A family has rallied around a “very traumatised” girl after the six-year-old’s grandmother was fatally stabbed in front of her outside a Queensland shopping centre.

A 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder after 70-year-old Vyleen White died following a suspected carjacking on Saturday.

A family friend said White had only recently begun driving again after overcoming an injury and had taken her granddaughter out grocery shopping at Redbank Plains west of Brisbane.

The child is believed to have raised the alarm after White was stabbed in the chest at the shopping centre’s car park before her vehicle was allegedly stolen.

White died at the scene a short time later. The girl was unharmed.

Five teenagers — aged between 15 and 16 — have been arrested in connection with the incident, and a 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder.

Since Ms White's death, there have been reports of abuse and harassment towards Ipswich's African community.

Queensland African Communities Council president Beny Bol stood alongside Ms Micallef at a media conference in Redbank Plains on Thursday morning and said he was "moved" by her decision to join him in appealing for unity.

"We are united, and we want to make sure that no other families go through the same pain again," he said.

"This is not about race or religion, we are here because if somebody out there in our community — and I'm talking about the Australian community — and they care and they're grieving and they want to see Vyleen's legacy shine on, you need to join us. You need to be with us.

Less than 2 days after the murder these grandmas were advocating for more refugees to come here.

African gang member on bail over Vyleen White killing allegedly robs teen at knifepoint

An African gang member has faced court after allegedly robbing another teenager at knifepoint in Queensland while on bail for a car theft charge linked to the alleged murder of Vyleen White.

Ms White, 70, was allegedly stabbed to death for her 2009 Hyundai Getz by a Sudanese refugee, 16, in front of her six-year-old granddaughter at Town Square Redbank Plains Shopping Centre in Ipswich on February 3 last year.

The alleged killer, who cannot be named due to his age, was charged with murder, and two other 16-year-old males and a 15-year-old, all of African descent, were charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

One of those teenagers faced Ipswich Magistrates Court on Thursday where Acting Magistrate Rob Turra noted the 16-year-old was a “confirmed member” of the Swish Bound Gorillas gang, and had breached his curfew six times in December alone, The Courier Mail reported.

The teenager is alleged to have been in the car stolen from Ms White, but Acting Magistrate Turra noted he was not involved in the alleged stabbing.

On top of the armed robbery  and car theft charges the court heard he has another five outstanding breach of bail charges. He was originally sentenced to restorative justice for the unlawful use of a motor vehicle charge, but was due to be resentenced later this month.

But Acting Magistrate Turra remanded the teenager in custody on a new breach of bail charge and revoked bail on his other charges, noting his “utter non-compliance with bail conditions” and the need to protect the community.

The accused will face Ipswich Children’s Court on January 21.

People who are big enough to murder adults should be tried as adults and if found guilty should be punished as adults.
