Manhunt underway after Minnesota Democratic House leader killed in ‘politically motivated’ attack

• Manhunt underway: A massive search is underway for 57-year-old Vance Boelter after the assassination of a Minnesota lawmaker and the attempted assassination of another at their homes about 9 miles apart.

• Lawmaker killed: State Rep. Melissa Hortman — the top Democrat in the Minnesota House — and her husband were shot and killed in an apparent “politically motivated assassination,” according to Gov. Tim Walz. State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were also shot by the same person, Walz said. They have undergone surgery and are alive.

Boelter’s Christian faith was also prominent in his life. In one sermon, he described being born again when he was 17. Boelter was ordained as a reverend in 1993, according to an archived webpage for a Christian charity he started, Revoformation Ministries. He told friends that he traveled to the Middle East to hand out gospel materials early in his career, his longtime acquaintance said.
