Perth man hit by e-scooter dies
Jun 3rd, 2025 at 2:08pm

A 51-year-old man who was allegedly hit by an e-scooter in Perth’s CBD on Saturday night has died from his injuries, a Perth court has just been told.

The man was left in a critical condition after the incident, which led to the arrest of a 24-year-old British woman who is visiting Australia on a four-month tourist visa.

Alicia Kemp will now have her charges upgraded after the man’s death, prosecutors told a magistrate this morning.

Kemp was due to appear back in court to apply for bail this morning, but the upgraded charge has meant her matter will not be dealt with until this afternoon.

Kemp was allegedly riding an e-scooter while intoxicated when it hit the man on Saturday night around 8.40pm.

Another woman was allegedly riding on the back of the scooter at the time and also suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.

Kemp has been in custody since her arrest and will appear before the magistrates court again this afternoon for a new attempt at bail.

City of Perth to suspend e-scooter hire after death of pedestrian Thanh Phan

The hiring of e-scooters is being suspended by the City of Perth as it investigates the death of pedestrian Thanh Phan, who was struck by one of them on Saturday night.

Mr Phan was the first pedestrian to die after being hit by an e-scooter in WA, and his death brings to five the number of people killed in incidents involving e-rideables in the state this year.

The Australian Medical Association says at least one e-scooter rider a day is admitted to Royal Perth Hospital's trauma unit, and is urging councils to take definitive action.

Seeing as these e-scooters have already been severely restricted in their use or banned outright in other parts of the world (for quite a few years now in some places) I was wondering how long it would take before something was done about them here.

But, in a country like Australia where money and profit comes first and peoples' health and lives are a distant second - the ongoing Covid pandemic is a perfect example - I'm sure the suspension won't last too long.

RIP Thanh Phan.

I think it’s a knee jerk reaction.

Out of the tens of thousands who use these machines daily it’s simply a matter of odds eventually someone would suffer a life ending injury.

The government at all levels have constantly pushed for the public to embrace electronic power transport and now shutting it down completely because someone using the renewable transport dies ( tragically) reaction is to immediately abandon the the whole new network?

They didn’t think eventually a event like this would ever happen and had no plans for it?

I guess you get that on the best part of $400 k a year plus a $200k pension for life the moment you quit or are sacked.

Brilliant planning by the labor government of WA.

They waited for someone to die before they did anything about it.

And for comparison how many cyclists, motorists and motor bike riders died today in Perth?

Plus jay walkers?

It’s called life.

It’s sad and all respect too the deceased family and friends but life happens.

3 letters in today's The West Australian.

Legal action? Yes, I'm sure that's coming.

And about time.

Little Johnny broke his arm at a local swing and slide park long ago.
The parents sued the Council for millions. For nearly 20 years, Sydney went without such urban play parks since the early 80s. They were dismantled and removed.
Then all of a sudden, with new designs of swings, climbing nets, slides and spongey fake turf, they were back.
Maybe there was a new clause in the law that prevented little Johnnie's from spoiling the fun for everyone.

It's not the machete, it's the Sudanese.
It's not the E-Scooter, it's the Rider.

Powered vehicles of any kind should not be allowed on footpaths with the exception of mobility devices and even they need to be restricted.

Not only do they ride these e-scooters on the footpaths here in Perth, but the riders are quite often intoxicated.

They're used as transport for pub crawls.

It was only a matter of time before someone was killed.

They should not be allowed on footpaths. I've seen so many elderly almost get bowled over by kids riding at full speed on paths and through the local shopping center. It's only a matter of time before someone is killed here.

Although, the police here are pretty good and confiscate them if kids are caught riding them through the center.

There was a recent death in Hastings (Vic) of a man in his 60s crossing the road when a souped up motorised push bike going so fast cctv shows…. Poor bloke.
There’s a story in news about push bikes that are not pedalled and are motorised… it’s illegal and cops on actual push bikes are clamping down on them. A lot of these bikes have been impounded.

They made Segway’s illegal… I think the company went broke?

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-06-06/e-scooter-injury-toll-enormous-perth-hosp...

“ In short:
An "enormous" number of preventable e-scooter injuries are causing lifelong consequences for patients, Royal Perth Hospital's head of trauma services says.
It comes as the friend of a man who died in hospital this week after being hit by an e-scooter in the city's CBD says his death was preventable.
What's next?
The use of hired e-scooters is under scrutiny, with the City of Vincent joining the City of Perth in suspending them and police undertaking "state-wide targeted enforcement operations".

Should the  WA government who hired the scooter be charged with man slaughter?
