Call to replace Australia Day

THE country needs consider a more inclusive national holiday to replace Australia Day, Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation (ANTaR) say.

ANTaR national director Jacqueline Phillips said the day is regarded by many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as Invasion or Survival Day.

"On January 26, a British naval officer, Arthur Phillip raised the Union Jack over Sydney without the consent of the first peoples," Ms Phillips said.

"Until we choose a more appropriate national holiday, our aspirations for a modern, reconciled nation will be difficult to realise."

ANTaR says it has sent a message of support to those at the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra, which turns 40.

Four Aboriginal men - Michael Anderson, Billy Craigie, Bertie Williams and Tony Coorey - set up the Aboriginal Tent Embassy, opposite Old Parliament House in Canberra, at 1am on January 27, 1972.



The foursome camped underneath a beach umbrella in protest of the McMahon Liberal Government's refusal to recognise Aboriginal land rights.

Over the years the issues of sovereignty became central to the embassy's ongoing protest.

"Forty years on, the Tent Embassy remains a powerful symbol of the Aboriginal struggle for equality, rights, recognition and sovereignty," Ms Phillips.

"It is a reminder of how far we have come but also how far we have to go to secure a truly equal place for Aboriginal and Torres Strait people in this country."

How can it be a INVASION DAY ?

40,000 years of isolationism and surviving, not living because of it.

The cultural and racial weakening of this isolationism is incredible!

If it wasn't for the INTERGRATION (Day!) of THE REST OF THE WORLD, here - the Aboriginals would be still asleep like an old person drooling in palliative care.

Aussies would now be speaking French, be calling their vast land "l'Australie", have the French tricolour in the top left hand corner of their flag, be supping poncy wine rather than ale (a man's drink), throw childish temper tantrums when things don't go their way, be living under the Napoleonic Code (guilty until proven innocent) rather than English Common Law (innocent until proven guilty) and think nothing of eating frogs, snails and horses, all garnished with garlic.

Australia Day is about celebrating communities and what's great in Australia. National pride is a good thing. Why do some people have to be so apologetic about this? Most countries have a national holiday of some kind.

I reckon we have a lot to celebrate. Having been all over the world, I think Australia is a pretty special place.  I always had a sense of relief when I got home. We are still the lucky country.

We have nothing to be ashamed about. Sure we had some dark times in our history, but that's past now, and we should be occupied with the great things people of all backgrounds are doing for our country, and the great potential that we have as a nation.

Having seen a few ex French colonies, I certainly wouldn't be so sure that it would have turned out better. The ex French colonies that I visited had the best politicians and best police and officials... that money could buy.

I mean don't you just hate it when your passport happens to be a forgery, despite the fact that you got it through the correct channels - but never fear, the Airport Police in Conakry (La République de la Guinée) will help you out. They will give you a piece of paper that you can use instead.  They might ask for $100 US, but you can usually negotiate a lower price. Vive la République or Petite France as they call it in neighbouring countries.  .

Indigenous Australians will today mark the 40th anniversary of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra.

Four decades ago, four men sat under a beach umbrella on the lawns of Parliament House and declared it an embassy.

It was a simple yet symbolic protest against then-prime minister Billy McMahon's refusal to acknowledge land rights.

Over the years the embassy has been the scene of controversies and clashes, with various governments attempting to remove the tents.

But the embassy and its residents always returned.

Isabel Coe has been a Tent Embassy activist from the beginning. Her husband, Billy Craigie was one of the founders.

She says after four decades the plight of Aboriginal people has not improved.

"In fact everything's gotten worse for Aboriginal people," she said.

But she argues the embassy remains as relevant today as it did 40 years ago.

Michael Anderson was also one of the original founders.

He says while there have been gains in Indigenous land rights the embassy's focus is now on sovereignty.

"It is the fight, it's the only fight left," he said.

But he accepts after four decades and little progress in the fight for self-determination, the embassy will need to change.

Fine, if Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people wish to label 26 Jan in that way they are free to do so.

It won't change the fact that 26 Jan marks the day of the beginning of modern Australia and that is what the nation is called..."AUSTRALIA" and so it's simply just logical to call it "Australia Day" and just plain dopey to suggest anything else.

The fact that they continue to label themselves "Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people" and not "Australians" is what is racist and divisive.

The calls to alter the constitution to recognise and single out a particular race of people is racist and divisive.

ANTAR is therefore a racist and divisive organisation and all its supporters such as Greens_win are therefore racists......

I think Aboriginal culture 'hung itself' a very long time ago - like 30,000 years ago. Its been dead for so long. Never lived, only survived ...just.

Britain was 'awakened' when Rome entered its lands. For a long time, peace and harmony existed ...but when some Brits changed to become like Romans - then things got sour. Just like Aboriginals who stop being 'aboriginal' and take up Politics instead ...then the bitterness and hatred grows.

Australia Day is a celebration of POLITICS in this nation.
Aboriginals who cry bitterly "Invasion" are not real aboriginals.
Real Aboriginals are sticking to what little concept they have of themselves and teaching people from around the world and those that have been born here - all about 'land' for starters.

the Union Jack refers to the fact we were once a British colony, before we became an independant nation...

Riot police rescue Gillard, Abbott from protesters

Dozens of police and security guards have rescued Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott from a group of angry protesters who had surrounded a Canberra restaurant.

