Union Outraged At Secret Plot To Privatise Post
Apr 14th, 2021 at 3:40pm

CPSU OUTRAGED AT COALITION’S PLOT TO PRIVATISE POST   Angry
APR 14, 2021 CPSU Union
Yesterday’s Senate estimates inquiry into Australia Post revealed the Morrison Government’s secret plan to privatise Australia Post services.   Angry

The content of the report by private consulting firm Boston Consulting Group was finally revealed by former Australia Post CEO Christine Holgate during yesterday’s Inquiry. The report recommends privatising parcel post and ending financial services in post offices.

CPSU members in Australia Post are horrified by this news and demand the Government make a commitment to keep Australia Post in public hands.

The report was initiated by the Coalition and was kept secret from staff and Senate estimates despite requests from the CPSU and senators until former Australia Post CEO Christine Holgate revealed it yesterday.

This makes the Coalition’s privatisation agenda even more blatant than the Minister’s stacking of the Australia Post board with mates like former Liberal Party director Tony Nutt, and ignoring their legislative obligations to consult with employee representatives like the CPSU upon appointing new directors. (Australian Postal Corporation Act 1989 - s 73 (4) )

Of the current board members, two current board members’ terms expire this year - Tony Nutt (March) and Bruce McIver (December). This will present two options for the Minister: to continue stacking the board with LNP insiders who seek only short-term profit, or to put the Australian community first.

QUOTES ATTRIBUTABLE TO MELISSA DONNELLY, CPSU NATIONAL SECRETARY:
"History has shown that privatisation of public services usually results in someone making more money off of us, not the community getting more for their money. Our members know that privatisation will result in lower wages, less job security and prioritising profit over service delivery.

Australians own Australia Post – we should all be outraged that that our federal government is underhandedly trying to sell off our postal service and focusing on profit instead of a culture that creates quality of service for the community and job security and wellbeing of postal staff.

Decisions about Australia Post need to be made with community members’ and workers’ welfare in mind, not short-sighted profit margins and one-eyed ideology.

Post staff want to be part of the board selection process to guarantee the future direction of Australia Post will prioritise a culture of genuine respect, job security for Australia Post’s workforce, and Australia Post’s ability to provide a service that meets community needs and expectations."

Albo... ALBO... wake up, Albo... is there an Albo in the house?

Where's the clear policy statement that privatisation of public assets and utilities will cease forthwith by law?  We know the LNP will never back off from that one no matter how many times it visits disaster on the common folk and creates massive rises in costs of living and thus inflation and division.... where does Labor stand on this?

We know you're all in it for what you can get - not the greater good for the nation as a whole - but still - you could at least pretend, then later back down and say it 'was an economic necessity' given the poor state of the economy under the LNP or something.... budget crises... commissions of idiots... you know... let's put it to committee... give some mates on already fat salaries some more ready to sit on a farken committee.. what do they think they are there for?  To sit around and scratch their balls or fannies all day and occasionally play act on the floor of the house?

Do any workers or business people get extra to sit on a committee to discuss 'future directions of the business'?  FFS.... this has to stop...

Australia Post offering an alternative to the banks who are going MIA in the bush - and its head cops a bullet and then the Guv want to sell it off and dump the banking?

A friend in the Union Movement said that they knew the Tories were up to no good trying to privatise Australia Post but the unions lacked evidence to actually prove it.  Appears they were justified in their opposition.

The problem with privatisation of postal services is that it won't work.  It has failed in the UK and it definitely has failed in the US.   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

APRIL 13 2021 The Islander.
Ex-Post boss lashes secret privatisation

Christine Holgate told a Senate hearing the review on privatisation should have been made public.

Australia Post's former chief executive has lashed the Morrison government for silencing her attempts to speak out against a secret investigation into further privatising the service.

Christine Holgate believes she "wasn't popular" with Australia Post chair Lucio Di Bartolomeo and ministers over her opposition to a confidential business strategy review.

Labor senator Kim Carr said the report recommended 5000 to 8000 job cuts and the closure of 190 post offices, along with reductions in delivery standards.

Ms Holgate told a Senate hearing in Canberra the review should not have been kept from the public.

"We should stop having secret reviews. Australia Post is an asset for all Australians," she told Senator Carr on Tuesday.

"Senator, I actually think the implications are worse than what you think."

In bombshell evidence to the inquiry, Ms Holgate accused Mr Di Bartolomeo of misleading parliament when he said he had not read the Boston Consulting Group review.

She said he had multiple copies of the report, met with BCG and top bureaucrats, and attended a five-hour board meeting about its contents.

"I find it almost impossible to believe a chairman could forget that," Ms Holgate said.

"Why would you pay $1.3 million for a report you just flick through?"

Mr Di Bartolomeo categorically denied he considered any move to privatise the service.

He said he corrected evidence to the Senate about only seeing a draft of the BCG report after realising he had seen the final version.

"I've never lied to Senate estimates."

Mr Di Bartolomeo said the report had no specific recommendations but did identify ways to cut costs.

He said there were no plans to change local post offices, particularly in rural and regional areas.

"We won't be closing or reducing the LPOs."

Ms Holgate said government minister Jane Hume blocked Australia Post from answering questions about the proposals at a parliamentary inquiry last month.

"I apologise that I was never able to speak up before, because I do appreciate you've asked me many times but we are silenced," she said.

The former Australia Post boss, who has the backing of hundreds of post office licensees, said a similar push to privatise the parcel aspect of the business in the UK sparked legal action.

"The post offices went bankrupt," she said.

So the coalition requested a report from Boston Consulting. They delivered the report.

That makes it not a secret.

That also doesn't make it a a fait accompli that they will act on the report. Roll Eyes
