Surely $600m could be better spent?
Sep 19th, 2024 at 9:15am

Surely there are far better ways for the Airbus Albo and the ALP to spend $600m worth of taxpayer funds than on a footy team from PNG (that will not last without further Australian taxpayer support) to play in the NRL competition? To me, this seems to be an absurd and irresponsible waste of taxpayer funds at a time when people are struggling to put three meals a day up for their families and pay ever increasing bills.

Maybe the $600m could be spent on improving health care, or education, or bringing down energy prices or fixing our roads or any number of things that could be done to make life a little bit easier here in Australia for Australians? Don't get me wrong, I am not against foreign aid to help with health care, disaster relief, law and order, etc. But this is not that and that $600m worth of taxpayer funds that I contribute to as an employed person who has money withheld for tax each week should be used to benefit Australians, not a new footy team.

If the people of PNG and the NRL want another team in the competition, they can pay for it themselves.

The intricacies of geopolitics escape you.

This has more to do with keeping China from establishing a foothold in PNG, than it does anything to do with any football team.

China can outbid Australia any day of the week.

We lost the day we refused to recognise Papuans as Australian citizens.

I am well aware of this - but still say the money could have been better spent on other things. If the government wanted to prevent a Chinese foothold in PNG, there are better ways to do it, such as help with Police and/or defence, building schools/hospitals and training doctors, nurses, teachers. This new NRL team will not survive without continued Australian taxpayer support.

the papuans prefer to deal with australia and as long as we don't give them reason to go to china, they'll choose us

I don't necessarily disagree that it could have been spent elsewhere. But detractors will make that claim regardless of where it is spent. We're going to provide continual support regardless because the day we stop, the chinese step in. The main benefit of this method is that we will endear the population of PNG to Australia. Any attempts by future papuan politicians to tie themselves to china will be frowned up by a  population that loves their footy.

There is a reason the Romans spent so much money on gladitorial games in lands they conquered.

Albo is insane -
he needs to be locked up in a mental asylum
before he does any more damage to Australia.

Perhaps Albo gets to plunder more of their resources with this deal so it will pay off in the end Wink

It’s far more than just the 600 million quoted.
Factor in the costs behind it, the time spent by public servants and politicians and I suggest
We are closer to 900 million.

The NRL are owned by a news Ltd proxy.

It’s not even popular-

Rank      Most Searched      Most Attended      Most Participants
1      AFL      AFL      Aerobics
2      Cricket      Horse Racing      Golf
3      Football      Rugby League      Tennis
4      NRL      Motor Sports      Lawn Bowls
5      Golf      Soccer (outdoor)      Netball
6      Rugby      Cricket (outdoor)      Swimming
7      Soccer      Rugby Union      Cricket (outdoor)
8      Tennis      Harness Racing      Martial Arts
9      Basketball      Tennis (indoor and outdoor)      Basketball
10      Rugby League      Dog racing      Tenpin

It’s right up there with lawn bowls!

With homelessness now at a crisis level and cost of living driving more Aussie families out of homes and into tents  how a Labor government could DARE to give away 900 million dollars to help news Ltd is beyond belief!

Albo has no mandate to do this with our money.

Labor and it’s supporters should be ashamed.

I don’t care about Australians who are living in poverty or their businesses have gone bankrupt or those working hard and still struggling to survive.

BAN THE BURKA!

That’s fair more important!
