AFL Grand Final Boats Non-Show Disappoint Fans
Sep 24th, 2022 at 7:24am

Thousands of footy fans lined the Yarra River in Melbourne yesterday
to watch the players pass on boats for this year’s grand final parade,
but many were left disappointed by a decision to turn the flotilla around
before it reached a key vantage point.

Fans who gathered on the Princes Bridge on Friday for an up-close view
of Geelong and Sydney players on the river were left frustrated that the
boats were turned around well before reaching the bridge.

A Southbank (next to the Yarra) resident was standing on the riverbank
behind a group of people in wheelchairs, who told her they had travelled
from a distant Melbourne suburb.

She said the group would have had the perfect view—if the parade had
actually reached them.  “They didn’t see a darned thing,” she said. “They
had to get up early, get dressed and come down and they saw nothing,
absolutely nothing.”

—Meanwhile, in Iran, the Baltic states, sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East,
Russia, and Myanmar life goes on...  Not to worry...   Dum dum dee dum..........

Tragic.

Just like the chaos at Sydney Airport on Thursday with all those poor footy fans scrambling to get to Melbourne for the AFL Grand Final.

Severe weather causes major flight disruptions at Sydney airport ahead of AFL grand final weekend

Quote:
Hundreds of people have had their travel plans thrown into chaos as high winds and heavy rainfall led airlines to cancel dozens of flights in and out of Sydney airport in the lead-up to the AFL grand final.

Approximately 40 flights due to land in or depart from Sydney were cancelled on Thursday morning, leading to knock-on cancellations in Melbourne, as severe weather warnings were issued by the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) for heavy falls and thunderstorms across New South Wales’ east coast.

Passengers reported receiving alerts about cancellations from 4.30am, and long queues were seen inside the Sydney terminal on Thursday morning.

My heart bleeds for them.  Roll Eyes

And yesterday's so-called "Grand Final Eve" public holiday in Victoria is
further indicative of the power of the great god of sport.

A Victorian Chamber of Commerce survey of 500 businesses on the
impact of the public holiday found:

    •  83% of businesses faced a bill of more than $18,000 to keep their staff away from work,
    •  74% chose to close rather than trade,
    •  75% of those trading operated at a loss due to penalty rates.

Premier Daniel Andrews should be roundly castigated (castrated even?) for
enabling this absurd public holiday.  More concerning is the sweetheart deals
of this sort between the corporatists—in this case sports and gambling—and
the government at all levels.

And of course one has to only look at the AFL's annual income from the season
to see that gambling on the game brings in a healthy $50 million.

Would that be similar to the "chaos" that the residents of Ukraine are
experiencing right now?  Just as bad;  about the same: not as bad?

One can only wonder.     Angry

Sums up the corrupt Media culture here in Australia, to which Sport is closely associated with.

It was a boring game today -
you could guess who would win after the first 1/4.
You knew for sure at half time.
How could the Swans play so badly after what was a good season for them?
They kept dropping the ball and losing possession to Geelong.
They looked like amateurs against the pros.
