Steak & Beer
Jul 8th, 2021 at 11:49pm

Every day (well, almost every day) I go to the nursing home and feed my poor old dad lunch.

Because of the risk of pneumonia he has to have thickened water and mashed up food.

It's smacking awful.

When I leave, I always ask him if there's anything he wants - anything I can get him.

He always says the same thing: "I'd just like a nice steak and a cold glass of beer".

I could give it to him, but it would most likely kill him.

Breaks my heart every time.

So, everyone go out and have a steak & beer tomorrow - you never know when it will be your last.

Enjoy today like it's your last day.

Smiley

Hope your dad is doing OK, Greg.

Never heard of "thickened water" before but it sounds awful.

Would be great if he could have a nice steak and a beer when the weather starts to warm up a bit in the coming months.

I'd never heard of thickened water before either.

They have this stuff in a dispenser bottle - looks kinda like a hand sanitiser bottle - and they put a few squirts into his glass, stir it around and the water becomes more viscous.

Actually, I just googled it and found the exact one they use:

https://store.independenceaustralia.com/precise-thick-n-instant-single-serve-bot...

I haven't tasted it myself, but just the look of it puts me off.

Anyway, he might be able to come off the thickened liquids next week.

Not sure the poor old bugger will ever get to eat a steak again though.

It is heartbreaking Greg. My Dad was a heavy smoker all his life, ended up with emphysema and needing oxygen to breathe.  Toward the end he said he would like a cigarette. My thought was 'What does it matter now?' As a non smoker I had none to give him however I may just have done so had I the chance.

I understand your message to mean "live every day like it was your last". But I have had one too many steaks and beers that got me to where I am today. We should learn to love living and live in moderation. Have the power to change what we can and not worry about that which we can't.

My mother was on it - she hated it. Pretty sure my brother put some in a beer for her though - only once and she didnt want it again. she used to sneak unthickened water sometimes. It was just morning and evening she would choke.
