Enlighten me grendel, give me your top three reasons for believing the IPCC is performing a global con job.

That is your contention after all.

I'll butt in and give some good reasons why this is a con job, or at the very least speculation only.

Firstly the IPCC is just another arm of the UN and their website is pitiful. Secondly this.....

Quote:
While the leaders agreed that global warming should be held to two degrees celsius in an attempt to combat climate change, no specific targets were set for emissions reductions in the medium term.

http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/1048497/Climate-pact-will-need-hard-slog:-Rud...

So - no emissions reductions in the medium term. Strange - so how will we meet these goals? Maybe we'll start in 2020?

Thirdly...and from the mouth of the IPCC itself..

Quote:
To predict the future global climate change, several greenhouse gas emission scenarios were developed and fed into computer models.

They project for the next century that, without specific policy changes:

•global mean temperature should increase by between 1.4 and 5.8°C (2.5 to 10°F).
•the Northern Hemisphere cover should decrease further, but the Antarctic ice sheet should increase.
•the sea level should rise by between 9 and 88 cm (3.5" to 35").
•other changes should occur, including an increase in some extreme weather events.
After 2100, human induced global climate change is projected to persist for many centuries. The sea level should continue rising for thousands of years after the climate has been stabilized.

All these should's because they've developed scenarios and fed them into a computer which has spat out what they want us to hear.

So all these terrible scenarios could occur - yet world leaders have decided on no immediate target to reduce emissions. Of course they're talking about a 60-80% reduction by 2050 - they will all be retired or dead by then.

Aside from the new carbon taxes which we have to pay for in the meantime - when is this government really going to go green? All these global discussions are doing is ensuring the oil and fossil fuel industries maintain their profits. Renewables in this country won't get a look in.

Sooooo... it's unfalsifiable, then.... Thought so.

Ok. I forgive you. Now you'll have to do a search if you want to find it. I don't have time to help you at the moment.

Mantra, I agree with that part. The Oil and Coal lobby is still very strong in this country.

Of course, we also have unions behind the push to protect workers in those industries, so it's not all about Right Wing versus Left Wing.

I don't trust the ALP in this, and they have yet to show their true colours. I don't trust their management abilities.

The global discussions (eg Copenhagen) are intended to address the threat.

The reaction to the threat has nothing to do with saving the environment, or polar bears, trees etc. The entire motivation is about preventing a human tragedy, although it's all linked.

If you think it's a con job, then I tend to take it personally.  I feel a bit like Buzz Aldrin when confronted by someone who told him the moon landings were a hoax. Like Buzz, I'm affronted by people who say things that I know to be lies, and the problem is that others believe them.

The range of scenarios was selected to cover various levels of action by world leaders in terms of emission reductions. The worst scenario is a 'do nothing - business as usual scenario"

I don't understand your point. Try referring to some of the sites I suggested.  The IPCC site is by its nature very technical.

Muso - why would you take it personally? Aren't you an advocate for nuclear energy?  This is all about pushing for NP ultimately - nothing to do with emissions - that's just great spin.

Of course saving the environment isn't on the agenda - I mean let's control the weather, but who cares whether the earth can supply enough food, water & shelter to sustain the population.

As far as trusting the ALP - they are the same as the Liberals, although it's becoming obvious that Rudd is a bigger liar than Howard. Both parties have identical agendas and it's all about big business - not the idiots who vote for them.

Quote:
MINING giant Rio Tinto has urged Kevin Rudd to immediately begin work on a regulatory regime allowing use of nuclear energy in Australia, arguing the viability of energy alternatives has been dramatically overstated.

In regard to the moon landing - there will always be a question mark beside this "amazing" achievement. They've never managed to get back there and strangely - NASA has lost the original photos. The greatest feat on earth and the original photos are missing. Never mind - Hollywood is coming to the rescue.

NASA loses Apollo moon footage, but Hollywood restores it.

Please don't tell me you doubt the moon landings. I remember watching the burn that took Apollo 11 out of Earth orbit. They have recently shown pictures of Tranquility base from orbit.  I have spoken to crew members on board MIR and the International Space Station via radio.

Nuclear power would have the desired effect of reducing emissions, but ultimately Australia is a very small player on the world arena.

