https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2021/mar/4/dr-seuss-censorship-sets-impossi...

By Cheryl K. Chumley - The Washington Times - Thursday, March 4, 2021

ANALYSIS/OPINION:

If Dr. Seuss is the standard by which all authors are to be judged, make way for the book burnings.

And bring lots of firewood.

Because if Dr. Seuss and his cartoonish characters can’t pass the anti-racism muster of the faces of the left, how can Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” or Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Little House on the Prairie” series, or J.M. Barrie’s “Peter Pan,” each with their own set of perceived and real stereotypes and slurs? Even Roald Dahl’s original “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” has inspired criticism over the depiction of the Oompa Loompas as jungle-dwellers. Let’s not forget Margaret Mitchell’s “Gone With the Wind,” in all its slavery glory, or Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist,” in all its anti-Semitic glory, or Lynne Reid Banks’ “The Indian in the Cupboard,” in all its — well, the title speaks volumes on that one, yes?

The list is endless.

The list can be endless.

Even the Bible speaks to the enslavement of various peoples.

Are we to turn off all the offensive to our ears, in some sort of — futile — attempt to whitewash, er, erase, not just history, but fancy and fiction and flights of imaginations?

With Dr. Seuss, born Theodor Seuss Geisel, it’s not just a matter of Loudoun County, Virginia, public schools cancelling the annual celebration of the children’s author. It’s now also the refusal of the Dr. Seuss publisher to print any more copies of select titles by the author because, as the statement goes, “these books portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong.”

Think about that for a moment. The publisher is not going to publish select Dr. Seuss titles because these select titles, written as they were years ago, now seem, in the standards of today’s snowflakey, politically correct, overly and eagerly offended, to be racist.

The books are “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street”; “If I Ran the Zoo”; “McElligot’s Pool”; “On Beyond Zebra!”; “Scrambled Eggs Super!”; and “The Cat’s Quizzer.” Among some of the “hurtful” images? An Asian in a conical hat, holding chopsticks and eating from a bowl. A couple of bare-footed men with dark skin wearing grass skirts.

These are chilling assessments.

This is not just about children’s books. This is about the shape of censorship things to come. It’s about a growing acceptance of blotting out all offenses, in the hope that ignoring offenses means the offenses don’t occur — in fact, that they never did occur. That’s erasing history. That’s living a lie.

“Research in recent years has revealed strong racial undertones in many books written/illustrated by Dr. Seuss,” Loudoun County School District said in a statement, following the cancellation of the regular school-based Seuss celebration day.

Word is next up are L. Frank Baum’s “Wizard of Oz” series.

Let the burning begin.

The trouble, of course, will be to know the exact point to extinguish the fire.

Let’s hope the same censors who see evil in Dr. Seuss aren’t the ones holding the water buckets. America’s history depends on it.

Burn those books.

https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2021/feb/26/loudoun-county-schools-cancel-d...

By Kelly Sadler - The Washington Times - Friday,

February 26, 2021

ANALYSIS/OPINION:

Another day, another cancellation.

Yesterday, it was Mr. Potato Head. Today, it’s Dr. Seuss.

March 2 marks Read Across America Day, a national recognition of Dr. Seuss’ birthday for more than 20 years. Now, a liberal educator group dubbed “Learning for Justice” is demanding Dr. Seuss‘ books be stripped from school libraries because of their “racial undertones.”

The Daily Wire reported districts such as Loudoun County Public Schools in Virginia have already told its teachers to “avoid connecting Read Across America Day with Dr. Seuss.”

“Realizing that many schools continue to celebrate ‘Read Across America Day’ in partial recognition of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, it is important for us to be cognizant of research that may challenge our practice in this regard,” Loudoun County Schools said in an announcement as reported by the Daily Wire. “As we become more culturally responsive and racially conscious, all building leaders should know that in recent years there has been research revealing radical undertones in the books written and the illustrations drawn by Dr. Seuss.”

Um, what? Are the Whos down in Whoville too White?

Yes, apparently, they are.

After reading 50 of Dr. Seuss’ books, many of which were written in the 1950s, Learning for Justice found of the 2,240 identified human characters, there were only 45 of color and 43 of those “exhibited behaviors and appearances that align with harmful and stereotypical Orientalist tropes.”

