Driving through floodwaters

Can you believe the stupidity of people driving through floodwaters.

Another family has lost a child because of this stupidity

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-09-24/sydney-boy-5yo-dies-in-floodwaters-nsw-ce...

Boy, 5, from Sydney dies after car swept away in floodwaters in NSW Central West

A boy has died after the car he was travelling in was swept away by floodwaters in central-western New South Wales.

Emergency services were called to the area just before 11pm, where they rescued two children — aged one and three — and their parents, who were found clinging to trees.

The boy was unaccounted-for until Saturday when his body was located by police divers in the submerged car at about 3:20pm.

FMD I cant believe the stupidity of some people

One of the issue is to know the "wading depth" of your vehicle.  Assuming
their Hilux was a recent twin cab 4WD, its wading depth would be around
75cm maximum. (The report said the ford was 150cm deep.)  You also need
to know how to cross a stream by travelling at a speed that causes a
low bow wave—rather than going super slow, or rushing it.  It also makes a
difference if you have a snorkel and/or sealed diffs. Your biggest enemy of
course is hydraulic engine lock, a symptom of possibly driving too slowly for
too long a distance.

Whatever, you should walk across the ford to assess the depth and flow rate
of the water before crossing.

Totally.
And if you are not game to walk through it, you can't drive it  Smiley

If I didnt feel the driver will suffer with this on their conscience for the rest of his/her life,

I feel they should be charged with "Dangerous driving causing death "!

One look at the flow and I can tell if I'm going to cross it.  If in doubt, turn about... drive back to a town and hunker down for the night.

modern cars seal a bit too well.

we had an old suzuki 4wd which had the doors off and a good snorkel

you could drive through floodwaters and she would fill up to your seat but she would not float off.

the main times ive nearly come to grief is getting the tyres absolutley caked in thick black basalt mud and then going down a hill (even a gentle one) with a bend ( even a slight one)
you literally slide sideways as if on ice
