There’s a reason the name Andrew Laming has never featured on any “possible for promotion” lists during his 17 years as a federal politician.

It’s simple, really. Soon after Laming first won the Moreton Bay seat of Bowman in 2004, after it was ruled over as a fiefdom by Labor’s Con Sciacca for five almost uninterrupted terms, he was noticed by his colleagues.

He was noticed for the wrong reasons. His behaviour was seen as immature. His judgment was regarded as off the mark. His arrogance could have been given its own postcode.

In the old-school days of politics he was what was known as “capital gain”. You would like to buy him at your price and sell him at his.

Until this past week, these behavioural shortcomings (to be polite) were at their most dangerous in 2007 when Laming was one of three Liberal MPs investigated by the federal police for alleged breaches of parliamentary entitlements, including employment of certain people and printing allowances.

The inquiry cleared the three prior to the 2007 election but rumours swirled throughout Queensland political circles, mainly in relation to Laming’s conduct. He never faced any publicly revealed allegations but some serious claims were made in the never quiet corridors of power.

After the 2007 election, when the MP was taken to the edge of defeat, holding on by just 64 votes after a swing just short of 9 percent, Laming put his head down for a while but his activity on what were then emerging social media platforms was soon being monitored by his opponents and many constituents.

Laming had one half-hearted champion in national politics when Tony Abbott was Liberal leader. He made the Bowman MP a shadow parliamentary secretary for indigenous health – a passion the pair shared – but this support didn’t result in an actual spot on the front bench when the Coalition won power in 2013.

One of the reasons was the already obvious risky social media activity – particularly an instance on Facebook when Laming “fat shamed” a constituent in 2012. This, coupled with the often first-hand knowledge of the MP’s edgy behaviour in and around Parliament House, kept him on the outer.

It also put him at odds with many of his local branch members – a number of whom were banished for speaking out against Laming three years ago when he was up for preselection prior to the 2019 election.

Also in Craig Thomsons case even if he had Gillards support he asked to be suspended from the Labor party and sit on the cross bench, which is what should have happened to Laming.

So the two aren't equivalent.

The party system is broke, cods.  Accept that - wait until you see what feminised Labor get up to..... such little pecadilloes as photographing women's panties pale into insignificance compared to the direct attacks on civil and legal rights.

Labor will install a university-style Star Chamber to hear tales of sexual impropriety, will introduce instant incarceration for men accused by women, will install a regimen in which women will be believed at any costs and falc everyone else, will use the amazing 'standards' pumped by the feminists meaning anything a man does or says is wrong and everyone will be treading on egg shells and frightened to speak out against social and legal atrocities, and will set about trying to establish feminist hegemony in the political sphere in this nation, along with all the other -ism's that hang on the skirt-tails of lunatic feminists.

You are confused, Grasshopper - you cannot support the Evil Emperor and Empress by saying that only one of the two is Evil.

Are you sure you want to go on supporting the girls and not support all good people instead?

I heard Andrew Laming in the wireless, resolutely defending and justifying his actions.

He showed no sensitivity at all.
No consideration whatsoever.

Yeah Cods, how about a bit of honesty.    Craig Thomson committed his dealings OUTSIDE of Parliament.  When it blew up in April 2012 Thomson asked to be suspended from the Labor Party after a discussion with the then Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, and announced his intention to sit on the crossbench as an independent member of parliament.   In a statement to the House on 21 May 2012, Thomson professed his innocence and used parliamentary privilege to name a number of individuals and claim that he was set up.

So, his vote wasn't dependant and wasn't used.  You get your facts right Love, once again you use your well honed powers of abuse to dodge the fact that you support a Government that is comprised of sleaze bags.      As for your statement "do you seriously expect any govt to leave themselves in a precarious position" it appears from that statement you condone their behaviour just because they are Liberal.    What a sad creature you are.    As for Aldi Bags, that is rich - the Chinese bought the Liberal party years ago, all it took were a few watches, a couple of bags of money and the "Julie Bishop Glorious Foundation" But, you keep voting for them anyway Love, sounds like you are in good hands, just watch out for the ones with cameras when you bend over

you are so rude... perhaps  this will stick in your craw..

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has been again forced to defend Labor backbencher Craig Thomson, amid new allegations which appear to cast doubt on his denial that he used his union credit card to pay for prostitutes.

Mr Thomson has admitted authorising the payment to an escort service in 2005 - but has said another man used the card and forged his signature.

At the time, phone calls to the escort agency were made from Mr Thomson's mobile phone, but he has denied all allegations that he visited prostitutes.

Now, court documents published by the Sydney Morning Herald have revealed the mobile phone used to call the escort agency was also used to call political and union contacts within the ALP on the same day, April 7, 2005.

The NSW Supreme Court documents also show Mr Thomson's card was used to pay $2,475 to an escort agency on April 8.

The documents appear to contradict Mr Thomson's contention that someone else had used his credit card and, by implication, the mobile phone.

The NSW Labor Party has paid a reported $90,000 to help pay Mr Thomson's legal expenses for a defamation action he took against Fairfax newspapers - money that the Opposition says prevented Mr Thomson being declared bankrupt and losing his central coast seat of Dobell.

A by-election would be likely to cost the Government their slim majority in Parliament.

Yesterday in Parliament the Opposition's finance spokesman, Andrew Robb, ramped up the attack on Mr Thomson, saying the Government's support for Mr Thomson was "sickening".

"Look at the evidence that comes out daily. Look at what we saw today from Fairfax – that he has lied; that he is a thief. Yet the Prime Minister stands up here daily and supports it," Mr Robb said.

This morning on AM, Ms Gillard deflected questions about why Labor had paid the legal fees, saying it's a "question for the New South Wales branch of the Labor Party".

"Decisions by the New South Wales branch of the Labor Party are their decisions."

And she tried to turn the pressure back on the Opposition, describing its position as "hypocrisy" and referring to a shoplifting charge being faced by Liberal Senator Mary Jo Fisher.

"There is only one member of Parliament who's been charged with a criminal offence - it's not a member of my team."

Ms Gillard conceded she has talked to Mr Thomson about the allegations, but again deflected questions saying she wants to wait until an investigation by Fair Work Australia is complete.

"In the meantime, the member for Dobell is doing his job as a local member in this Parliament." Grin Grin

Meanwhile, NSW police say they will not be investigating the matter unless they

Former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott was one of several Liberal MPs who returned a bunch of Rolex watches gifted to them by a Chinese billionaire after realising they were actually real, The Guardian reports.
