Paywall Subscriptions
Sep 29th, 2022 at 9:11am

I'm sure you've all noticed the growing trend of media groups making you pay for access to their product ?

I refuse to

Aside from very specific, apparently, "exclusive" pieces - I have no need for
The Australian
,
The Daily Telegraph
or
Herald-Sun
.

ODDLY, the
Murdoch Press
- who have the LARGEST political agenda to indoctrate the masses - were the FIRST to start charging for the "pleasure"

The
Nine Network
have now started charging for access to their
Sydney Morning Herald
,
Melbourne Age
- as well as a host of regional newspapers that were once free as print editions

For the MOMENT, I'm happy with Australia's MOST TRUSTED news network - our ABC - and for slightly left of centre the
Guardian Australia
, when it comes to editorial.

So, can I ask you all - are you paying for any newspaper subscriptions - or would you be prepared to do so at any stage in the future ?

... and for which newspapers ?

The Guardian gives away their content for free but asks people to subscribe, so I do.  I agree with the right to ask to be paid for content, but I have no desire to give Murdoch money or read his crap

What is the point of subscribing? You might as well get your news from magazines and other bs sources. "Husband breaks up with stunner Ukrainian refugee after leaving his family". "Climate change will make it hotter in the next decade". Blah-blah-blah. Dad was ready to quit subscribing to paper newspapers being delivered to him with the lack of newsworthy stories.

I guess the question is, if no one pays for news, who pays for real journalism to occur? One more reason the ABC is vital

I read The Guardian and the New York Times on a daily basis.
The Guardian is free, but I pay a voluntary, nominal annual fee
to read it without nag screens, and I'm paying $4 a month to
read the NYT from an earlier promo campaign.  The NYT also
sends a free daily news update email.

Ah, YES
I'd forgotten all ABOUT that one
It's a compilation of highlights (if there IS such a thing, on Planet Rupert) of Murdoch Press content, from its other publications
NATURALLY, it's not comprehensive

Just why they made this sector no charge, is ANYONE'S guess

It has no 'long reads' or original content, it's just a news aggregation site.  For most news item the headlines tell you as much as you ever want to know about the issue. Subscriptions are worthwhile for original content, analysis, in-depth discussion, for access to writers whose ideas and take on things one is interested in.

A favourite aggregator of mine is aldaily.com. Two interesting articles on ideas and a selected book review every day.  It also has links to the best newspapers, magazines and book review in English (some paywalls, some not). It has a searchable archive. It was started by the great Dennis Dutton a quarter of a century ago and is now a subsidiary of the Chronicle of Higher Education. A wonderful starting point for intellectual grazing and a walkabout and discoveries.

Well, if ABC News is the only viable option, there is no reason to pay for other news articles. You get the news from ABC relatively free.

There is only one thing I pay for sport related.

The internet was set up for free and never meant for commercial use. I will never pay for news propaganda form anyone.
