I never knew standards had sunk this low. "Rubber thongs and t-shirts will be banned as workplace attire for public school teachers in New South Wales under a new dress code released today. The rules, which the State Government says are designed to enhance the professional standing of teachers, includes a list of what not to wear. Clothes which display alcohol and cigarette branding are banned, as are overly revealing outfits". ""The vast majority of teachers dress very professionally, but for that small percentage that don't, this sends a very powerful message to them about what's expected," he told the ABC". A Liberal Party initiative. Clawing standards back from the grim state it was allowed to descend to under the 'progressives'. I'll bet sherri never wore flip-flops and a truckie's blue singlet in the classroom. 8-) |

"Homer - you cut the elbows out of that perfectly good leather jacket and put in tweed inserts! It's the other way around!"
Return to the good old days of the tie and suit..... I remember that the 'hard science' teachers like the Maths Men and the Psychics Guys etc all wore business suits and looked like Tony Abbott in Parliament - and the 'arty-farty' types, English, History etc wore more casual clothing. the Manual Arts types wore dust coats over shirt and tie.... looking for all the world like 'boffins' in some 1940's British movie about The Radar Makers and The Nasty Nazi Menace... or maybe The Foreman On The Factory Floor... the Chemistry Guy HAD to have a white dustcoat and look like Lister finding out about bugs on a slide etc...... A very real class distinction there.... The Head and Deputy Head of course - wore suits..... always.... |

I can think of a few teachers I would have liked to have seen wearing a thong.

It was our Arts teacher who was the focal attention of our schoolboy Lust-and-Desire. She had a magnetic personality ... the closer we came to her, the more this would elevate our Best Friend from the 'Weeping Willow' position to the Life Be in It 'Reaching Out' position. The further you moved away from her, the weaker the magnetic effect. |

Title: Re: Teachers no longer allowed to wear thongs in class Post by Kat on Mar 23rd, 2014 at 6:00pm I don't give a rolling root what they wear as long as they can teach. As for the reminiscences of past female teachers, it brings to mind the lovely Miss Baker, one of our English teachers. Early 20s, blonde, about 5'5", nice figure and face, used to wear mini-skirts all the time, and drove a nice LC/LJTorana SL. Affectionately known as Miss Sexy-Legs. Needless to say, English lessons were the farthest thing from our 14-year-old minds... :o :P |

I have never seen or heard of teachers wearing thongs in the class room.....I would have thought the head master would have dealt with such trivial matters if it is an issue!!!

I wear thongs at the school I work at but it's not public and they're not those cheapo rubber things, I'm also not a teacher. If I was ever told I couldn't wear them and had to wear footware that enclosed my feet, you can guarantee all the female staff not wearing fully covered footwear, and that's all of them, would be called out as a reason that I don't and should not have to.
On the other hand, I think all teachers should wear the same uniforms foisted on the kids, lead by example. |

Title: Re: Teachers no longer allowed to wear thongs in class Post by pansi1951 on Mar 24th, 2014 at 6:22am I used to work at a TAFE college and under the WH&S regulations everyone had to wear enclosed footwear, although some females wore open sandals, not sure how they would have gone if they claimed injury. Even the retail industry has the enclosed footwear policy as part of their workplace standards. |

Its just another way to demonise low paid workers since there are already laws about footware in workplaces.

:)
The school I worked at had its own dress code and had anyone turned up in thong footwear or leggings (without a frock over them, or in a top with spaghetti straps, we would have been sent home to change. The staff themselves set up a small committee to work out what was reasonable/unreasonable. I do think there need to be some standards but at the same time, people need to take into account the work that is being done. For example, if you are in a primary classroom, you usually have no such thing as a teacher's desk in the room, and you have very low tables and chairs. You have to get down to their level, I usually had to kneel on the floor, get down to their level for a lot of activities, correction etc, so some of the power suits that would look excellent in an office would be inappropriate in a prep class, too revealing. Often pants and top are more suitable. primary teachers also take their classes out for sport and games, they have yard duty, they might be taking art & craft in the afternoon. I would advise any teacher to ditch high heels, they are not practical outside. The main problem we hit was footwear. I can't see why women in classrooms should have to wear enclosed footwear every day, especially in summer. You people may be forgetting that many classrooms are not air conditioned and you can sometimes be looking at a smallish enclosed space, no coverings on large windows, with up to 30 children and teacher in it-gets hot. We came to a conclusion that substantial sandals were fine, but at the moment a lot of sandals, even some that cost well over $100, may be designed with some thong elements-usually with that strap between big toe and other toes. If the rest of the shoe is more substantial but it has that particular strap incorporated, allowed or not allowed? As for the bit about how staff should wear the same uniform as the students. We did have a uniform available, but hideously expensive and not a tax deduction unless you bought all elements. Interestingly, the men's version was half the price. But $100 for a polyester summer top is what the women would have had to pay, and that's only one top. But the key thing here is the purpose of the uniform. It is to help identify the students as part of that school and it is particularly useful on excursions, school inter sports days and so on. There's a growing tendency to say the teachers have to be the same as the students in nearly every respect. There's a reason we shouldn't. We're the adults. |

If the children have to wear enclosed footwear why shouldnt the teachers? Not only is it a safety thing but its setting an example.

not sure about thongs but I feel its a long time coming regarding the way teachers dress. when my son was in primary one of his teachers came to school in full kilt...even with the dagger in the sock... one of my grandsons teachers looks like a beachcomber I am sorry but these people expect respect... it starts at the door.. set an example guys... I know one teacher.. [high school] who shops at the op shops..she always looks reasonably dressed...and cheap as chips. |

Children don't always have to wear enclosed shoes, I have often seen sandals, although they always have to have some sort of strap to hold them on. Most school uniforms are designed for the sorts of activities children might be involved in. Kids spend a lot of time running around, playing soccer or cricket, they get into each other's personal space a lot in primary schools. Teachers should dress neatly but I can't see why they have to be identical to children in their dress. I know I didn't spend my day out in the playground running around or playing soccer. On the other hand, the sports teacher did and wore appropriate footwear. It's horses for courses. As I said, I am a bit over this attitude of some people that students and teachers have to be identical-have to wear identical uniforms or shoes or whatever to set an 'example'. We had one parent claiming we should have to wear the same hat. Why? If we were wearing a brimmed hat, that is example enough, in my opinion. Should we also require every parent who sets foot in the school or comes on an excursion with us to wear the school uniform, shoes and hat because otherwise they can't set the right 'example'? |

Just because there's a "no thongs" ruling, doesn't mean that any teacher actually got away with wearing them to work. I've worked for both the secondary school system and TAFE. At any of the institutions I've worked at, a teacher turning up wearing thongs would have been stomped on by their dept head.

Im not saying they should be identical. Its up to each school anyway but there are already dress rules in place especially concerning footwear. Footwear is a safety thing. @ my high school the students all rejected the covered footwear in favour of sandals to such an extent that they made it the new school uniform. Thongs and high heels still werent allowed though. Not a good idea for anyone in that environment. SOB |
