Amir Mohammed Abdul Rahman al-Mawli divulged so many secrets to US interrogators while he was a prisoner in Iraq in 2008 that they were able to capture or kill several key suspects, newly declassified documents show.
Described as being “very co-operative” by US interrogators, Mawli gave detailed descriptions of his comrades, including where they liked to eat lunch.
Mawli, 44, a former officer in Saddam Hussein’s army, was named leader of Islamic State in November 2019 after the death of its founder and “caliph”, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, in a US raid.
US intelligence agents later realised that he had been their prisoner — and informant — while detained in 2008.
