But these days, unless you have a good educational background, and a job set up for you in Australia, you would have to rely on your ethnicity to force the Australian immigration to let you come to Australia. And even then, you would be forced to learn English better than you have already been taught and accustom yourself to the culture of the land.
And if you think that migrants from a non-European background bring new recipes to Australia, you have to be fairly naive to think that this is a good way to justify mass non-Western immigration to Australia. There are these things called cookbooks, cooking shows, the internet and other things you could have found without the need for mass migration from non-Western societies.
What you should have said, Brian, is that migration from non-Western societies to Australia have helped build good relations with the countries from that the migrants originated. And that is if the migrants are law-abiding citizens to Australia. We do not mind the new potential translators, the ping pong competitors we could have compete for Australia at the Olympics, the people that come along and have different or better ways to do things that benefit Australia. But, we can limit those to the migrants that do help Australia in those ways. Good points. The Olympics occur only every four years (or five in this case). Ordinary Australians interact more directly with the cuisine. Today's "Al Fresco" coffee culture came from Italy and Greece. The greasy fish and chip shop has been supplemented by the Pizza Shop and the Chinese/Vietnamese/Thai takeaway. Third worlders bring no other improvement, apart from cuisine. And that's not necessarily an improvement, often just variety. And Australia doesn't need a million third worlders every three years just to have a variety of different things to eat and strange cultural festivals to avoid or attend. A million Brits and Western Europeans every three years would be too many. That many third worlders is over the top too many. Nobody has ever pointed to any cultural improvenents Asians, Chinese, Indians, Africans, Arabs have made to Australian or Western culture generally. The reason is that Australian and generally Western culture is more humane, freer, more amiable, safer, more cooperative, convivial - in short, better - than any of them. That may be emotionally uncomfortable but it is objectively, empirically true. The best migrants see and know that so they assimilate to it. The worst are indiffierent or hostile to it. Cuisine - "Al Fresco" dining culture, Italian/Greek/French/Spanish/German/Yugoslav/Lebanese/Syrian/Indian/Thai/Vietnam ese/Chinese/Japanese/Korean cuisines. Attitudes - For more most Australia a far more relaxed way of viewing the world. Sports - Soccer/Lacrosse/Hockey Overall, a far more cosmopolitan view of the world. Before Gough's election, Australia was moribund and lifeless. It revolved around Cricket, Aussie Rules Football and meat and three vegatables, getting pissed and beating up the wife and kids or worse. So no third world cultural improvements, then. Just the changes that happened across the West everywhere - but not in the third world.
