THE PART THAT OUR PLEASURE PLAYS...

Religion it seems is not too different to an erect penis, [is] capable of making the wisest man, act like a fool.

mozzaok,

Yes indeed.

It would seem all human beings have a propensity for vanity, and foolish actions.

And it seems pleasure, and particularly the pleasure which the sex act can arouse, is a 'catch-all' for all mankind.
[er,  .....esp men??? ......the expression 'dumb stick' comes to mind.]

King David in the Bible was [supposedly] a devout man, a man of God, and yet King David 'took' Bathsheba [another mans wife].

I imagine that David's lust for Bathsheba, was the motive?

Not only did King David 'take' Bathsheba, he effectively had Uriah [Bathsheba's husband] murdered, after he had already wronged Uriah, in his lust for Uriah's wife.

2 Samuel 11:14
And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
15  And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, THAT HE MAY BE SMITTEN, AND DIE.

Q.
How could King David come to commit such a low act?

Q.
If such a notable person as King David could commit such an act, are any of us 'safe', from our own lusts, er, foolishness?

We all know in our hearts, what is right and what is wrong, what is good and what is evil.
[i.e. we all know in our hearts what 'The Golden Rule' is, and what its significance is, for us all,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethic_of_reciprocity ]

But yet, when given a choice, we will often choose the act[ion] which will give ourselves the most PLEASURE - irrespective of whether that action is right or wrong.

Nothing strange in this.

It is in our nature, and in our genes, as the stain on Monica Lewinsky's dress can attest.

I think it would be fair to say that every one of us has acted selfishly, at some time, if we are honest.

I certainly have done things myself, which i am not proud of.
.....[It is no use asking, coz i won't tell!]

Smiley

GOOD AND EVIL - and God's 'joke' on us?

PROPOSITION #1

If there no God, then good and evil are meaningless concepts, except as they are defined by society, and ourselves.

Logically, [if we can ignore, evade, societies rules] we ourselves [within our own 'sphere of influence'] can become the absolute arbiters of what is good and evil.

So that which gives us pleasure, and materially enriches us [so as to enable us to gain yet more pleasure], IS GOOD.

And whatever stands in the way of us obtaining pleasure, logically, HAS TO BE BAD, AND 'EVIL'.

So if it feels good, do it!

After all, life is short, and it is a jungle out there.

And feelings of 'guilt', are illogical, as they do not *serve* us, in the delivery of those things which give us pleasure.
.....perhaps the 'guilt' i feel is just an evolutionary short circuit in our human neuro-circuitry??
.....[Pssss't, anyone got an anti-depressant??]

So logically, why shouldn't i do whatever will give me the most pleasure in this life??

PROPOSITION #2

If there is a God, doesn't it seem very cruel of God to give each of us, an understanding of what is good and evil, and to then to also introduce physical pleasure into that equation?

Huh

If there is a God,
.....why would he do such a [kill joy kinda] thing?

May i suggest, God made us this way [with an understanding of what is good and evil], not because he is cruel.

But, because he wants us [his spirit children] to come to understand, that our choices have consequences!!

God certainly knows that we will make mistakes, and some bad choices in life.

But surely, an important question that presents itself is,
.....Are we smart enough, in our lives here, to stop repeating the same mistakes and bad choices?

Have you ever heard the expression,
...."Be good, for goodness sake!!"

Have you ever thought about the concept of choice [free will]?

Choice is a mental power, a thought power,  ....a spiritual power.

Here, in this 'reality', here on this little planet, our choices have no form, until we express them physically!

I believe that the purpose of us being here, is to learn the consequences [and the seriousness], of expressing our choices.

In the larger scheme of things, very choice we make, has a consequence.
....i.e. a 'butterfly effect'.

+++++++++

We are spirit [i believe], but we are the prisoners of the earth.

In Hebrew Adamah means earth.

Adam.

This world is a test, a fire, with our 'substance' contained within a 'crucible'.

Certainly we will make mistakes, and bad choices.

The 'way out' is reached, when we acknowledge the mistakes we have made, and accept God's righteousness, and his mercy.

Seek those things which are from above.
....LOVE and TRUTH.

Alternatively you could keep doing what you are doing.
....seek those things which give the most physical pleasure.

You choose.

Jeremiah 9:24
But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.

.....For in these things I delight, saith the LORD.
.....LOVINGKINDNESS, JUDGMENT, and RIGHTEOUSNESS.

Psalms 69:32
The humble shall see this, and be glad: and your heart shall live that seek God.
33  For the LORD heareth the poor, and despiseth not his prisoners.

Well I vote for proposition number 1.

I am happy to abide by societies rules, and suffer the consequences society dictates, if I transgress, which I have(repeatedly), and will again(hopefully).

I guess this is at least partly why I do not like repressive organisations which seek to impose arbitrary rules dreamed up by a different culture, in a different time.

Most things that they would ban, I like, while too many of the things that they condone, I abhor.

Me and them do not fit, never have, never will, and that is how I like it.

"Well I vote for proposition number 1."

Hi mozzaok,

Effectively, what you are saying is we can not blame God for our circumstances, because God does not exist.

Ergo, the circumstances we find ourselves in are due to our own choices.

Er, if no God.
....man at fault.

If a God.
....man at fault [coz we still screwed up].

Cheesy

"But pleasures are like poppies spread,
You seize the flower its bloom is shed;
Or like the snow falls in the river,
A moment white - then melts forever;
Or like the Borealis race,
That flit ere you can point their place;
Or like the rainbow's lovely form
Evaneshing amid the storm.-"

Know what it is to be a child...
To see a world in a grain of sand
And heaven in a wild flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.

Do you think alcoholics, morbidly obese people, drug addicts, high speed crash victims and alcoholics have more pleasures in life?

If you live for the moment, do you mortgage the future?

Great poem but do crocodiles overindulge?

Also: "Nae man can tether time or tide" is the next line indicating that it has nothing to do with how frontal lobes are developed.

Thanks for the reminding of the poem anyway. Now I've reread it again after many years.

THE crucial judgement, how to live a 'balanced' life?

Some chase pleasure, but never find satisfaction.

All hope for love, but most, will settle for companionship.

Our greatest desire is to be content with our choices, and many try self delusion to satiate that desire.

Too many seek validation from their children, and love them with an irrational passion, while they are still 'their' creation, but come the awakening of independence, and the perfection of that love is shattered, it speaks volumes of the vanity within us all.

Most misunderstand the true hedonist, they seek to fill their life with joy, but that can emanate from a morning walk, just as easily as a gourmet meal, or a sexual encounter, the whole balance in life is to be able to identify what actually makes you happy.

Unfortunately we see a society that is conned into thinking consumption is the ultimate pleasure, and it certainly can be gratifying, but it works on the premise that he who dies with the most stuff, is the happiest, and we all know that is not true.

So be kind to yourself, is the first, and most important rule of life, if you can't do that, then what you can offer others is far less than your best.

Is it possible to keep the thread going by just asking rhetorical questions, or will somebody eventually chicken out and supply an answer?   Grin
