Mar 16, 1968:
My Lai massacre takes place in Vietnam

On this day in 1968, a platoon of American soldiers brutally kill between 200 and 500 unarmed civilians at My Lai, one of a cluster of small villages located near the northern coast of South Vietnam.

...

During the Vietnam War, U.S. troops frequently bombed and shelled the province of Quang Ngai, believing it to be a stronghold for forces of the National Front for the Liberation of Vietnam, or Viet Cong (VC). In March 1968, a platoon of soldiers called Charlie Company received word that Viet Cong guerrillas had taken cover in the Quang Ngai village of Son My. Led by Lieutenant William L. Calley, the platoon entered one of the village's four hamlets, My Lai 4, on a search-and-destroy mission on the morning of March 16. Instead of guerrilla fighters, they found unarmed villagers, most of them women, children and old men.

...

The soldiers had been advised before the attack by army command that all who were found in My Lai could be considered VC or active VC sympathizers, and told to destroy the village. Still, they acted with extraordinary brutality, raping and torturing villagers before killing them and dragging dozens of people, including young children and babies, into a ditch and executing them with automatic weapons. The massacre reportedly ended when an Army helicopter pilot, Warrant Officer Hugh Thompson, landed his aircraft between the soldiers and the retreating villagers and threatened to open fire if they continued their attacks.

The events at My Lai were covered up by high-ranking army officers until the following March, when one soldier, Ron Ridenhour, heard of the incident secondhand and wrote about it in a letter to President Richard Nixon, the Pentagon, the State Department, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and various congressmen. The letter was largely ignored until later that year, when investigative journalist Seymour Hersh interviewed Calley and broke the story. Soon, My Lai was front-page news and an international scandal. In March 1970, an official U.S. Army inquiry board charged 14 officers, including Calley and his company commander, Captain Ernest Medina, of crimes relating to My Lai. Of that number, only Calley was convicted. Found guilty of personally killing 22 people, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. Upon appeal, his sentence was reduced to 20 years, and eventually to 10. Seen by many as a scapegoat, Calley was paroled in 1974 after serving just one-third of his sentence.

Nuremberg trials
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Coordinates: 49°27.2603′N 11°02.9103′E The Nuremberg trials were a series of military tribunals, held by the Allied forces after World War II, most notable for the prosecution of prominent members of the political, military, and economic leadership of Nazi Germany. The trials were held in the city of Nuremberg, Germany. The first, and best known of these trials, described as "the greatest trial in history" by Norman Birkett, one of the British judges who presided over it,[1] was the trial of the major war criminals before the International Military Tribunal (IMT). Held between 20 November 1945 and 1 October 1946,[2] the Tribunal was given the task of trying 23 of the most important political and military leaders of the Third Reich, though one of the defendants, Martin Bormann, was tried in absentia, while another, Robert Ley, committed suicide within a week of the trial's commencement. Not included were Adolf Hitler, Heinrich Himmler, and Joseph Goebbels, all of whom had committed suicide several months before the indictment was signed.[3] The second set of trials of lesser war criminals was conducted under Control Council Law No. 10 at the U.S. Nuremberg Military Tribunals (NMT); among these included the Doctors' Trial and the Judges' Trial. This article primarily deals with the IMT; see Subsequent Nuremberg Trials for details on those trials.

Water torture being used by USA personnel in the Vietnam war.
Photo from the War Remnants Museum, Saigon, Vietnam

UN Protocol on Torture

In 2002 the UN produced a protocol outlawing the use of torture. Australia joined the USA as the only Western Democratic nations to vote against it. A spokesman for the Australian Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, said "This protocol would allow UN inspectors to enter Australian prisons at any time" (to check on whether torture was being used).
One wonders why UN inspectors should not do so. What is there in Australian prisons that the Australian Government would not want them to see?

Australia's shoddy treatment of East Timor

Baukau market, East Timor
A market at Baukau, East Timor, before the Indonesian invasion
Australia's complicity in, and acceptance of, Indonesia's unprovoked and unjustified invasion of East Timor in 1975 and the subsequent 25 years of tolerance of Indonesia's cruel rule of East Timor is one of the most shameful acts of Australian government in the history of the country.
Both Liberal and Labor parties have blood on their hands, and all Prime Ministers and Foreign Ministers of that period are guilty. East Timor was one of Australia's closest neighbours, it was a small and weak nation, it should have had Australia's support against Indonesian invasion.

Amnesty International estimates that 210 000 people died as a result of the Indonesian occupation. In 2002 the total population of East Timor was 779 000, so it seems that the Indonesian treatment of the East Timorese was on a par for bloodthirstiness with the Killing Fields of Cambodia and the Rwanda bloodbath of 1994. The West, including a rich near neighbour, Australia, stood by and did nothing.

The governments of Whitlam, Fraser, Hawke, Keating and Howard are all guilty of betraying the East Timorese people.

Oil and gas in the Timor Sea

Australia ratified recognition of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 1945 and apparently continued in that recognition until March 2002. At that time Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer limited Australia's recognition of the court to exclude: "any dispute concerning or relating to the delimitation of maritime zones, including the territorial sea, the exclusive economic zone and the continental shelf...".
Can this be anything other than specifically aimed at stopping East Timor from taking Australia to the ICJ and obtaining justice in the ownership of the petroleum resources of the Timor Sea?

