Interesting they say past customers, that means that the keep all the information of people who are not their customer.

They should be fined big time for that. Under the Privacy Act they MUST destroy a customers private details when it is no longer needed.

Someone pointed out that they have to keep that info for 6 years by law. That bit isn't their fault as I originally thought. The wording seemed to indicate that they were keeping it long term and apparently that isn't the case.

You have to keep proof of transactions for 6 years, not the ID requirement. I'm in the process of buying a business and have just in the past few weeks undergone extensive training in this. If I need your license and passport details to approve something, Once I sign off that I've seen the ID, I am required to delete or destroy the private details.

Optus might need your license details etc to set up your account with them, but once it is set up there is absolutely no need for them to retain any of that information.

What's the bet that no one will go to jail?

Politicians are also culpable -
they voted for the data retention legislation that
forced Optus to store our information.

They seldom catch the perpetrators. Someone in the company done or authorised something stupid but it wasn't malicious. The person legally responsible likely knew nothing about it. The law in this area is not competent.

If they prosecute internally in future companies will be more likely to not report incidents.

The irony is that the politicians voted for that data retention legislation
to protect us from terrorism and fraud yet
that very collection of info has now opened up 10 million people to fraud.
The legislation has done the opposite of what was intended.
Heads need to roll.

Politicians most commonly achieve the opposite of their claimed intention. This was an obvious one.

Politicians are mostly not qualified or competent to make decisions on technology.

Our Govts are full of idiots.
There was never any need to retain that data
once someone had proven their credentials.

Optus could have to pay a $100,000 compensation payout
to every one of its 10 million customers.

https://www.tio.com.au/sites/default/files/2021-12/C_Compensation%20for%20non-fi...

That adds up to $1 trillion dollars.   Shocked

I am waiting for my $100K.   Smiley

I am worried.
What's to stop a hacker getting into my superannuation account
and stealing all my money?

According to the email that Optus sent me -
they have my:
name, date of birth, email, phone number, address associated with your account,
and the numbers of the ID documents you provided such as drivers licence number or passport number.

It's not that easy.

In order to access your super you need to provide original documents.

Even the ADF and Brian couldn't prevent the Chinese from hacking into their entire mainframe.

THE INTERNET IS NOT SECURE.
JOIN IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Now I'm sure Optus and many other Companies that require your 'details' claim that their Companies are 'secure', etc.
Which they are not - no Company can claim such a ridiculous thing.

Don't worry, Bobby.

Even if that happens you've still got all of those other millions.

As long as you didn't put it all into your superannuation, of course.

It's impossible to have any internet server online and be
100% sure that hackers will never get into it.
Optus was forced to do this by stupid Govt. legislation.
There is plenty of blame to go around.
Our information should never have been online -
it should have been on a server that was not connected to the internet.

From all those fake emails?
How the hell did they get my email address?
hackers are everywhere - I'm sick of them.

This is extremely concerning, as all those data are considered "primary"identifiers
by thousands of financial bodies and government instrumentalities, and even the
Australian Taxation Office and the Federal police.

All is well apparently:  Optus chief executive, South African Kelly Bayer Rosmarin,
has "apologised to customers" and said she was “devastated” by the attack.  Not
nearly as devastated as the nearly 10 million adversely affected Optus customers
I'd be guessing.  She even managed a few crocodile tears at an interview.

Last year, she purchased a modest house in Vaucluse, Sydney, for a mere $15 million.

Must be a struggle to live in such a tiny, cramped shack with only six bedrooms.

Hopefully she'll be personally sued and end up penniless.
