Title: Pro-nuclear countries -progress on climate change Post by lee on Aug 31st, 2016 at 3:04pm Quote:
http://www.sussex.ac.uk/newsandevents/pressrelease/id/36547 Perhaps the lack of CO2 emissions from nuclear power stations is the reason they don't go for renewables. The reason for renewables is postulated to be for its lowering of CO2, Yes? If you have nuclear power, how is an offset of CO2 achievable? An increase of 3% in emissions from nuclear powered countries would seem to be from manufacturing rather than power generation, which would mean going for renewables would not change a thing. |

I don't see a big problem with Nuclear Energy worldwide, especially as its carbon footprint is low.
People often quote the deleterious effects of nuclear power, but in terms of deaths per million person hours, they are much less than that of coal power generation. For that matter, you could argue that solar energy has a higher risk of fatality than nuclear , much to the deep greens' chagrin. (Solar panel installations have been associated with increased fire risk) I can see a future for hybrid technology in nuclear power generation, and of course nuclear fusion (it will happen one day). Nuclear is unlikely to gain public acceptance here in Australia, but in places like France, it is accepted, has a good public safety record and should continue in those places. Like the perception of climate change, nuclear power suffers from what I call the Facebook effect. People these days would prefer to ask their Facebook friends (etc) than listen to professionals. (any professionals) I was watching that 24 hour emergency shiow last night. There was a young lady who was having a pin extracted from her leg. The doctor was about to give her a local anaesthetic. She said that her mother said that the anaesthetic would give her cancer. At that stage, I was hoping for a Doc Martin type figure to step in and try to bring her to her senses, but the doctor's bedside manners were disappointingly perfect. He should have said. "Ok, you stupid woman, I'm going to extract this without any anaesthetic, and if I'm lucky, you'll faint because of the pain, and then I won't have to put up with your crap" She wasn't delirious, she was just an idiot. Too many people are like that today. There is a disturbing growth in "idiocracy". That's what annoys me so much. |

That may be true but it suffers greatly from the NIMBY problem After all there were thousands of people displaced by the Fukushima meltdown, and 5 years later, despite a massive clean up, radiation levels are still too high for them to return to their houses. |

What massive clean up are you referring to? The location and state of the melt through coriums is still not known. Five plus years later and there is still radioactive groundwater spewing into the Pacific ocean from the Fukushima Daichi Plant. Just few weeks ago in China 14 Seafood smugglers were arrested for trying to dump seafood that was caught in Fukushima waters and had high levels of radiation. http://www.efe.com/efe/english/portada/china-arrests-14-for-selling-irradiated-seafood-from-fukushima/50000260-3020257 The long lived radionuclides will linger in the environment and concentrate in the ecology and food chain for thousands of years - some millions of years. So what are the long term health effects of the nuclear power industry and its waste management scam? (even today, simply living in the northern hemisphere doubles your chance of contracting cancer due to exposure to radiation as compared to the southern hemisphere. The bulk of the nuclear weapons testing sites and location of nuclear power plants are in the northern Hemisphere. Do you know when this health risk differential will equilibrate?) |

Ha! Hook line and sinker. I got the intended reaction. Seriously though, what are your thoughts on nuclear fusion, WHEN it finally works (which it will) ? |

ah.... that is a completely different animal - with problems of containment of the plasma state. Forcing two hydrogen atoms to fuse, for example in order to form a helium atom concerns you on the public health from John The Taverner? |

Interesting how the Great John underscore Taverner appears out of the ether 24 hours after I summoned thee.
Who is John the Taverner? In fact, are there any real posters in this forum? Perhaps the Chimp is the only "real" poster in here along with the sublime Jethro Flute freak.? Who is Mr Photon? Is Bruce lee still alive? Who are these mythical figures of discontent? Let me see if I can summon the Supreme Batman sooky sooky la la Where does thou hidest freak bat of Hades? Reveal yourself sooky sooky la la |

I'm referring to the clean up of the habitable areas. 150,000 people were evacuated from within 20 km of the reactor (effectively being radiation refugees) and 5 years later it is still too radioactive for them to return. Quote:

of course it is still radioactive - its not possible to remove all the top soil and decontaminate all buildings from several prefectures in Japan. In fact Tokyo itself is contaminated with radioactive dust. Much of it contains microscopic glass spheres - directly produced by the exploding fallout material in the days post 11/03/11 The discharge of 400,000 litres per day of contaminated groundwater in the pacific since the accident is an environmental disaster of epic proportions. It is no wonder that radioactive seafood is being detected by many different countries - including China and also the USA (even though the US is very reluctant to monitor food safety for radioactive contaminants - especially imports from Japan) Media has been appallingly complicit in what has now become a global scale health issue |
