Immigrants are better educated: report
Jul 25th, 2007 at 10:58am

http://www.smh.com.au/news/National/Immigrants-are-better-educated-report/2007/07/24/1185043118051.html

Migrants are better educated, more law-abiding, are generally healthier and less dependent on welfare than the average Australian-born citizen, a new report reveals.

The costs of migration were found to be low and mainly associated with migrants adjusting to Australia after their arrival.

Researchers found only a "marginal" incidence of racial prejudice to migration, which was overshadowed by a widespread appreciation of the cultural and social benefits to Australia from its migration program.

"There are few social costs associated with migration and most of these are short-term integration issues that relate mostly to the humanitarian intake," Prof Carrington said in a statement.

"However, most migrants, including those arriving through the humanitarian intake, have over time, learnt English, acquired qualifications and done well."

Nearly 90 per cent of the 106,495 immigrants entering Australia in the 2006 financial year were skilled migrants.

More than six million migrants have entered Australia since 1945, bringing the country's overseas-born population to 25 per cent of the entire population of 21 million people.

Migrants are required to pass a series of health checks before acquiring temporary or permanent status in Australia.

The report found migrants have a lower hospitalisation rate than Australian-born citizens.

Most new immigrants are not eligible for disability or aged pensions until 10 years after their arrival in Australia while non-humanitarian migrants must wait two years before accessing social security payments.

UNE professor Jim Walmsley, co-editor of the report, said there was no evidence of a "migrant underclass" or "ethnic enclave ghettos" in Australia and the report "dispelled a number of myths about the impact of migrants on the host community".

"On the contrary, the available evidence overwhelmingly supports the view that migrants to Australia have made substantial contributions to Australia's stock of human, social and produced capital," Prof Walmsley said.

Yeah right, take a walk around Balga in Perth, I bet the unemployment rate is not lower per head.
Although there are some great migrants, there are alot of violent scum too. We should stick to handpicking proffesionals and leave the refugees out, too many of them run from violence only to be a little less violent with our kids. bugger em I say. Just like mostpolitical papers or studies, the results would be manipulated. I've seen the area I grew up in and spoke to the people who live in it. The government throw all the immigrants in housing commission areas where the generaly stick together. Look at Lakemba,in Sydney, Balga in Perth etc. bugger humanitarian reasons keep our country safe.

P.S no I'm not racist, I hate everyone who can't live by our laws, Ozzies included.

Gee... 'accurate' new-stories like this make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside...

NOT.

What total and utter garbage!

Have you guys even read this 'so-called research?'  Roll Eyes All of it is speculation and none of it is conclusive. Hilarity. That bonehead Kerry Carrington conducted research for A YEAR AND A HALF to come up with that garbage? -To top it all off, they're just ARTS students/lecturers... the bottom of the barrel in terms of 'professers.' Unfortunately, I've discovered that AFTER I'm already three years into my arts degree.  Roll Eyes

-Word of advice lady... use *STATISTICS* to back up your arguments... this quoting people and using it as evidence is NOT a conclusive report.

Seriously... if anyone has a time to read this rot... here's a link to the full report:

http://www.immi.gov.au/media/publications/research/social-costs-benefits/index.h...

It's actually a tactic of some arts students/professors to make their work longer and complicated than it really is... they do this in order to make their work seem more 'academic' and 'respectable.'

Unfortunately for this professor... I can see through her 'political research' fairly easily.

It's bogus. If this was anywhere near an accurate report she would have at the very least put in some 'crime statistics.' I'd also like to see some stats on African and Middle Eastern immigrants... as opposed to the more obedient South Koreans and Japanese.

Do you have any specific criticisms of the research? Obviously the news report is not going to be as detailed as the research.

Skilled migrants creating probs: study

http://news.smh.com.au/skilled-migrants-creating-probs-study/20080429-295y.html

Skilled migrant workers from non-English speaking countries granted visas to help Australia's skills crisis are adding to the problem they were meant to assist, new findings show.

Less than a third of the migrants coming to Australia on skilled workers' visas are working in their field, a report by Monash University researchers has found.

Almost 213,000 people moved to Australia as skilled migrants between 2001 and 2006, and while the majority of those from English speaking countries went on to fill professional or managerial positions, just 29.3 per cent from non-English speaking countries did the same.

"They're not contributing to the skilled workforce but they're contributing to urban population growth and housing pressure," research author Bob Birrell told Fairfax.

Prof Birrell and co-author Ernest Healy have called for a freeze on skilled migration, while the government concentrates on using bridging courses to bring the migrants up to the standard required by their professions.

The report said anecdotal evidence suggested employers regarded accountants from non-English backgrounds as technically capable but held concerns about their communication skills, Fairfax reports.

"The biggest problem is poor English and the lack of occupational experience," Prof Birrell told The Australian newspaper.

"It also raises questions about courses that are being reduced in demand or complexity to cater for overseas students."

Data used in the reports predated changes to government policy including work experience for former international students and an increased number of employer-sponsored visas, Immigration Minister Chris Evans said in response to the findings.

I disagree, we should not stop SKILLED immigration but instead stop ''Refugee'' immigration.

If you are implying that race or culture is the driving factor, then the locals, who are mostly of European decent, would be better. But that is not the case. Sorry to disappoint you AN.

EDIT - this was in response to AN's "if they are from Europe" reply to the original article, which he seems to ahve deleted.

I noted the age of the article after i wrote reply, therefore it was irrelevant.

Before I migrated to Oz, in 1974, I had to prove that I had no criminal record, no disease, and that my ancestors were Caucasian. For some reason the White Australia policy was still in force in some overseas embassies then, even though "officially" abandoned. I passed all the tests. Fortunately, they didn't test my IQ.  Tongue

34 years later I still have no criminal record, still have no disease, I'm still Caucasian.....and my IQ is still the same.  Sad

PS: It has possibly dropped 20 points because of the consumption of Toohey's Pils.
