Transmission Question
Aug 10th, 2022 at 5:01am

A few weeks ago a garbage truck backed into the front of my pickup truck and damaged the front end (not my fault). The other day the vehicle was returned - repaired - and when I drove it for the first time it was scary. - the transmission was seemingly screwed up. The body shop took another look at it and determined it was very low on transmission fluid. After they added more fluid, the truck drove much, much better but now occasionally the transmission slips when accelerating from a very slow speed. I understand the radiator and AC compressor were replaced. The body shop tried to get permission from the insurance company to take it to a transmission shop for inspection but was denied.

What seems not right about this to you?

Yes, sounds like something is wrong.
Perhaps a call to the insurance company from you?

Even if they will not pay for it, better to pay for it yourself than risk auto damage.
It may be due a service/fluid change anyway

Tranny is on the way out, if it was low on fluid it must have leaked out somewhere was tranny cooler damaged?

Long term a manual is much cheaper than auto when you factor in tranny oil changes over the years it will add up to cost more than clutch replacement. Manual boxes don't need tranny oil changes.

I'm not sure I agree with that. Friend of mine just changed his clutch in a 1.5yr old Toyota Hiace. Was quoted $5000 for the clutch to be replaced by Toyota. He ended up getting it done for $4k with a mate of his doing the labour at a discount

I have two vehicles, both auto's, and i haven't spent $5k on both of them combined in the 7 and 2 years I've had them both.

His mate ripped him off.

Exedy Clutch kit $214 which would be better than original Toyota clutch- https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/153088112364?fits=Year%3A2020%7CModel%3AHiAce%7CMake...

Clutches are pretty generic i could get a Tilton Carbon clutch for Torana for less than $5K

It's not a massive job on a Hiace maybe an hour labor or 2hrs if they drag it out so $300 at most add $250 for clutch so it should cost less than $600

If you have a CVT Auto factor in $350 for gearbox oil and filter + Labor every 2.5 years.

Manuals are cheaper to buy and cheaper to own.

My mother has a 2006 Mitsubishi it's done 228,000 Km still using original clutch.

The vehicle is leaking transmission fluid heavily. Added 3 quarts. Taking it back to the body shop tomorrow. Will update. Thanks!

They told me to leave it with them so they can take a look. Thanks!

Here, they will generally do a diagnostic for about $100, but it sounds like you'll need a rebuild. Does the gearbox work better if it's hot?

If you ran it with low transmission oil, that would explain it. 3 Quarts - that's almost 3 litres or usually about a third of the transmission pan.  It could be anything from $1000 upwards.

You'll usually need an automatic transmission specialist. A body shop will not usually be able to help you.

Let me know if I'm wrong.

Ouch!  Nearly 3 litres down?

When the transmission fluid's low, your car won't generate as much hydraulic pressure,
leading to what's known as gear slippage—which commonly manifests as a failure to
accelerate properly.   When the transmission fluid is low, you may notice your vehicle
reaching higher RPMs while moving sluggishly.

I'd call a mobile mechanic rather than taking the vehicle back to the body shop.

It is a fairly big job but the price does sound too high. It is a horizontal engine so I suspect the engine would need to be pulled, but still they are equipped to easily do this.

Sounds to me like it was damaged in the accident and they tried to cheapskate the repairs.