This is not the action of a moral government; this is the sort of anything-goes, selfish behaviour that one might expect of Empire USA. Malaysia and Indonesia solved a similar boundary dispute in the ICJ in 2002: ABC Radio Australia.

The reader may like to scan this legal opinion on the subject, which although very long and technical, has an interesting General Conclusions section.

US-Israeli oil drilling begins in Golan Heights, locals protest

Published on Feb 28, 2015
Living in a border area disputed by two nations may be hard enough, but the Druze community in the Golan Heights are now facing another difficulty - that of oil exploration on their doorstep. An American company has started drilling wells there with Israel's approval, but locals fear they won't reap any benefits, as Paula Slier found out.

Syria: Militants Seize Large Cache of US Weapons In Aleppo

Published on Mar 4, 2015
Two days after the disbandment of the second U.S. backed “moderate” rebel militia in six months, the Syrian Al-Qaeda branch “Jabhat Al-Nusra” (Al-Nusra Front) seized a large cache of TOW (wire-guided anti-tank) missiles inside Regiment 46 Base in southwestern Aleppo after defeating Harakat Hazzm (Movement of Steadfastness) in a short battle.

Images of Jabhat Al-Nusra fighters with the U.S. supplied TOW missiles surfaced on Monday morning, as they paraded around the captured Regiment 46 Base, posing for pictures in front of boxes with the U.S.’ insignia.

The growing fear of hardline Islamist groups getting ahold of these potent weapons has now become a reality for the hesitant western politicians, who questioned the distribution of these arms to militias affiliated with the likes of Al-Qaeda in Syria.

For Jabhat Al-Nusra, the confiscation of these powerful weapons will pay dividends for their fighters entrenched in rural areas that are swarmed with Syrian Arab Army (SAA) armored divisions; however, at what cost?

America Has Been at War 93% of the Time, Since 1776

Published on Mar 5, 2015
It's a disgrace to be a nation that is always at war and that's exactly what America has been
Have we had bad leaders or were the people powerless, against bankers?
It's time now for people to give up the idea that they are powerless and recognize the value of the internet and social networks
It's time for the people to resume their rightful position, as the leaders of this nation!
We can now be a peaceful nation of the people, for the people and by the people!

2011 - War on Terror in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Somalia, and Yemen; Conflict in Libya (Libyan Civil War)
In most of these wars, the U.S. was on the offense.

Danios admits that some of the wars were defensive. However, Danios also leaves out covert CIA operations and other acts which could be considered war.

Let’s update what’s happened since 2011:
2012 - War on Terror in Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Syria and Yemen
2013 - War on Terror in Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Syria and Yemen
2014 - War on Terror in Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia, Syria and Yemen; Civil War in Ukraine
2015 - War on Terror in Somalia, Somalia, Syria and Yemen; Civil War in Ukraine
So we can add 4 more years of war. That means that for 222 out of 239 years - or 93% of the time - America has been at war. (We can quibble with the exact numbers, but the high percentage of time that America has been at war is clear and unmistakable.)

Indeed,
Most of the military operations launched since World War II have been launched by the U.S.
American military spending dwarfs the rest of the world put together
No wonder polls show that the world believes America is the number 1 threat to peace

US arms end up in wrong hands in Syria, 'lethal aid always bad idea' - UN envoy

Published on Mar 5, 2015
Military pressure may be needed to oust Syria's President Assad who is reluctant to talk to Washington. That message came from US Secretary of State John Kerry, with America planning to train thousands of Syrian rebels over the next three years.

RT talked to the UN special envoy for Syria - who believes lethal aid is always a bad idea.

Al-Qaeda Militants Seize U.S. Supplied Weapons in Aleppo  3

It is not clear how many TOW missiles the militants of Jabhat Al-Nusra were able to seize, but their photos depicted dozens of boxes in their possession.

Where are the TOW missiles and more importantly, where are the TOW launchers?

All I see from that video is some 120mm Mortar Rounds...   Roll Eyes

No single nation or particular religious grouping has a monopoly on war or terror, to suggest otherwise is folly. From the Hittites to Hitler and Babylon to Bush - the quest for, and maintenance of, power and influence is necessarily the domain of political interest and intrigue. Napoleon and Von Clauswitz held to the theory that military power is simply an extension of political power and warfare is merely and extension of the political argument.

Should we deride those nations who engage in warfare to pursue a political argument with those whose convictions are so deeply held that they turn from diplomacy, discourse and reason? What measure of discourse could've been had with the Confederacy, the Kaiser, Hitler or ISIL? As William Tecumseh Sherman put it "War is the remedy our enemies have chosen and I say let's give them all they want....to make war so terrible that generations will pass away before they again appeal to it!"

The peaceniks of this world do well to remember that they dissent under the protection of an umbrella of guns, rockets and missiles...and has it not always been thus?

As Churchill explained when questioned about his alliance with Stalin ..."I'd do a deal with the devil if he made war on Hitler!" A few boxes of munitions captured by the enemy is of less concern to me than the erasing of the history of human civilizations as at Nimrud. I hope the US considers turning Mosul to glass...I can live with the contradictions, hypocrisies and brutality of US foreign policy far easier than with the murderous zealots of extreme Islam!

Regards Always

again you are found in lack and willful ignorance

this creates criminal negligence

of which you embody both

well done if that is the look you are going for

you are forgiven yet exposed once again

by your own hand ...
