Likewise all denominations probably consider themselves to be the true Catholics (with the exception of the Lutherans), as it's a clearly stated part of the Nicene creed, which pretty much all denominations adopt.
Catholic simply means universal, hence its inclusion in the creed of the council of Nicea and accepted by many denominations.
What you are referring to as catholics are the Roman Catholics. Tallowood's clarification is quite right, don't sneer at it.
The first significant schism in the universal catholic church was between the eastern and the western churches, now known as Eastern or Greek Orthodox (originally of Constantinopolis , the capital of the Eastern empire, now Istambul) and Roman Catholics, respectively.
