Language has a lot to do with culture and self esteem, just ask the Welsh, or the Icelandic, Cornish, Scots, Breton, Manx, Irish or Basque people; and not to forget the speakers of Shelta, in Ireland, Britain and the USA.

They are also useful for answering unwanted questions telephone calls.

A code talker was a person employed by the military during wartime to use a little-known language as a means of secret communication. The term is most often used for United States service members during the World Wars who used their knowledge of Native American languages as a basis to transmit coded messages. In particular, there were approximately 400 to 500 Native Americans in the United States Marine Corps whose primary job was to transmit secret tactical messages.

ll well and good - and while I heartily agree - that is about all it is worth - UNLESS .... we draft them into the military and they use that as Setanta said.

It's not as if they are going to die or anything from not using that language - and they will still have to use the lingua franca - all sweet feelings aside.

They would be better being bi-lingual and not just trapped in a language that only five other know.

It really is not a big deal, unless it perpetuates the myth of some sort of 'sovereignty' and such and leads them into conflict with Australia as it is today. Retention of all parts of their 'culture' is fine as part of their citizenship of this country and part of the rich tapestry of Oz.

I copped flak here for saying a past mate was great at yabbying - the assholes here said that was demeaning him - say what? He could fish and yabby a lot better than I could - ya gotta respect that over a cold one later.
