Why are people not allowed to shoot and kill the feral/wild/dangerous ones?

I'm (clearly) a city gal but I believe these particular feral/wild/dangerous koalas are called drop bears.

These ferocious animals are known to target humans and suddenly drop onto them causing serious harm. Death even 😩😔🥺

The original Drop Bear legend came from old Aborigine stories of the now very extinct Marsupial Lion 'Thylacoleo' which could attack from both ground and trees with a bite force pound for pound, even stronger than any big cat today.
The modern Drop Bear legend comes ironically from Whistler in Canada. A known Australian hang-out overseas where Australians don't assimilate with Canadians. The modern legend is designed to make a mockery of other peoples intelligence in ignorance of anything Australian - hence the belief back in the 2000-2010 decade of the Koala being the Drop Bear.

Personally, I would prefer an angry Koala dropping down on me than a Thylacoleo any day.

Don't worry, many domestic Australians did too.
The other one was 'Mud Sharks' (inland sharks).
Though I don't know much on this legend/myth/hoax.
At least you won't be scared of a falling Koala for want of a coconut in Fiji, now. Wink

Mud sharks ????

That's one myth I've never come across yet. I wonder how many more such myths are lurking around?

Fearsome animals which don't really exist. Baron might know of a few more.

Drop bears are subject to be made into an Australian horror movie. There is no truth to them other than the urban legend. I was aware of the legend status since I had heard of them as a child.

OMG I'm so gonna die! There ARE more 😳

7 fantastic Australian mythological beasts and where to find them

Jessica Taylor Yates - March 11, 2022

From the Otways Panther to the Australian Bunyip, is there any truth to these urban legends? And where can you supposedly find them? From the Loch Ness monster to Big Foot, anecdotal tales of cryptids - animals that many believe exist in the wild contrary to mainstream science – are very much alive and well in Australian folklore.

While international mythical creatures may have more notoriety, like the Abominable Snowman, Bigfoot, or the Loch Ness Monster, Australia is rumoured to be home to a plethora of bizarre, strange, and at times, terrifying creatures.

Whether you’re a true believer or just interested in a bit of fun searching for urban legends, spend your next weekend away scouting for these cryptids from folklore – you may just be the one to turn the legend into reality.

Australian mythical creatures on this page:

1. Bunyip
2. Otways Panther
3. Hawkesbury River Monster
4. Yara-ma-yha-who
5. Yowie
6. Burrunjor
7. Drop Bear

We have a movie called "Red Billabong" about the bunyip. We should have a horror movie about Drop Bears sometime.

My hubby and our boys love the movies Alien and Jurassic Park and Jaws etc. These are way too scary for me and our girls. Plus there are much more enjoyable non scary movies to watch which concern animals.

This is one example :

Gotta agree with you there. Anyone that pays attention to urban legends would know about "drop bears" from the time the legend was created. People made up the myth on account of camping trips in which the koalas would make that cackling growling noises (think the Predator's growl) that gave campers a good scare. Every now and then, a koala would fall unto the tents of campers, likened to being an attack. From there, Australians have added their own spin on what these new mythical beings were, for the sake of making fun of tourists who go out camping.

From July to about November, I tend to watch a horror movie per night. This year features the final "Halloween" movie to be released in October. There is nothing wrong with having your senses tested in a good horror movie.

The lefties like the Greens make all sorts of claims with genocide etc with Aborigines yet their numbers have been growing so no they aren't endangered.

The Aborigines are allowed to hunt our native species under some native title BS.

Yes!!!

Ok...let me tell you about my Chinese neighbours (I've often talked about them on OzPol). They're filthy rich (and very left wing) and are hardly ever in Sydney as they use their $4 million home next door to me as a type of holiday home. Anyway that's the background info on who they are ... well they have most of their relatives living back home in China in places like Wuhan (a wealthy commercial city apparently) and they have cousins there who work in the wet markets which opened back within months of the 1st Covid19 outbreak. Koala bears are sold as food for the Chinese in wet markets and are bred for that purpose.

Essentially someone imported a few from Australia to then breed for Chinese wet markets there. They are killed fresh on the spot in front of the prospective buyer.

Koala bears - Australian animals. Supposedly endangered.

