I am accustomed to my name. But, I would probably use my middle name, if I wanted to change my first name.

I'm happy with Geoff.

But when I was a little kid, my mum'd invariably call me 'Geoffrey '
if I'd been naughty.  It was a case of uh oh......  WTF now?

My parents would use my full name, when I was in trouble. It took until I went to court, as an adult, that they would call out your full name. Perhaps that is where the full name call for when you are in trouble comes from.

A name is just a name. A name is associated with a person and accepted.

I don't tend to like or dislike names it is just who or what it is.

A category of name can be interesting. Common names (peter, sue, john) may infer something about the parents. Does it bleed into the person's self thought/value ? don't know.

More rare names also say more about the parents. (Aubin, Finlo, Florent)

In the end the person is just the person who is called by that name - its meaningless.

Like many born in the 40s/50s and perhaps the 60s, the names of the Children were usually linked to a common and often short set of names that had been used in the family line for centuries.   In some cases, woe betide the family who stepped outside the line and used a “foreign” name.    In my case, myself and my siblings all received the name of a family member long gone in line with the patriach’s wishes.   My Uncle and Aunt however departed from the fold and named their son “Terrence” which was not part of the lineage.   Believe it or not, they were semi ostracised for years because of that!

Not sure whether that tradition is still followed a lot these days.   For myself and my Wife, our kids have names that we liked at the time rather than conforming to the ways of the past.

I watched a facebook video about a woman who named her child "Clydia". She could not understand the reason why her daughter was getting bullied at school. The thought of naming a child with a name that reminds people of "chlamydia" is something that really leaves people shaking their heads in askance.

I dont like my real name but I would never legally change it because it is my ID for real-- I always go back to it when asked my legal name- Deed poll is a waste of time-  I likr forums cos I can change my name when I get bored with my current name. I just say my name is blah blah and thats it really.

Never like that with my family but common to for a second name to be family related. not mandatory just considered nice to do.

(ADDED)

Didn't think about it originally but Mr wife's middle name is her maternal grandmothers name and my middle name is the same as my fathers middle name. My wife got a better deal then me but I am not going to complain.

It's strange that on a thread specifically discussing the
likeability of people's given names, nobody seems
prepared to tell us those names they're happy with or
that they dislike.

Why is that?  What's the big deal?      Cool

I was originally named in English and after my grandfather, with the second name of ‘Vincent’ because my mother liked it and Dad was very active in Vinnies, our long enclosed veranda was the local depot.

I changed my surname about 10 years after my father’s death to ‘Mac ——-‘ [his Christian name]  in memory of him. It’s in Irish.

It is scary how similar the middle bit of this mirrors myself. My Dads second name and he volunteered in a Vinnie's kitchen one day a week for over 2 decades - maybe 3.

My dad was active with Vinnies for a similar time. One of the things that were considered normal, in his time, was that if they observed the woman of the house smoking then the relief would be cut a bit because the recipients had some money to spare.
Men, of course, needed to have a smoke.😀😀😀
This was during the Depression years of the 1930s.

The differences are stark so no real connection just coincidental similarity.

i.e  connected to Vinnies but in completely different areas and in different ways.

I'm already known en famille ...among La Famiglia - by my middle name... confuses the hell out of visitors...

Don Francesco Corleone sounds so much nicer than Michael .... and I DO hate being drawn into the family business all the time... I never wanted that... and I hate that pork pie hat....

It's 9:56 on a Friday
The usual crowd shuffles out
There's a John Smith
Sitting over there,
Thinking of being a lout.....

He says, Graps won't you play me some common sense
I've never really known how it goes
But it's fair and it's clear
Even if you're a queer
And wearing some young sheila's clothes...

And mothra at the bar
Has just fallen down
'Cause they set that damned bar
Just too high
Though it's far from two feet
Still will some people bleat
'Cause it's just high enough for a fly...

She says "Lefty's my boy,
And a sewer rat,
dining on stupids and beer.
And it's everyone's fault
That he opened that vault,
And told them his two kids are queer."

And Laughing Boy sits with his head up his arse
And thinks he's the head of the class...
But in the US Navy
What he's smelling ain't gravy
'Cause the head is
Where you put your arse.

He says 'Graps I believe I am killing jokes,
And blacks and all others besides,
For I'm certain I could be a stand-up man
If I could get rid of my vibes.....'

'Cause they set that damned bar
Just too high
Though it's far from two feet

dining on stupids and beer.
And it's everyone's fault
That he opened that vault,

And Laughing Boy sits with his head up his arse
And thinks he's the head of the class...
But in the US Navy
What he's smelling ain't gravy

He says 'Graps I believe I am killing jokes,
And blacks and all others besides,
For I'm certain I could be a stand-up man
If I could get rid of my vibes.....'

P.S.  it's a work in progress - no chorus you notice and a few verses to go yet - sort of an Inagadadavida, honey...

Speak us some words, you're the reason man
Speak us some words tonight
For we're all in the need of some common sense
And you've got it wrapped up real tight...

And Brian is a mail order Holy Man
He preaches at us for free
And he yawns in your face
Cause he don't know his place,
Got a Coon in his family tree....

