Intelligent criticism of The Bible
Apr 13th, 2007 at 10:38am

Ther e were a few intelligent criticisms of The Bible. Only one comes to my mind at this stage.
Now there is a spiritual forum, this is surely the area to discuss them fully.

After all, if the Biba can't stand being criticised, it ain't that robust, is it ?

The query arose that the Bible contradicts itself in the phrases "an eye for an eye" and then "turn the other cheek."

The query arose when discussing "abrogation". Each book should stand on its own merits though.
It may be possible that both are "right", or both are "wrong".

"An eye for an eye" is a law given to the Jews. It was given for very specific circumstances only. Namely for an injury to an unborn child and (a bit vague on this one) something to do with if an oxen was borrowed to work a farm and was injured.  Actually, very vague on that one !!
The jewish law is based on atonement for sins. ie, if someone errs, they pay up to compensate for their mistake. Same as the law nowadays here.

"Turn the other cheek" was given by Jesus.  What the jewish spiritual leaders lacked with their adherence to the law was compassion and kindness.  This lack of compassion and kindness from the pharisees really kept the people from God.
That was NOT what God intended at all.
By saying "turn the other cheek", Jesus is saying to forgive others their sins. To be compassionate.
This does not negate the first law but goes beyond it. Spiritually Jesus has paid the full atonement of our sins, now he is asking for us to "turn the other cheek" when others sin against us.

Rather than bring up other criticisms of the bible in theis thread, better to start another.
Keeps it all clear and able to follow a discussion.
It will all get muddled up and pointless otherwise.

In case you are thinking, I am VERY doubtful I will EVER ban anyone from this room. I have had good discussions and friendships with hindus, muslims, new agers, pagans, athiests and agnostics.
(At least agnostics are decisive !!)

"Turn the other cheek" is what I am told.
"I disagree entirely with what you say, but will fight to the death for your right to say it" is a phrase I entirely agree with.

Those are the wisest words any man has ever uttered.

Hi zoso,

Yes, what I see in that is if anyone loses their right to freedom of speech, it is quite likely that I will lose mine shortly after.
So I am fighting for my own right.

Even if the other person is obviously wrong and everyone sees they are a complete idiot !!! Smiley

another wise saying is--"we should live by our own convictions."

this means that because we espouse a saying as wise and wonderful it is still  only words ,right?

"Words" are nice-but they still only "words"-
