a gradual change in technology in a way that will preserve our prosperity. Poverty sucks. I've seen the direct  relationship between prosperity and respect for the environment in West Africa, where the environmenta norm is - "If it moves, eat it"- "if it burns, burn it" - "If it's pristine, sh1t on it"

Examine everything carefully and cross examine, but in the end, be prepared to change your views if you do come to the inevitable conclusion that maybe you were wrong.

I'll see you again in September.

Maybe those who aren't advocating one scenario or the other are those who are prepared to change their views when there is proof that taxing us through the roof will alter the climate. The wealthy will still keep using as much energy as they need for their comfort, but there will be many more people suffer as a result of this. In NSW alone there are about 180,000 people who can't afford electricity - which is disgraceful.

In NSW coal fired power stations aren't regulated for emissions, and we know that above a certain level, CO2 causes heavy pollution - yet we are being forced to pay 20% more for our energy - for what - so the power stations can chug along unrestricted with unsafe levels of emissions and continue to increase their profits. How will this alter the climate for the better?

You have even said yourself Muso this new goal to change the climate has nothing to do with the environment which means we are being misled. Mozzaok is right when he says we should work towards a common goal, but at least feed us information that makes sense.

Brief post only.  I must buy a full sized kb for travelling.

The way that the  ALP are going about emissions trading is flawed, and I tend to agreewith the Libs on that.

They need toget their act together.  I had hoped Australia would lead on this, but it looks like we'll just have to follow the lead of others.

Operating without some system  for paying for carbon combustion is like manufacturing goods without paying for waste disposal.

The whole system needs to work with minimal disruption to the economy, however coal fired power generation can't be viable long term - or I'd be surprised if CC ever works properly. A 90% capture is not ideal, but it's a step in the right direction.

Personally I'd like to see all options pursued, including nuclear. Realistically, it ain't going to happen in Australia.

I don't care which government does it. I'd just as soon vote for the Libs if I thought they had the balls (and ability) to get a  good scheme working as soon as possible.

Read and weep - or laugh (like me), depending on your temperament and your position on the alarmist-denialist spectrum.

Quote:
A chemical reaction
Thursday, 30th July 2009

When the worm finally turns, it really gets itself into a flat-out spin. More and more scientists have just about had it up to here with the rubbish being put out as the ‘consensus’ on man-made global warming. Marc Morano reports how members of the American Chemical Society (ACS) have risen in revolt against the group’s editor-in-chief -- with demands for his removal -- after an editorial appeared claiming ‘the science of anthropogenic climate change is becoming increasingly well established.’

The editorial claimed the ‘consensus’ view was growing ‘increasingly difficult to challenge, despite the efforts of diehard climate-change deniers.’ The editor now admits he is ‘startled’ by the negative reaction from the group’s scientific members.

Poor bewildered soul. He really thought he had written what was undeniably the case. Here are some examples of that ‘negative reaction’ he produced:

ACS member scientist Dr. Howard Hayden, a Physics Professor Emeritus from the University of Connecticut: ‘Baum's remarks are particularly disquieting because of his hostility toward skepticism, which is part of every scientist's soul. Let's cut to the chase with some questions for Baum: Which of the 20-odd major climate models has settled the science, such that all of the rest are now discarded? [...] Do you refer to ‘climate change’ instead of 'global warming' because the claim of anthropogenic global warming has become increasingly contrary to fact?’

William E. Keller wrote: ‘However bitter you (Baum) personally may feel about CCDs (climate change deniers), it is not your place as editor to accuse them—falsely—of nonscientific behavior by using insultingly inappropriate language. [...] The growing body of scientists, whom you abuse as sowing doubt, making up statistics, and claiming to be ignored by the media, are, in the main, highly competent professionals, experts in their fields, completely honorable, and highly versed in the scientific method—characteristics that apparently do not apply to you.’

Morano points out that this revolt is but the latest in a series of recent eruptions against the so-called ‘consensus’ on man-made global warming:

On May 1 2009, the American Physical Society (APS) Council decided to review its current climate statement via a high-level subcommittee of respected senior scientists. The decision was prompted after a group of 54 prominent physicists petitioned the APS revise its global warming position. The 54 physicists wrote to APS governing board: ‘Measured or reconstructed temperature records indicate that 20th - 21st century changes are neither exceptional nor persistent, and the historical and geological records show many periods warmer than today.’

The petition signed by the prominent physicists, led by Princeton University's Dr. Will Happer, who has conducted 200 peer-reviewed scientific studies. The peer-reviewed journal Nature published a July 22, 2009 letter by the physicists persuading the APS to review its statement. In 2008, an American Physical Society editor conceded that a ‘considerable presence’ of scientific skeptics exists.

In addition, in April 2009, the Polish National Academy of Science reportedly ‘published a document that expresses skepticism over the concept of man-made global warming.’ An abundance of new peer-reviewed scientific studies continue to be published challenging the UN IPCC climate views. (See: Climate Fears RIP...for 30 years!? - Global Warming could stop 'for up to 30 years! Warming 'On Hold?...'Could go into hiding for decades,' peer-reviewed study finds – sp@m – March 2, 2009 & Peer-Reviewed Study Rocks Climate Debate! 'Nature not man responsible for recent global warming...little or none of late 20th century warming and cooling can be attributed to humans' – July 23, 2009 )

A March 2009 a 255-page U. S. Senate Report detailed ‘More Than 700 International Scientists Dissenting Over Man-Made Global Warming Claims.’ 2009's continued lack of warming, further frustrated the promoters of man-made climate fears. See: Earth's 'Fever' Breaks! Global temperatures 'have plunged .74°F since Gore released An Inconvenient Truth' – July 5, 2009

And so on, and on.

Denialists are not really relevant. They are a bit like creationists. They'll accept any piece of information that confirms their faithful belief, and deny anything that doesn't.

Experts in their fields? Yeah I guess so. Like expert Ufologists and expert astrologers, anybody can claim expertise these days.

They have one thing in common. They are all expert Lieologists and Conologists and they get paid well for their pseudoscience.

The main thing is that most of them are old (very old). Give them a few years and they will all do the most decent thing they have done in the last 10 years for humanity.

They will die. With any luck, with a guilty conscience.

The main thing  is that governments all over the world, including China and even India, are starting to take appropriate action.
