In Qatar they sentence Indian spies to death:

India ‘deeply shocked’ after Qatar sentences
8 nationals to death on reported spy charges

Qatar has sentenced eight Indian nationals to death,

India’s government said, following their reported detention in Doha last year on espionage charges.

In a statement Thursday, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said it was “deeply shocked” by the verdict and would take up the matter with Qatari authorities.

“We are in touch with the family members and the legal team, and we are exploring all legal options,” the statement said.

CNN has reached out to Qatar’s government but has not received an official comment.

The Indian nationals were ex-servicemen of the Indian Navy, according to a letter dated December 23 last year by External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, which was posted by Indian member of parliament, Manish Tewari, on X, formerly Twitter.

Tewari says the letter was a written reply to him in response to concerns he had raised in parliament over the “illegal incarceration” of retired Navy officers.

Maj. Gen. (retd.) Satbir Singh, Chairman of the Indian Ex-Servicemen Movement, said the families of the men were “distraught.”

“These men went to train the Qatar Naval personnel, and now they are being blamed for espionage,” he said.

But they were later released.

Qatar releases former Indian navy officers after dropping death sentences

Seven of the men have already been returned to India, but details of the case remain scant.

What would be stupid is to imagine there aren't likely US, British, Israeli, European, Chinese, Russian, Pakistani... spies operating in Australia.

And more stupid: to imagine ASIO does not have operatives in places outside Australia.

ASIS - as in Service instead of Organisation.  So much to learn about Australia...

So - what is the punishment in India for espionage?

https://testbook.com/ias-preparation/official-secrets-act-1923

The Official Secrets Act of 1923 was introduced in the British colonial era.
The act states that supporting an enemy state's attack against India is strongly prohibited.

Penalties and Prosecutions Under Official Secrets Act, 1923

The Official Secrets Act 1923 (OSA) is an anti-espionage law.
It prohibits the unauthorized disclosure of information that is considered to be a secret by the government.
The Act has been used to prosecute a wide range of offenses, including:

    leaking government documents,
    spying for foreign governments, and
    unauthorized access to government computers.

The penalties for violating the OSA are severe.
Section 3 of the Act deals with the unauthorized communication of a secret.
The maximum punishment for it is life imprisonment.
Section 4 of the Act deals with the unauthorized retention of a secret.
The maximum punishment for Section 4 of the Act is 10 years imprisonment.

Just heard on ABC radio.
It looks like the spying was covered up so as not to interfere with our QUAD partners.
The culprits were quietly sent home.   Roll Eyes

Surprised much?

India's 'punishment' was a public outing.

India has been publicly outed in the US and Canada also.

Another issue of Indian interest in Australia is Khalistani separatists.

Well - Indian spies in Australia must be breathing a sigh of relief.
In Qatar they'd be hanged but they would only get sent home if caught here.  Phew.

Weren't they released in Qatar as well?

Likely India has done deals to get them home.

Isn't it strange how democracies have something called the separation of powers -
it separates the Judiciary from Govt -
yet the Govt. decides which cases go to court?    Smiley

'Timor-Leste’s government was desperate to get a fair deal from the bountiful underwater oil and gas reserves that lay between it and Australia, a trusted ally and regional powerhouse. Success would give it a significant share of fields worth $40bn-$50bn, helping lift the fledgling nation out of poverty. Failure would blow the tyres of an economy heavily reliant on natural resources.
The game, though, was rigged. Australian Secret Intelligence Service (Asis) officers had been instructed to bug key offices of the Timor-Leste government. The listening devices would reveal Timor-Leste’s bottom line, its negotiating tactics and the competing views of cabinet members'. Bernard Collaery protested.
Q. Who is in big legal trouble?

'Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says he has worked with Julian Assange's legal team to strategise how to free the WikiLeaks founder'.
Biden says he's 'considering it'. Putin agrees and is closely involved. Xi smiles.
