Title: Voyage to Arcturus by D.Lindsay Post by I, Robot on Feb 22nd, 2024 at 8:38pm
Doing a 10 hour audio-clip of the book by David Lindsay called 'Voyage to Arcturus'.
A 104 year old Sci-Fi/Fantasy that is more 'in-house' than mainstream popular. Coveted by serious writers as a philosophical marvel and unique concept in what it means to be a novel. Known to be one of the weirdest, trippy and original novels from such a period 100+ years ago. So far, so good. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Voyage_to_Arcturus |

How it is that men here are ignorant of tools and arts and have no 'civilisation' and yet contrive to be social in their habits and wise in their thoughts?
Do you imagine then, that love and wisdom spring from tools? But I see how it arises. In your world, you have few sense organs and to make up for the deficiency you've been obliged to call in the assistance of stone and metals - that's by no means a sign of superiority. |

7 hours in and its like Philosophy on Peyote, LSD and 'only God knows what else'! Very entertaining and feels almost like something 'new' among all that is currently modern, even if it is 100 years old.

Finished. The ending was... well there was no 'ending' as such.
It was all about the 'voyage' and not the destination. Probably the best example of how, despite the 'theme' of SCIENCE FICTION/FANTASY being descriptive of 'other worlds' outside our own - they ALL are still based 'entirely' on this world, its flora, fauna and people. You and I know that a Klingon is based on some people of this planet, as is the 'Alien' of Giger fame, as is 'everything' - even in Dune. This story is a good example that the 'imagination' of human-kind hasn't really been stimulated from anything 'alien' at all. Not one thing. Even the last 100 years of Astronomy/Space Probings - have provided 'minimal' stimulation of expanding our perception/imagination/etc. Basically: Science Fiction over the last 100 years has been nothing more than one of the biggest 'lies' going around and this novel/story confirms that in a very 'predictable' way for its own genre of storytelling. ;) |
