Sex and gender are different. Sex is assigned at birth, while gender is how a person identifies. Well they must have changed the dictionary since I went to school long before all this modern hype about what pronoun we identify with. Gender is not a term that's confined to human beings and it's also a grammatical construct.
It reminds me of my German teacher.
You haff to capitalise all nouns. You know what a noun is? It's something you can touch.

Die katze - The cat is feminine in German
Can you touch the cat? No! You try touching that cat and you von't get near it.
Sitz - Ja. You can touch your sitz. (smacks his rear)
Feuer. Can you touch the fire? No! Of course not!
The whole class was in hysterics, but we actually remembered the point about capitalisation.
