They are irrelevant.

If the monarchy was removed, corporations would continue to run the world just as they do now.

Nice work from Shell to get one of their ex-employees to run the UK.

Are you sure? In the UK, the working head of state lives in a shoddy townhouse and leaves all the pomp and pageantry to the monarchy. Would you rather the two positions be combined?

Funny how these 'Pro-Republicans' here in Australia seep from the Media side of life. With the likes of Thomas Keneally, Bryan Brown, Fitzsimmons and more - all dependent on the Media.

What has the Media got to do with Politics?
It's the Entertainment Industry more than anything.

Maybe they need Australia to become a Republic so that this country can re-invigorate the Media's self-destructive Gay/Trans Democratic North Party - so that it can label Australia like the former Confederate South and call us out for 'Enslaving Blacks'?

Exactly. It's like they are trying to shame people into voting for a republic, because they cannot come with a model people actually want.

Nice use of socks dude.

The site earns money form various 'interest groups' to promote or denigrate various subjects e.g. promote the monarchy, denigrate communism, deny climate change.  Join the dots about who that might be but they all line up as 'Right Wing' views.

If you want to do that, create sock accounts, post then agree with yourself, it gets the hits up and gives the customers the impression that they have spent wisely.

Then when people like me come along and argue with him, he wins because the post rate goes up.

See how it works?

The Republican movement needs a new narrative. It has to deliver value for money, not just change for change's sake. The present system works as well, if not better, than most governments around the world. If the only justification is that the Australian head of state should be Australian, it can be argued, he or she, already is. As for this conspiracy theory that secret meetings in high places twist the arm of the GG, well that's bloody childish.

The Republicans need to stop asking Yes or No, and start presenting complete models with the necessary constitutional amendments in detail. In that way, they might whittle down opposition, even if it takes time. They also need to stop accusing their countrymen of being without self-esteem due to our recognition of the good parts of Australia's British heritage. Now pull your thumbs out of your arses and start acting like real and inclusive statesmen.

Well said Issuevoter.

Republicans seem more like 'Americans' trying to undermine Australia's 'British' connection more than anything else.
Telling us that we should become a Republic but not really offering up anything constructive as to why.

Excuse me! I may have posted this elsewhere but it very much applies here too!

I think you'll also find that there are lots of Gen X (onwards) Conservatives in Australia who are sick of the chronic hypocrisy perpetually on show by this dysfunctional inbred family. Times have changed, people are more educated ie they have a fair grasp of history and politics and can see through the BS.

The sooner Australia becomes a Republic the better. And it WILL be better! Change the flag too while you're at it! It's high time for Australia to reflect its Australian essence. Not that of England's!

Is it any wonder we've had so much trouble in the area of reconciliation with Aboriginal and other indigenous groups? We must move forward together - otherwise we CANNOT move forward at all!

And no more excuses re what type of Republican model either! We're Australians! That means we're smart! We've proven ourselves many times since Federation!

If you think sitting around in the cobwebs of an antiquated former colonial power's traditions is going to help Australia move forward (after some 235 years) then you're dreaming!

Australia has changed and is still changing! As I type! It's time to refresh our national profile and international identity to reflect our truth as a people who are ONE ... but also MANY!

Which reminds me ...refresh and renew the National Anthem while you're at it!

In fact .. THIS is our chance to renew our commitment to each other as representatives within a unified Australian cultural identity.

Seriously let's do this! It's overdue!

That is the model quoted in the OP. They appear to think that if they make the model complicated and circuitous enough, people will think it is a good idea. The powers they want to give the HOS appear to be similar to the GG, yet despite it's complexity it fails the most fundamental requirement - a HOS that is somewhat detached from the regular political machinations. Our current model achieves this. The proposed model is a complicated version of getting the voting public to choose between a small number of Labor and Liberal stooges. With a lot of wishful thinking and arm waving, the republicans would have us believe that the elected stooge would act impartially.

It is basically the same model, but without the key advantage that the monarch provides. It's like they got a bunch of school students to invent something in an afternoon session. It lacks both originality and comprehension of the real issues.

Currently, the only way to become Australia's Head of State is to be born into a certain family (on the other side of the planet) and to be a certain religion.

Anyone who thinks that is acceptable in our secular sovereign nation is not a real Australian.

See, this is idea, that only a Republican can be Australian, is where they have their heads stuck up their arses. And it just might be challenged by the indigenous, who believe they are the real Australians. Its the same as saying you cannot possibly be Australian unless (fill in the blank with your particular prejudice.)

We are a secular country.

However, in order to be the HOS of this country, one must be Protestant Anglican.

Do you think that's acceptable?
