Vote above and below the line
Nov 23rd, 2007 at 10:23am

EDIT - according to the AEC you can NOT vote both above and below the line.

http://www.ozpolitic.com/electoral-reform/senate-group-voting-tickets-above-line...

You may vote both above and below the line in the senate. Your below the line vote takes precedence, unless it is informal. This could be a good ‘backup strategy’ if you are concerned about the validity of your below the line vote.

hi freediver ,

Someone told me we can vote either above the line, for one party/member or below the line - in which case we have to put in all 65 members in order to be valid !!

can you explain it in your own simple words please ?

Yes that is correct.

Or you can do both, in which case they will ignore what you put above the line, unless you make an error with your below the line vote. Obviously if you do both you don't mix them up - you still put a single '1' above the line and rank all 65 below the line.

tx, I had a look at a aust govt site too.

think I'll just go for the single number., might do both, but up to 65 is a bit excessive.
Apparenlty don't need all 65, but a vast majority. To make intentions abundantly clear.

I'm not real sure how it works. If you make a mistake they probably would never notice anyway. Technically your vote is invalid if you vote below the line but don't rank them all, but I think the vote counting policy is to accept whatever is clear. I wouldn't recommend testing them on that.

To vote below the line all boxes MUST be numbered. You have to be careful not to skip or double up any numbers. Otherwise it is an informal vote. If you make a mistake you can always get a new form and start again.

The AEC just got back to me - apparently you cannot vote both above and below the line. Hopefully this is a case of vote counting policy being more liberal than official policy.

I got this from the Antony Green on the abc website originally:

http://www.abc.net.au/elections/federal/2004/guide/senatevotingsystem.htm

All below the line votes are entered into a computer system for the count. This computer program also checks to make sure the ballot paper meets the complex formality criteria for the Senate. Note that if you vote both above and below the line, your below the line vote will take precedence, but if your vote below the line is informal, then your above the line vote will count instead.
