I don't know about Makita but I do know
that DeWalt  battery powered tools are great.
The trick with any batteries is not to put them
away in a cupboard when they are flat.
Always charge them after use.

https://www.bunnings.com.au/dewalt-18v-5ah-xr-li-ion-brushless-hammer-drill-driv...

I've got some DeWalt trigger clamps.
Some of my fav tools. Very nice to use.

Funny how some gear just feels right.
Well balanced, easy to use.

I have used  DeWalt tools - they are fantastic
but a lot more expensive than other brands.
You get what you pay for.

I have 2 old electric drills that use NiCad batteries and
both the batteries are stuffed.
The chargers were not even smart chargers
and the batteries became unusable in less than 2 years.

So, they performed exactly as they were designed.

Where are DeWalt tools made?

They manufacture their tools in the following countries: United States, Mexico, Brazil, China, Italy, United Kingdom, and the Czech Republic.

There are only a few named brands.
Brands that feature in most of the comparisons.

DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita, Bosch (Blue ones).
Any of those will be a pleasure to use and own.

Sure, a few other brands are more heavy duty.

I bought a cheap Chinese-made drill with two x 88V lithium batteries and charger for use with a garden auger for drilling holes in the soil.

Absolutely a good buy. Powerful and works well. It has torque adjustment, speed control, reversing switch, keyless chuck, a bunch of drills, and screwdriver bits.

Been using it for 6 months and works faultlessly.

Please don't thank me. Effusive fawning and obeisance of disciples, mendicants, and foot-kissers embarrass me.

I am doing my new security camera installation around the house tomorrow or the next day. Dad has let me borrow his Ryobi tools. I hope I can keep my fingers intact.

I've seen a few drill/impact driver comparisons among various brands.
It seems that the people intend to destroy whatever they are testing.
No normal owner would do that to any tool of their own.

In one they use impact drivers on screws that are FAR too big and too long. No pilot holes are drilled. To the extent that the drivers overheat, smoke and drip hot melted grease from inside them.

It is a destruction test. Not how anyone would use it

These destruction tests are great they show which tools are more durable.

How are you going to know if they aren't publicly tested to failure?

Yes, pretty fair comment.
If they were not tested to destruction, I would not know where destruction was.

Still check out this video at about 9:30 secs in.
It seems .......... pointless

Drilled a hole through the corner of a window to fit a cord through. Found out that the security system did not work as I liked. Had to take the system back to the store. Now I have a hole that needs fixing.

I watched it -
you would never treat a tool like that.
You have to choose situations that are within the
capabilities of the tool.

I will likely buy an existing house in Tassie—a silent listing. Plenty painting/sanding etc to be done plus plenty work in the garden so interested in the discussion on tools.

Packing up the house I found my Ryobi drill set—bought it for one use, haven’t used it since so should be OK for a while anyway. Also found a Maquita orbital sander.

I will need some movable scaffolding—my days of climbing ladders are over.

Ryobi are not one of my preferred brands, but use what you have at hand first.  There is not much 'wrong' with ryobi. Use it judiciously. It's not for putting a 12 mm hole through 150 mm of old dried hardwood.
Don't let it labour, it'll overheat or break something inside.

Better to buy good drill bits (Sutton) than an excellent drill.

Also, excess heat ruins the tempering of any metal cutting blade.
Once the tempering is ruined it is pointless to resharpen it.

If drilling into hardwood I often have a small cup of water nearby to regularily cool the bits in.

Steel does not have to get 'hot' to ruin the tempering