The Prime Minister stumbled as she was rushed to an awaiting vehicle and was helped up by security officials who were confronted by the protesters.

It appears the mob was incensed by remarks made by Mr Abbott earlier in the day in which he said he thought it was probably time to reconsider the relevance of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy.

Around 200 protesters gathered outside the restaurant near Old Parliament House where Ms Gillard was handing out medals to emergency services representatives.

Mr Abbott was also inside the building.

At least 50 police, including the riot squad, were called to the scene shortly after 2.30pm (AEDT).

The protesters, involved in a nearby event to mark the 40th anniversary of the embassy, banged on the three glass sides of the restaurant chanting "shame" and "racist".

The two leaders, protected by police and security officers, escaped out a side door after about 20 minutes.

Protesters chased their car down the road, banging on its roof and bonnet.

There had been false reports that the Prime Minister had been tackled. Ms Gillard's office confirmed she lost her footing, and a shoe, as she was dragged by security.

ACT Police Sergeant Chris Meagher says no-one was injured in the fracas and he has praised the police response.

"Immediate response - we had about 35 to 45 police respond also with the assistance of uniform police from Parliament House as well," he said.

Some of the protesters scuffled with police after the Prime Minister left but there have been no arrests.

'Invasion day'

Hundreds of people marched in the capital on the anniversary of the tent embassy, calling for land rights and Aboriginal sovereignty on what many call "invasion day".

Embassy founder Michael Anderson addressed a rally at the site.

"To hell with the Government and the courts in this country. You haven't got a high hope to take us on," he said.

"We will force these issues. Too many of our families have suffered for some bastard to get in the road."

Earlier, Mr Abbott told reporters in Sydney that he thinks it is probably time to reconsider the relevance of the tent embassy.

He says he can understand why the embassy was established but he thinks times have changed for the better since then.

"I think the Indigenous people of Australia can be very proud of the respect in which they are held with every Australian," he said.

"Yes, I think a lot has changed and I think it's probably time to move on from that."

'Madness'

Mr Anderson said the comments were disrespectful.

"He said the Aboriginal embassy had to go; we heard it on a radio broadcast," he said.

"We thought no way, so we circled around the building."

He said the protesters wanted the leaders to clarify their position and whether Mr Abbott was serious about removing the embassy.

"You've got 1,000 people here peacefully protesting, and to make a statement about tearing down the embassy - it's just madness on the part of Tony Abbott.

"What he said amounts to inciting racial riots."

Rugby club wants tougher anti-racism measures

Central West Rugby Union says it will not tolerate racism in its competition.

The Dubbo Rhinos Rugby Club spoke out yesterday, saying its players were sick of hearing racist slurs by both other players and spectators.

Club president Dallas Pomfret says the club wants tighter rules around player and crowd control.

But the President of Central West Rugby, Kim Rickards, says it has measures in place to deal with formal complaints when they are made.

"We have a special officer, who is a sighting commissioner and who is given the job of looking at incidences of behaviour, certainly racism or racist behaviour is one of them," he said.

"The party concerned, be it a player or spectator or a club, can be brought to account and be penalised."

Minister says Dubbo tolerant despite mosque attack

The Federal Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Parkes MP, John Cobb, believes Dubbo, in central western NSW, is a racially tolerant community, despite a vandalism attack on an Islamic mosque.

Racial slurs were spray-painted on the Fitzroy Street building on Saturday night, and within hours the community had painted over it.

Mr Cobb says Dubbo has proven it is a tight-knit community that will not tolerate racism.

"It is a concern of course ... but I think the reaction by the community laid that concern to rest very quickly and let's hope this is just an isolated attack by some idiots who have very quickly been taught by the community that it's not a goer here," he said.

A surgery patient at Dubbo Base Hospital claims she was mistreated because she is an Aboriginal.

Lowana West underwent a full hysterectomy at the hospital March 31.

On Tuesday Mrs West claimed in the Daily Liberal that her stay at Dubbo Base Hospital was replete with omissions and errors, including the wrong morphine tablets, faulty equipment, unchanged bandages and two days without a shower.

Yesterday she said there were “serious issues of racism at Dubbo Base Hospital”.

Mrs West was asked to move to the maternity ward last Sunday, at 2am.

“Why the hell would I want to go up there,” she said last Monday.

“Not only me, but other women, who had had a hysterectomy - it’s not fair.

“She tried to play the sympathy card, said it was an elderly man who was very sick and they needed a bed, but at 2am? If it’s an elderly man I understand, but I couldn’t move, and I still can’t move.”

Mrs West claims she had previously been moved to a ward housing only Aboriginals.

She said a number of incidents occurred during her week-long stay in that ward, many of which she said resulted from being ignored by nurses, doctors and management.

I've experienced an anthem change. From one day to the next we had to sing a new anthem at school.

From "god save the queen" to "orstraylias sunburnt ostriches...."

My mum experienced a flag change.... when she was a kid they flew the red ensign at school and on VP day she waved the red ensign. It wasn't until the Queen's visit during the mid 50's that they were told that the it's the blue one we use now.

Neither her or I had a second thought (let alone nervous breakdowns or feelings of national betrayal) when those events occurred.

Personally: keep the flag as it is... it's a reminder... it's quaint.... give it enough time and it will become a curiousity.

The anthem makes me teary when I sing it at my children's school assemblies. It's a bit embarrassing.