He says, 'Graps, I just cannot fathom it,
Why everyone punches me down.
But I'm certain I could be a prophet here,

"Silly old prick beside himself,
Just switched to overload,

And they can see no reason,
'Cause there ain't no reason
Why Abos wanna do it so tough...

I don't like Apartheid,
I don't like Apartheid,
I don't like Apartheid,
I wanna shoot

Jesus, man - I saw that novosti thing about that 'creative sheila' who couldn't work out why she was brilliant but never got ahead.... ADHD they said - I look at most of my family and call them all 'chokers' - get within two feet of their tenth Ph.D and fail at the jump.... the old girl's nephew (one of) is the same - highest educated non-degree kid in town.... doing pharmacy again I hear.... did that before and lasted about a year or so... my brother's son was going great guns in academia - fell over at the last hurdle... WTF??

There's only so far you can blame Dysfunctionalia.... Dysfunctionalia (title of one of my books coming up) is a mental disorder - much like gender dysphoria - that most can grow out of.... just not my lot it seems ... nature/nurture... my little rascals are both successes.... Dysfunctionalia Pure doesn't HAVE to pass from generation to generation.... bro's kids, treated to abuse and neglect by their 'parents' - just as we were - just keep falling down.... all are out there Lost In Space somewhere.... and substance dependence doesn't help....

Ya godda stick with things to be any good at it...  Jasin sounds much the same.... UnsubRocky .... John Smith in some ways... mothra... philperth .... all trapped within some spider's web of their own mind.....  now don't get me started on Monsters From the Id again - that's social science these days...

Your MIND still won't accept it, Morbius..... Monsters From The Unconscious... something your mind cannot control ... THINK about it!!

Shakespeare's Tempest - that guy HAD to be a time traveling and highly educated psychiatrist... cut right to the heart of the human soul... even the bits without heart... Merchant of Venice ....Shylock was robbed for being a Jew by a Goy court - anti-Semitism way back... most people laughed at his discomfiture..... only Juden.... of no account and unworthy of having a contract upheld.... Adolph would have been proud.... Shakespeare was pointing that out.... not advocating it.... subtle man ....

Bro's kids are half Kooner, mistah - that might go some way to explaining their abuse and neglect - just saying... Ol' Bro went through a phase of Coonsheila fetishism ... gotta get into them Bleck sheilas...  as in WTF?

You know that rasping, demanding, hyper-crtical, abusive voice thing and the Eternal Victimhood created by her own actions?  She's got that to a T....  FFS... never grow out of it.  HER mother was a fine lady, so I blame Bro for getting into here when she was fifteen and teaching her 'his ways' - same-same madness.

Unless they had some class I wouldn't barge-pole most of 'em Bleck sheilas.  Me mate's daughter now - she's a honey and a nice person - just like he is... and his wife... a good bloke... great shape of woman there...

Pretty close to the mark... look at our 'political talent pool' and our 'academic' (in the soft sciences) Madness running free ... look at The Madness all around you

Look around!  Things could be worse, they said - so I did... guess what?

People wonder why I sleep with a hand over my eyes in a dark room with dark pillows cutting out light as well .... it's not due to photophobia - though that's part of it.... it's so these old eyes don't have to look at The Madness all the time... one part of me engages it every day like The Battle Of Britain.... look at this joint ...... another part seeks to shut it out ...

This is sibling rivalry.... Alfred the oldest brother.... oldest's are NOT leaders as many say - they are lost souls... I would never employ one as a leader since they lack balance....

Alfred thought he followed all the GOOD rules - but he was wrong.... time and again .... great movie for family understanding.... and for learning not to trust every rule .....

Tristan did RIGHT without following the rules ... Alfred tried formula that didn't work... moral v legal if you like.... follow the rules or do what is right.....

...

Following the 'family rules' is not always the optimum choice in life... not when your 'family' is a living disaster as so very many are here today.... Shutter Island Ward C of the Earth, which is the Ward C of the Universe... and Chuck ... guess what... we have GOT to get off this island in the sky ..... but until then - we'll just have to endeavour to persevere ....

Professional baby namer says new parents choosing ‘cool’ names that sound good on TikTok or Instagram
‘People want their kids to have that unique identity.’

A professional baby namer says new parents are now choosing names that sound “cool” as an Instagram or TikTok handle.

Steph Coffield, from Minnesota in the US, helps parents-to-be choose the perfect moniker for their child — charging up to $500 ($A760).

A mum herself, the 40-year-old said unique baby names are becoming more popular — and it has a lot to do with social media.

Social media....

Are you ready for her suggestions?

...

She said eight examples of unique and social media-friendly names include Ferris, Keaton, Bbwian and Townsend for boys and Birdena, Doretta, Mothra and Velma for girls.

Oh, FFS! Just FOrf! Grin Cheesy Cheesy

Oldest - regardless if it is boy or girl.
Is the 'Father's Child'.

The Middle Child - regardless if it is boy or girl.
Is the 'World's Child'.

Youngest - regardless if it is a girl or boy.
Is the 'Mother's Child'.