And left wing countries like China who has billions of people are eating these Australian koala bears.

I would call them "koala bears" in my childhood. I stopped calling them "bears" before I was a teenager. When the Americans visited the town in the early 2000s, I saw some of them at the Botanical Gardens. We had a koala enclosure to look at, near the lagoon. An American started calling out to the koala "Koala-wala-wala bear". My friend and I just looked at each other with knowing winks. But, we did not say anything, out of not wanting to be rude or smart arses.

Only in the enunciation of calling them "koala bears".

Koalas, however, are on the endangered species list, after last year's reclassification of their numbers. There might be only less than 100,000 of them nowadays. I usually heard a koala growling in the neighbourhood nearby. The dogs were constantly barking at it. I do not hear it anymore.

It's the 'Media'-cultured Australians that pump out the most B*ullshit about Australia. Like Victoria being Mexico and this continent being 'South Asia' (australasia).
Once Biden (Media) got back in power - all the UFO's, Bigfoots, Loch Ness, Aliens and all sorts of b*ullshit rubbish has hit the Media.

There is one 'true' urban legend that I know of and that was the Mountain Lion of the Blue Mountains. There was, at least, an actual photo of the cat looking pretty scrawny. The truth was that the owner of Notre Dame in Sydney had to close down due to possibly either a divorce or PETA (which closed down other places like African Lions Safari, etc). Out of spite, he let his black Panther loose in the Blue Mountains where it survived for many years, but is probably dead by now considering the ragged looking last photo of it being spotted.

Everything else is just B-S made up by 'those' Australians.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Bunyip of Aborigine songlines has been corrupted to a more Hollywood perception.
As for Yowies - well they're just bush wandering 'Hobos' living hermit style and probably make alternative Ferals look clean.

Thank you MOD 👌

Quick Question :

Are Koala Bears an endangered species?

Only in the enunciation of calling them "koala bears".

Koalas, however, are on the endangered species list, after last year's reclassification of their numbers. There might be only less than 100,000 of them nowadays. I usually heard a koala growling in the neighbourhood nearby. The dogs were constantly barking at it. I do not hear it anymore.

Hmmm.

Baron what’s your opinion on koalas?

Yowies??? I’ve never heard of the term.

But I do know someone who fits that description perfectly (and he’s also banned from this sub forum).😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳

What???

"The modern legend is designed to make a mockery of other peoples intelligence in ignorance of anything Australian - hence the belief back in the 2000-2010 decade of the Koala being the Drop Bear."

I was bloody born here and I fell for that myth ffs ☹️😔😞😒

I often share stories about dropbears with non-Australians to scare the poo out of them.

i tell them the only safe way to walk through the bush is the have an open umbrella so they cannot drop onto you. They always go for the throat so you should have a collar, like a dog collar or something to protect yourself.

In the day you should be scanning the trees and at night, make sure you have your umbrella up.

You are the first Australian I have ever heard of that did not know it is a myth.... didn't think that was possible.

My favourite was the Funnel Web initiation with the new kids to Australia.

We would give them a cricket bat and tell them, they have to hit the Funnel Web as it jumps at them.
As we aggravate the Funnel Web out of its hole with paspalum stems, feeling it bite hard on the stem in the hole.
The kids would be standing in front scared stiff with their cricket bat ready.
Out came the Funnel Web pissed off and rearing up as if ready to jump at them. The Spider would jump a little forward, but not the metre that the kid thought it would.
Some threw the bat at it and ran.  Grin

The Aborigines are allowed to hunt these native species even the cute cuddly ones.

I hear they taste like a cross between the Bilby and Platypus

Aren't they an endangered species ?

The lefties like the Greens make all sorts of claims with genocide etc with Aborigines yet their numbers have been growing so no they aren't endangered.

The Aborigines are allowed to hunt our native species under some native title BS.

Oh so Aboriginals ARE allowed to hunt koala bears.

Did you know that the Chinese breed our koalas so as to cook them up for dinner?

Featherdale Wildlife Park - 90's.
Watched some Chinese tourists go all 'cute' about getting to hug a Koala on display with the Attendant ($10). By the second Chinese female - the Koala went psycho and claw-savaged the chick with the Attendant having a hard time getting the 'stinky' Bear off her.
