Dancing with dogs requires a great deal of training of the dogs, a strong bond between the trainer/Pack leader and the dogs.

It also requires dogs to take cues from the music and to follow pointing gestures. Just as well then that dogs are the only animal to follow our pointing gestures.

Without musical cues the dogs, when moving away from the person, would have no cues at all. You would not use terriers, the little bastards be too likely to keep moving away if they come across a scent of a rat or food. Border collies, bred for obedience and intelligence are much more the sort of dog you would use.

BTW—herding is the redirection of the dogs’ predatory instincts.
