Title: GUEST POSTING Post by freediver on Dec 29th, 2006 at 7:27pm
I have added guest posting validation to help cut back on spam. What this means is that that guests (people who post without signing up and logging in) will have to copy one of those security codes from an image in order to post. This was a bit of a 'hack' so if it doesn't work properly please let us know. See the contact page if you can't post.

I've also added a hack to stop newbies posting links.

Title: guest posting has been disabled Post by freediver on May 22nd, 2007 at 10:33am
Sorry to those who have been using the feature responsibly. I have had to disable it because of a few people abusing the feature. Please sign up for an account and continue posting. Remember, please do not respond to trolls, insults etc.

Can they still vote in polls?
|

I think that is controlled by the author of the poll, so it should still be allowed if the atuhor enabled it.

hi freediver, did u reactivate the guest posting? since i noticed a few guests posts today.
why the change? |
Title: Re: guest posting has been disabled Post by freediver on Jun 15th, 2007 at 2:38pm
The problem seems to have gone, so I put guest posting back on. If it is abused again, I will switch it off. I don't think there is a need to switch it off forever. Not yet anyway.

Well... in all honesty... I think it should be permanently turned off.
What purpose does it serve with it on? |

I agree. whats the point of allowing guests to post-- Most members dont even do it. Maybe the members who have never posted should be removed? |
Title: Re: guest posting has been disabled Post by freediver on Jun 16th, 2007 at 2:23pm
I like to have it enabled so that members can 'try out' the forum for a while before joining up. Many people are hesitant to sign up to another website and give away their email address etc. It's also a hassle. We had some good contributions from people who only ever posted as a guest and who didn't sign up for an account when guest posting was disabled.

we don't have to reply to nuisance posts and the moderator is at liberty to delete them.
Allowing guest postings may encourage genuine posters who wish to not become a member, a bit shy or whatever. |

Ban it.

Should there be a poll? Will 51% majority win? |
Title: Re: Guest posting being abused... Post by sprintcyclist on Jun 24th, 2007 at 12:28am
I think it should need an overwhelming majority.
One good poster is worth more than 8 bad posters. To repeat myself : "we don't have to reply to nuisance posts and the moderator is at liberty to delete them. Allowing guest postings may encourage genuine posters who wish to not become a member, a bit shy or whatever. " |

Title: 'strange' posts Post by freediver on Jan 23rd, 2007 at 8:35am
If you are not sure whether a post is spam, check the email address it come from. If it is a .ru address then it is definitely spam.
Please don't respond to the spam. |
Title: Guest posts Post by Gavin on Mar 5th, 2007 at 3:10pm
hi freediver, i get the idea behind people posting as "Guests" since it gives users the opportunity to try the website before joining up.
that's fine, but can we somehow limit the number of posts by a particular "Guest" (e.g. via tracking of IP address, etc), since it is quite annoying when people constantly posts as "Guests" rather than joining up. is this possible? |
Title: Re: Guest posts Post by freediver on Mar 5th, 2007 at 3:14pm
Short answer: no.
If it becomes a problem I can switch guest posting on and off. I can also add guest posting validation, where they have to enter the code from an image, which might annoy them enough to sign up. |
