I suspect that's more anthropomorphism.

The Orcas didn't want to eat the whale for whatever reason, being sick maybe?
Freeing the ropes was either a coincidence or they were playing with them and they came free.

I think they are clever enough to do it out of boredom or actual concern. All marine mammals would have a fear of drowning, so it would make sense for the intelligent ones to be able to relate.

And then there's this clip (scroll down) on this site where 50 Orca take out an adult Blue Whale by skinning it, biting its dorsal fin off, etc - which took 6 hours for the Big Blue to die.

My questions to the Blue Whale is "Why didn't you dive down and away, being able to dive deeper than Orca? Why didn't you swim away, being able to swim faster than Orca?"