The best thing Australia could do is to sell the Uranium elsewhere and concentrate on Solar and Geothermal energy, using some of the Uranium profits to fund it.

Selling the idea of Nuclear Power to the Australian population may be impossible.

I've had some exposure to carbon trading. I think I explained how it works on here at one stage.  It should be quite effective if implemented properly (ie not like Europe)

I really like Mantra, and am pretty sure that even though I feel she is the one who has been conned into falling for all these conspirinut theories, that just like Grendel, and Soren, and most others who choose to speak against Global Warming, as if it is a giant hoax, they all would support lowering our emissions, because they want to see all forms of pollution reduced.
It is just unfortunate that this issue has so effectively been sidetracked by the initial PR campaign designed by the same company who convinced an extra two generations that smoking wasn't bad for you.

We must apportion some blame onto the alarmists as well, whose "Cry Wolf" mentality increased public cynicism to the point that nothing is ever acceptable on it's face value, irrespective of the motives or credentials on display

I think we probably need to take a step back from even trying to get denialists to face the facts, because they refuse to even examine them honestly.

I think we need to accept that the common ground is our shared humanity, and a shared belief that we should try and do the best we can for future generations, and the planet, by changing our behaviour, to reduce the amount of pollutants we put into our environment, and just agree that no matter what raison d'etre you choose, reducing our gross over consumption of non-renewables, is a good step toward more responsibly living our lives.

Now that is delusional.

The initial pr campaign was that bag of lies "An inconvenient truth."

If you want to decrease industrial CO2 emissions fine...  but don't try to tell me it will control the climate and don't tax me for it.

Personally I'm looking forward to the class action in 10-20 years when CO2 is still high and temps are low.

The popculture referrence of the cartoon is very apt and not merely topical. A lot of this climate change stuff is a little bit of science and a whole load of youf culture sloganeering and save the planet baloney.
You must have the menatlity of a Jacko or a Bono or their pop culture ilk to think that you can control the planet's climate - especially that now we can agree to limit warming to 2 degrees or whatever nonsense tey are spouting lately. Laughable.

Well this is indicative of why you don't get it.
Time and time again, people have explained that climate change is not just a simple turning a knob up or down scenario, but you are stuck with that concept in your head, so you simplistically reject things you misunderstand.

Your garbage about recent cooling is akin to a doctor with a fever patient who had a temp of 105F , that dropped to 104F saying that he is now OK, when he is still critically ill.

If your problem is with alarmists, then I would have thought that arming yourself with facts, and countering them with accurate scientific forecasts would be more worthwhile than hanging on to discredited bunkum, and confusing people with conspirinut theories.

ROTFLMAO

no you dont get it...

30 years is considered long enough to call "weather" patterns climate.

BTW don't try to tell me whats in my head when you don't understand the first thing abut the issue and why your position is so tenuous.

If you weren't so in denial about every fact that counters your position you'd have a leg to stand on unfortunately you don't

Don't worry I'll be pointing you and your dopey mates out for the class action too.

Oh and here's another thing you can deny...

Quote:
climate

Condition of the atmosphere at a particular location over a long period of time (from one month to many millions of years, but generally 30 years). Climate is the sum of atmospheric elements (and their variations): solar radiation, temperature, humidity, clouds and precipitation (type, frequency, and amount), atmospheric pressure, and wind (speed and direction). To the nonspecialist, climate means expected or habitual weather at a particular place and time of year. To the specialist, climate also denotes the degree of variability of weather, and it includes not only the atmosphere but also the hydrosphere, lithosphere, biosphere, and such extraterrestrial factors as the sun. Seealso urban climate.

Mozzaok,

The real 'denialists' are perfectly aware of the facts. They are hired hands. The likes of Richard Lindzen has already enjoyed bullshitting for the tobacco industry and he has a taste for professional lying and arrogance.  He has enough intelligence to know that he's lying. The same goes for John Christy and his offsider.

In Australia, I'd argue that Bob Carter is in the same boat. David Evans probably isn't. He basically just wants to make a name for himself, because he was too mediocre in what he did to make an honest living.

The remainder of Australian denialists are mostly jokes. They have been assimilated by the Borg of Climate Confusion. They literally don't know their arse from their elbow. Jennifer Marohasy falls squarely in that category.
