Removing all their trade protections was never going to be a good thing for their economy, don't know why they didn't understand that.
There is no incentive for Europe to trade with countries outside the EU who are not competitive in the world market.
They didn't understand it because they had a tabloid media, a major player (News Corp) based in the US, actively propagating fake news.
Brexit was a generational policy failure that has seen massive economic loss, created
more red tape, and will see the slow decline of the UK. Who knows? It could see the dissolution of the UK itself if Scottland comes to its senses and is somehow allowed another referendum.
They were lucky to keep Northern Ireland - a political feat in itself, and for what?
The UK had it all in the EU. It kept the pound, it was out of the Schengen free-travel zone, it could control its currency and its borders.
In return, Brits could trade and travel freely in the biggest market on the planet, with the British government having a significant say in how the EU ran.
In the 1970s, the UK was in economic decline, after losing its markets when it lost its colonies. Joining the common market saved the UK. Joining the EU pulled the UK out of recession.
Trade deals with the US have stalled. Without Russia, another player is lost. Britain's left - maybe - with China, Canada and markets in East Asia. Without Europe, what's left?
Of I was a Brit, I'd be campaigning to get back in, but that's just me.
You?
