That story was started by a columnist ( ... it isn't just Australia that has "Andrew Bolts)  with the UK's "Daily Mail" newspaper - supposedly based on a press release from the UK Met Office

I work in the energy sector and know full well that some of the most senior research and climate change supporters have invested heavily in the renewables sector programmes against which we compete.

Investing in a programme then going on the media and whipping up hysteria to create a climate which will benefit their programme.

If we in the petroleum industry do that we get slammed as unethical.

The difference is that scientists work is peer reviewed. If they start publishing something promoting self interest then they quickly get discredited by the much larger number of scientists who aren't on the payroll.

This is also what happened to those scientists on the payroll of mining and coal companies.

no the story was started by quite a number of people who looked at the data and not the press release. the actual DATA shows 1998 and 2012 having the SAME average temperature. the peaks and troughs in between have been described as 'statistically insignificant'. It might be the warmest decade in 100 years. that is not the point. the point is that the warming as stopped which is exactly wha the METs DATA says.

I talk as part of the solution.

Just a point for you, we spent USD 770m on R&D into renewables last year to Dec.

Don't label petroleum companies the problem, we will be the ones to move forward.
Government action is never the answer.

Neither are scientists pushing an agenda.

How can you use just two individual points of data and claim this as proof that global warming has stopped. Global warming is a trend over decades.

If you choose 1999 and 2012 we have been strongly warming
If you choose 1998 and 2009 it has been cooling.

That is such junk science longy, but is typical of the global warming deniers. You can't just cherry pick out the years that suit you.

it is cherry picking. Are you aware that climatologists have literally admitted to a US Senate enquiry that they often cherry pick data to get the result they want and that they consider it ethical?

and the graph I referred to wasnt just two dots in tie. It was an entire 16 year series which conveniently had the beginning and end points identical but in between had no statistically signifcant variation.

Global warming (which no one denies) IS a trend of decades which is why the FACT tha the last 16 years hasnt changed is significant. And given that even screaming hysterics like the UK MET are predicting the next 5 years to have no warming, this means that we have 20+ years of no warming. when exactly are you planning to accept that TWO DECADEs constitutes a trend variation?

The IPCC itself accepts (some time ago) that 17 years of no change constitutes a game-changer. the 17th year is this year. Watch them move the goal-posts again.

in 1950's they wanted there was the "Peak Oil" theory - back then they presented very loose evidence with a view to reduce our consumption of oil

now they have the Climate Change theory - also with some very loose evidence with a view to reduce our oil consumption

mind you - I am all for cleaner consumption for the sake of cleanliness but not based on a lie

whatever happened to the adage that you are innocent until proven guilty

the responsibility is on the people making the claims to prove their point

how much are humans contributing to the carbon cycle in percentage terms?

because in the long history of mankind, pods of whales have never beached themselves or committed what looks like mass suicide before...
