Slipping rubber is better than broken gears if you look at my other option. You are not likely to break the gear unless you over feed it or feed it a staple/paperclip.. Slipping rubber is better than broken gears. If you feel the slip will be on the spool rather than the other gear, you can use silicon antislip as we used to use on conveyor belts.

If the cutters got jammed the motor electric current would rise to a high level.

Any properly designed shredder would switch off the motor before any gears broke.

It's cheap shyte made only for one page of paper and the gear is the safety valve. That doesn't negate your question which I think I answered pretty well.

But even a cheap slow blow fuse worth one dollar in series with the motor
would be enough to save the gears from breaking.
How cheap can you get?

Did you google one? Yes a simple thermistor could shut it off but maybe not quick enough. One gear metal and one plastic in the vid tells the truth. One is meant to break and it was designed to do so.

Old red motors had a machined metal crank to cam gear, the cam cog was something like bakelite, not metal, replacements could be bought that were aluminium but never steel. Why? Designed points of failure.

I checked Google -
I couldn't find any shredders saying that they have current overload protection
or even a fuse.
They sell rubbish to people and cause E waste
and worse than that - a waste of money.
It's amazing that all those companies can get away with that -
the products are unfit for use.

Or use them as per the manual and don't expect more.

This is one that I bought 4 years ago:

J.Burrows Micro Cut Shredder White S333

https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/j-burrows-micro-cut-shredder-w...

It still works fine - but it's annoying -

It has a run time of 10 minutes and a rest time of 30 minutes,
so you can't sit down and shred a whole box of papers in one go -
the overheat light comes on and it stops until it cools down.
