There are times when it is impossible to recover all personnel...... Mike Durant was fortunate in several ways and was eventually recovered.  Two Special Forces Detachment D soldiers lost their lives trying to defend the site and both received the Medal of Honour.  They volunteered.

I would guess you are right, however it would rely on the US and UK. We do not know how the EU troops would fight. Those countries have been undermined with pacifist sentiments and comfort. Poland and the Finns would stand up.

I was watching an interview with a captured Russian soldier and he was lucky to get pulled out of burning tank where others were killed.
He was given a phone to call his mum and it was emotional. She was thanking Ukrainians medics for treating his injuries.
The soldier is so young… and they are not told much… and found out on Russian TV they saying how no one is dying and everything is going well.

Oh, I am not blind to the fact that European neighbouring countries have assisted in various ways to help Ukraine in their emergency. But, the pointless symbolism of throwing paint over an ambassador from Russia is not going to help the situation. You do not escalate a situation during a conflict by giving the Russians reason to continue. That is propaganda the Russians can use against the Poles, no matter how petty it may seem.

And given that the Russian ambassador was there to honour the people that died in WW2, it seems very disrespectful to survivors of Poland's own military conflict in WW2. Wait for a different time to make your protest. Not during a war memorial.

More than 20 years ago, we had a situation in Indonesia where Australian business people and tourists from Australia were getting harassed by Indonesian thugs going around wanting to bash and rob the Australians, simply for being Australian. There is a BBC report quoting Ukraine troops who repulsed the recent river crossing, that Russian units in the rear were ordered to fire on their forward units to encourage them to attack. If this is the tactic of their HQ, Russia cannot win in the field.

So, where is Russian air cover? And why have the Russians not used the navy to cover an amphibious assault on Odessa? We are talking about what was considered the second most powerful military in the world. Russia was said to have 10,000 tanks before the war. Even if that were true, the maintenance schedule would be gargantuan, and the personnel to carry it out would be huge. Russia does not have such a trained body of service troops. What we are seeing in satellite images are large tank-parks across Russia that are obviously not being maintained.

It is quite evident that the Russian military believed they could move massed equipment in blitzkrieg WW2 manoeuvres which only made them vulnerable to various types of rocket attack. The absence of the Russian airforce is most telling. It means they have spent billions on obsolete technology.

Reconnaissance and targeting by small, cheap drones has made precision strikes the norm, and drone swarms will soon be a reality. Radar suppression is a hugely important capability, and Russia seems to be falling behind. One thing I see remaining the same is the use of diesel engines.

There was once a time when RuZZia had a formidable military but those days are long over. One major factor in their lack to deliver decisive blows on the battlefield is Putin himself. Your simplistic view implies that Europe is a state of the USA. Try to sell that idea in any European country. None of them are merely paying lip service to the alliance. They could go it alone, and wisely choose not to. The US is the most powerful NATO member. That does not mean they get to hold sway over the others.

All the arms manufacturers in Europe, many you have never heard of, are getting to test their weapons in Ukraine at Putin's expense. And with expanded military budgets, the Europeans are coming to fore after decades of pacifism. The old ideology, of economic engagement as a guarantee of peace, is dead. With or without the USA, Europe now realises it must be ready to destroy the Russian military, if they cross the borders. They are already technologically advanced beyond Russia's capability.

I use "perhaps" to start the concluding sentence of my post because I do not know which way the world powers are going in relation to dealing with the Ukraine-Russia conflict (war). Allegedly, a section of Ukraine seceded to Russia voluntarily. Allegedly, other areas were overtaken by military force. Ukraine might not last another 12 months as a separate country.

Apart from volunteer foreign fighters fighting for Ukraine, and some elements of military aid by various Western powers, there is not much I can see in terms of actual help for Ukraine to ward off the Russians. Either the Russians are more powerful in terms of strategic economic loss to the world economy. Or the world powers are willing to allow Russia to take over Ukraine.

With all the claims of a Ukraine "counter offensive" and the imminent liberation of Kherson, the slow progress suggested the reports were all a matter of wishful thinking. With my limited understanding of tactics and strategy it still seemed a high risk maneuver (stupid American spelling of a French word) open to flanking movements.
But then I saw an interesting quote from a Ukrainian officer, and I wish I had kept the link. He said words to the effect, "We are not focused on capturing Kherson, we are focused on destroying the Russian army. This will be a slow process." And they seem to be making progress in that direction. There are way too many armchair generals out there in cyber space.

Putin, Lavrov and the Russian war-mongers were full of bluster when they ordered the invasion of Ukraine, even going so far as to threaten to use nuclear weapons. Then the army was stopped dead on the road to Kyiv.

The Western powers were slow to supply weaponry at first, but logistics are extremely complex, as the the Russian are learning the hard way. As the Ukraine fighters have shown their bravery and intelligence, the allies have supplied more technical and modern equipment. After all, one cannot expect them to hand over such materiel to have it destroyed or captured.

We are now seeing the ever increasing superiority of Western weapons as they are entrusted to Ukraine trained by the allies, especially in the range of radar evading rocketry. It seems we will shortly see the Abrams tank on the battlefield, yet nothing new or surprising has come out of Russia, and while their weapons may be inferior, their leadership and strategies have been embarrassingly amateur in all but numbers.

The Russian military and diplomats are shown as incompetent. Dissent among the powerful results in murder, and prison for protest. Even an end to the war will not change anything. The only thing that can save Russia from itself is civil war.

MOSCOW (The Borowitz Report)—Amid reports that the Russian front has collapsed near Kharkiv, Vladimir Putin complained that the only reason he is losing the war in Ukraine is that the F.B.I. recently seized stuff he needed.

“I’m not going to go into detail, but there were things I needed, very important things, that the F.B.I. has confiscated that should have been sent to me,” the Russian President said. “If I had those things right now, I wouldn’t be getting my ass kicked all over Kharkiv.”

The fact that materials intended for him are in the hands of the F.B.I. has made him question “whether America is really a democracy,” he said.

“I think if you pay for something—and I mean pay in cash—it should be sent to you,” he said. “Hopefully the special master will straighten all this out.”

There are reports that the military is pressing Putin to order a general draft and escalate the "special military operation" to a declaration of war.

Putin, apparently, is "resisting" these calls, but it would be a mistake to think that he's not planning on it.

Massive retreat has been a Russian tactic for hundreds of years, from Napoleon to Kaiser Wilhelm, to Hitler, usually followed by a massive offensive (internal, external or both).

It's more probable that Putin is waiting for a reckless incursion into Russia by Ukrainian forces which will trigger a 'defense of the motherland' position and catapult the operation to a full-scale war driven by circumstance and not by unprovoked presidential decree.

Someone should euthanize this Eckhart yapping dog.

What I don't get is why the Russians need to steal washing machines. It's like they haven't got any. Are they intending to ship them home? Or are they just moving them to some other bombed out house, where they think they are going to wash their undies?

The conscripts largely come from the far east of Russia, where life hasn't changed much in over 100 years.

They literally have no concept of the infrastructure required to use toilets and washing machines; it's like they've time-travelled from 1900.

They're shipping those "space-alien machines" back to their log cabins in Siberia.
