Greens MP Max Chandler-Mather wants a doubling of funds for housing and homelessness.   :)

National housing and homelessness funding should be doubled so women and children fleeing violent homes are not left without a roof over their heads, the Greens say.

The Greens are heaping pressure on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's government to double funding to the national housing and homelessness agreement to $3.6 billion a year.

Under the proposal, states and territories would also be offered a share of an extra $2.5 billion a year in exchange for freezing and capping rent increases.

The Parliamentary Budget Office estimates doubling the agreement's baseline funding would cost $40 billion over a decade and another $28 billion for the rent freeze incentive.



The government provided states and territories with $1.7 billion as part of a one-year extension of the agreement but it expires on June 30.

Discussions on a new deal have been held in the lead up to the May 14 federal budget.

Data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare shows 37,392 women and children experiencing domestic and family violence sought long-term housing assistance in 2022/23.

Of those clients, 1365 (3.7 per cent) were provided long-term housing.

In 2021, a report commissioned by Everybody's Home estimated the dearth of long-term social housing was leading to 7690 women a year returning to violent partners and another 9120 becoming homeless.

Greens housing and homelessness spokesman Max Chandler-Mather said it was national disgrace tens of thousands of women and children fleeing domestic violence were being turned away.

"Doubling housing and homelessness funding would help ensure every woman escaping domestic violence receives accommodation and support, it's as simple as that," he said.

National cabinet on Wednesday signed off on a plan to give women escaping violence a $5000 payment, following a spike in the number of women killed at the hands of men.

The program will be a permanent extension of a previous trial set up under former prime minister Scott Morrison's government.

But they are despised by 90% of the electorate who don't want higher taxes, as Bobby will tell you.

Then again on the other hand we have a housing and homelessness crisis.  What happens if some of those people, that you say don't want to pay higher taxes wind up homeless?.   :(

Same as now; the Greens will continue to be despised - until a majority are homeless...   

That's why I urged Barbara Pocock (an economist) to promote MMT in the Senate, but she refused.

Each night more than 122,000 Australians are estimated to be experiencing homelessness; that's one of the highest rates among OECD countries. A recent report shows it's never been harder to find affordable rental accommodation in Australia if you're on a low income. Support groups are calling for more funding from the upcoming Federal Budget  SBS News May 5  2024.   :( 

A tenant in an investment home owned by Anthony Albanese has been handed an eviction notice with the PM considering selling the Dulwich Hill property in Sydney.

Jim Flanagan has lived in the property for the past four years, and received the eviction letter on May 8 and the property manager informed him that Mr Albanese “could be selling the house at some stage”. Mr Flanagan is on a month-to-month lease.

Mr Flanagan told The Daily Telegraph that the eviction would “kill him” and was a “crippling blow” to the small business owner.  “I have mixed emotions in calling this out,” he said. “I voted for Albo at the last election and am broadly a supporter of his policies.

I presume the problem is Flanigan won't be able to find alternative accomodation in Sydney, given Albo hadn't increased the rent over the last two years.

But Albo derserves the unwanted publicity (in this case): Labor - like the Coalition - abandoned public housing a long time ago, despite the fact he himself was raised in public housing.

Take it up with Albanese.

He's just evicted his tenant from one of the houses he owns in Sydney .....

in the middle of a " housing and homelessness crisis.

Here's a bloke that pays for nothing ... not a phukkin thing ... everything on the taxpayers dime ... 2 taxpayer provided residences - one in Canberra and one in Sydney ..... with taxpayer paid employees that go shopping for him and provide him free taxpayer funded meals .... he doesn't have to pay for a car or fuel .... no mortgage, everything provided for by the taxpayer .... and he gets around $500,000 dollars a year plus allowances.

What circumstances have changed for him that he needs to sell this house?

Is he predicting he's going to get the arse & lose all his freebies after the next election?

I'd say with all his stuff ups from the Voice to voting for the terrorist Palestinians to be admitted to the UN this dumb move may have just sealed his fate .... the 2 faced little Tojo.

You side-stepped the point, which is the faiure of neo-liberal governments (Lib and Lab)  to maintain sufficient public housing  to ensure afforable housing for all.

You are confused: he works for his wage like anyone else (and how does Gina Rinehart earn her wage?)  By definition, public servants are paid by the public sector.

The whole world - except extreme RW Jews, wants the creation of the Palestinian state, and Israel is currently facing charges of genocide ....

As for the Voice, everyone wants to close the gap but few know how to achvieve it (ironically,  the neoliberal free market ideology is the problem, just as it is with the current housing crisis, as noted above).