The Middle-Child gets no love from Father or Mother.
Instead, that Middle-Child must venture out into the world to find love from 'the people'.

Well Graps at the bar
He's a t'riffic one
He shouldn't just hide on the shelf
'Cause he's great when he takes the piss out of them
'Cause he still takes the piss out of himself...

And he said,I just take myself serious,
It's not just a rant or a rave,
'Cause I really believe,
When it comes to the heave
That we've all got our country to save....

Give us it strong, fellow countryman
Give us it strong tonight
'Cause we're all in the mood,
To get nothing but stewed
Because nothing we do makes it right.

Now Frank he's a teacher of politics,
With dividie he stands toe to toe,
When it comes to ideology
They give no apology
But just let it all out and go.

And dividie he sounds like a Communist
He loves the UN as if fails
And Frank calls him parrot
And gives him no carrot,
But only the stick 'til he wails.

Now Peccary the Trump-hating guitar man
Must love Biden the silly old fool
And he calls Trump a raper
But only on paper
Because gold diggers all love the tool...

And he says, I believe Trump is killing me
Since he made his return to the stage,
And he's running for Prez,
At least that's what he says
And half the US is in rage....

And the other half blows on its trumpets
And the Biden camp they're full of fear
'Cause it's Trump that they know
They've been pushing to go
And the bastard is still Far Ken here...

The name O'Hara has held a distinguished place in Ireland for centuries.
The current spelling is an anglicized pronunciation of the original Irish Ó hEaghra,
meaning “descended from Eaghra” (rhymes with “Tara”).
Bearers of the name are believed to be the generational offspring of 10th century Irish chief Eaghra

I don't like my first name (which is my maternal grandmother's first name) and haven't used it since my late teens.  I use my middle name (my paternal grandmother's first name) instead.

And, in case you're wondering, neither of them is Frances.  That was a nickname one of my schoolfriends gave me after one of our little group kept repeatedly calling me Frances by mistake over a period of time......

As I said - I'm known en famille by my grandfather's name... misfortune of being born on me father's 30th birthday was that I got his name and it was too confusing... so I became my middle name, which was grampa's Christian name..

Actually I don't like my actual christian name - which means something like 'strong hero' or something in ancient Germanic or something... ridiculous really.... I'm just a pussy-cat by nature... same as my son... well - except on the Rugby field... like Papa like son.... and daughter is a pussy-cat, too, who handles Tae Kwondo with ease.... don' mess wit' da familiglia!!

I'll become a cross dresser... tartan kilt, sporran (a small purse that is very deep and the coins hard to reach)... wee bonnet...

I could go for the clan one ... but I like this one which is the county one... that Tartan is for the county from which Wellington's Own are drawn ...

We're men - we're men in skirts
You think we're poofs
But we're terrible flirts
We chase up all the ladies
Send our enemies to Hades
And one hell of a lot more
We're men in skirts....

Has Wellington nothing to send against offer me but these Amazons?

If you want to know where the American States got their names from?
This clip is really good and shows that most of the American States, regardless of language are named after stuff like Big River. In all, not a very thought out nation of names for states.
Most are pretty stupid to say the least.

After a short period of time I see a name as just the name associated with that person. For me there is no other relevance or judgment to it. Not good not bad sometimes interesting at most.

I do wonder about girls named Gay or Karen and such unfair recent useage or name hijacking.

I worked on a comms design project that had a guy over from England. His name was Jim Bond. On the same project we had a guy from South Australia who was a submarine weapons systems design specialist.

I have always been called by my 2nd name... I prefer it that way. I don't think my 1st sounds as good.

However when it comes to legal documents & filling out forms that require my full name & signature.....

whenever I have to speak to someone in that regards I have always had to tell them that my preferred name & the one I go by is my  2nd name.....

and they keep calling me by my first.

Work, govt forms, Council forms, Insurance, super, etc etc.  Grin Roll Eyes

50 years of correcting them.

My brother has always been called by his 2nd name ... because his first is the same as our fathers first name.

Our names were choosen that when our full name was spoken it seemed to flow together.

My parents were going to give my middle name as "John". But given that "John" was a common middle name among male relatives, Mum opted for a different middle name for me. I have considered that perhaps if my middle name was John, I might well have had a completely different personality.

Newborn babies were named Alloy, Banksy, Daemon and Jihad in a record year for unique names in Scotland.

National Records of Scotland (NRS) said there were a record 2,362 names given to only one boy and 2,983 to just one girl in 2023.

These included boys named Boy, Demigod and Howl and girls called Costly, La, Na, Pasty and Wynter-J.

At the other end of the popularity scale, Isla reclaimed the top spot for girls for the first time since 2020, with 274 newborns given the name, overtaking Olivia. Freya is still the third most common name, followed by Emily and Amelia.

Luca climbed four places to become the most popular baby boy’s name in Scotland for the first time, given to 344 boys. The Italian-origin name pushed Noah into second place.

Leo remains third, and Jack has dropped out of the top three for the first time since 1996. It is now in fourth place and Harris is fifth.
