Medibank - the Russians did it.

Australia to formally declare Russian crime gang responsible for Medibank hack

The shady group behind the Medibank hack can be revealed, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese offering a stark warning.

November 11, 2022 - 3:45PM

...

At a press conference in Canberra,
Australian Federal Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw

confirmed that those responsible were in Russia.

“I will not take any questions because it is a very complex and serious ongoing investigation,’’ he said.

“But I do want to address, Australians today to give as much information as I can.

“This cyber attack is an unacceptable attack on Australia and it deserves a response that matches the malicious and far-reaching consequences that this crime is causing.

“The AFP is undertaking covert measures and working around the clock without domestic agencies and our international networks including Interpol.

“This is important because we believe those responsible for the breach are in Russia.”

Commissioner Kershaw said intelligence pointed to a group of loosely affiliated cyber criminals who are likely responsible for past significant breaches in countries across the world.

“We believe we know which individuals are responsible but I will not be naming them,’’ he said.

“What I will say is that we’ll be holding talks with Russian law enforcement about these individuals.

“It is important to note that Russia benefits from the intelligence sharing and data shed through Interpol and where that comes responsibilities and accountabilities.

“So the criminals, we know who you are and moreover, the AFP has some significant runs on the scoreboard.”

He also rejected the option of paying ransoms to stop the hackers.

“Finally, I want to reiterate, Australian government policy does not condone paying ransom, ransoms to cyber criminals,’’ he said.

“Any ransom payment, small or large feeds a cybercrime business model, putting other Australians at risk.”

While there’s no suggestion that the criminal gang responsible is state sanctioned or approved by Vladimir Putin, Anthony Albanese warned the country – which he did not name – does need to take some ownership of the crisis.

However, senior Government sources have confirmed that Anthony Albanese has instructed the AFP to name Russia at a press conference later today.

While the media has widely reported that Russia is the most likely source of the hack, it’s the first time Australia has named the country it believes is responsible directly.

“I have spoken to the Australian Federal Police this morning, about the further information that has been disclosed,’’ Mr Albanese said.

“Let me say this, I am disgusted by the perpetrators of this criminal act. And I’ve certainly authorised the AFP Commissioner later today, to disclose where these attacks are coming from.

“We know where they’re coming from, we know who is responsible, and we say that they should be held to account. The AFP Commissioner will be saying more today, but the fact is that the nation where these attacks are coming from, should also be held accountable for the disgusting attacks, and the release of information including very private and personal information.”

REvil was a Russian-based ransomware crime group that Russian authorities claimed was dismantled earlier this year.

Last year the group hacked an Apple contractor and asked for a ransom of US$50 million ($76 million).

But it is that group – or former members of that group – that are believed to be responsible for the Medibank attacks.

Medibank chief executive David Koczkar has warned he expected the group to “continue to release stolen customer data each day”.

“The relentless nature of this tactic being used by the criminal is designed to cause distress and harm,” he said in a statement on Friday morning.

“These are real people behind this data and the misuse of their data is deplorable and may discourage them from seeking medical care.

“It’s obvious the criminal is enjoying the notoriety. Our single focus is the health and wellbeing and care of our customers.”
There’s no suggestion that the criminal gang responsible is state sanctioned or approved by Vladimir Putin.

What's the bet that Putin won't be very helpful in handing over the cyber criminals?

Could he even give them a medal?

Putin is behind it.

...

The AFP has not publicly named the group responsible,
but security sources have told the ABC that authorities believe the culprits
are the Russian-based syndicate known as "REvil",
which takes its name from "ransomware evil",
and who reportedly enjoy protection from President Vladimir Putin.

To think… Australia is at least 5 years behind with cyber security!
And the amount of scam text telling me I’m $5.40 in arrears with Linkt. I’m with another mob.. I rang them to report it and checked all is good.
Apparently some have clicked on the link and had their credit card fleeced.
What are credit banks/card police doing? Aren’t they supposed to recognise odd behaviour and put a stop to it? Years ago that’s what they did for my credit card when unusual activity began. So why not that good service now?
Oh and yesterday I get a call from what looks like a nsw/Sydney number…. But says it’s from Bonang Victoria.
Supposedly eBay cold calling me! Then it’s disconnected… like as if I’m supposed to ring back? Like dam hell I will. Screen shot and reported sent to spoof@ebay. Even people not in eBay get these phoney calls.

Now back to Medibank and outdated cyber security…. There’s experts now working on it and located these hackers… so our “experts” here are hacking the hackers.
It’s good message to put out there in the world for next cyber breach. Instead of us looking like sitting ducks.
I bet our experts are clever teens and I hope they get paid well.
We need to employ our own clever hackers for our own benefit.
But…. this does not address our outdated cybersecurity.

I had a funny text on my mobile yesterday (I usually have all unknown numbers blocked for both calls and text messages but I was expecting a text from a company who's number wasn't stored in my phone).

The text message said:

From PAYPAL:

Your PayPal verification code is 123456 (that wasn't the real number, of course).

1. I don't have a PayPal account.
2. If I did have one I wouldn't be logging into it at 12:20am (which was the time the message was sent).

I don't know if the number in the message was a link to click on? It didn't show as a link when I looked at the message in the call blocker app I'm using (which was temporarily turned off as I mentioned earlier).

If it was actually a link (in the phone's normal messaging app) and I clicked ... sorry, tapped on it no doubt it would lead to some malware infested website. I deleted the message straight away.

Just checked the log of blocked calls and messages on my mobile (the call blocker app I'm using gives me the option to view blocked calls and texts if I wish to do so - I check every so often in case I've missed something legitimate).

Got this text just before 6 o'clock last night:

From "Google" (my quotation marks).

Your Messenger verification code is G-240*** (my asterisks).

I don't have or want Google Messages (which is the correct name, btw).

The code was underlined so it must have been a link to goodness knows where.

Deleted (of course).

lol... they're still trying.

Received on the 3rd but I just noticed it this morning when I checked for blocked calls and texts.

Different code this time (and I still don't have or want Google Messages).

Cheaper and safer to get mugged in an alleyway old school style than with Cyber.

Oh how so many jumped to the Cyber 'window' of convenience - just tap and go suckers. To think you all wanted a 'cashless' society. So convenient now to lose your money and you don't even get to look the thieves in the eyes. Banks won't be held responsible to any major level of security. You either bank with them or you don't.

lol... and another "Google Messenger verification code" SMS arrived on my mobile yesterday after I checked my blocked calls and texts.

I've now specifically blocked the sender (which just shows as Google - even though it isn't) so any more of these won't even show up when I check from now on.

I think it's hilarious but the people who fall for these scams daily probably don't.

Sorry to bump up this old thread but...

Russia now knows who hacked Medibank, but it’s doing nothing about it

Quote:
Russian authorities are stonewalling the Australian Federal Police after its investigators provided detailed intelligence about the identity and location of the criminals responsible for hacking the Medibank Private data of millions of Australians.

AFP Commissioner Reece Kershaw has revealed his agency briefed Moscow via international policing agency Interpol on the individuals and groups responsible for the hack, but his Russian counterparts had provided no assistance in response.

No real surprise there.

Russia is isolating itself from the world.
Things will not go well for Russia overall.
Not a team player.  Wink

Still, Russian brides are still the most popular in Australia for some reason?

It is simple. They hack because our systems are hackable. Fix the security. A Russian does not mean the government. (it maybe).

The system owners need to improve their security.