Learning for Justice found Dr. Seuss’ books are plagued with “orientalism, anti-Blackness, and White supremacy.” Additionally, too many of the non-White characters are male.

Book banning in our public schools has become all too common — and terrifying.

Last year, Burbank Unified School District in California banned five classic novels from being taught in their curriculum: Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men,” Theodore Taylor’s “The Cay” and Mildred D. Taylor’s Newbery Medal-winning young-adult classic “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.”

The calls to ban were similar to that of Dr. Seuss — they caused potential harm to the public school’s Black children because of their racial undertones. All but “Huckleberry Finn” was required reading.

The Woke Mob Cancels Dr. Seuss

The effort on the ‘woke’ left to ban Dr. Seuss would be ridiculous if it weren’t for the possibility that they could be successful.

The leftists’ ‘cancel culture’ is branding Dr. Seuss as racist, even though he was a liberal who penned books design to end racism. So what’s this really about?

It’s about destroying American culture.

The Marxists want not only Seuss destroyed but also Shakespeare, classic movies, and even math. They especially hate Christians and the Bible. The deconstruction-minded left sees it as hate speech. Christians and patriots are seen as terrorists and they must be silenced and replaced with transexual celebrations. They want American culture destroyed so it can be ‘built back better.’ That means socialism.

Bobby is just angry that his much beloved culture is no longer being celebrated in Loudoun County schools, dear.

You can understand why. Everything Bobby has ever loved and known - Dr Seuss, Skippy, Gone With the Wind - no longer being celebrated and promoted.

What next? Shakespeare? The Bible? Mr Trump's best-selling autobiography the Art of the Deal?

Okay, so Biden didn't light the match, but he's hardly doing anything to stop it, no?

Where are the Biden speeches and tweets, praising the Art of the Deal? Why isn't Biden marching down to the nearest church with a Bible in his hand, posing for the cameras? Why isn't Biden attending CPAC and railing against Cancel Culture and PC gone mad?

It's PATHETIC. To think Americans were once strong and free to support Mr Trump. Now they're scoffed and mocked for their love for the big fella. WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR COUNTRY?

Our culture is being burnt as we speak.

Bobby, I have it on reliable intelligence that the celluloid of all original film reels of Gone With the Wind have been destroyed by Biden. Just like that.

Can you believe it? The leftards have destroyed this cinematic masterpiece. Now I myself have never viewed this film, but I've always wanted the opportunity to, as is my right in a free society.

And no, I do not wish to stay home on a Saturday night and view it on Bill Collins' Golden Years of Hollywood. That would be PATHETIC.

Biden has taken away my history and my culture. The Bible, Dr Seuss, Gone With the Wind. Not even Skippy is safe.

What say you?

Dear brave Karnal,
Nothing from our past is safe anymore.
It's just like Orwell's dystopian novel where Winston Smith
changes the words in books and newspapers to change history.
Soon - the number of words we can use will be reduced.

You're defending racism, is that your culture?

There's nothing wrong with lynching inferior species. Why are you leftards so obsessed with skin tone?

As Aquascoot says, why not just see their tintedness as multiple freckles or a form of advanced skin cancer?

They all twitch on the end of a rope. What do their keratin levels have to do with it?

The Cancellation Of Dr. Seuss Should Disturb You, Because You’re Next

America is entering its very own Mao-like Cultural Revolution. The iconoclasm of the left’s culture war isn’t a side effect, it’s the point.

John Daniel Davidson
By John Daniel Davidson
March 3, 2021

Dr. Seuss has been cancelled. Some of his work has been deemed racist, and we can’t have that. On Tuesday, the entity that oversees the estate of Theodor Seuss Geisel announced it would no longer publish six of Geisel’s books because they “portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong.”

Among the works now deemed unfit for children are Geisel’s first book under the pen name Dr. Seuss, “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street,” published in 1937, and the much-beloved, “If I Ran the Zoo,” published in 1950. The former depicts a “Chinaman” character and the latter shows two men from “the African island of Yerka” in native garb.

It's interesting how partisan Bobby has become that he's defending racism because he's told to and has no problem with it.

Hi Mr Sad,
are you part of the Woke/cancel culture movement?

No, I grew up deeply conservative, inheriting my parent's political views.  It wasn't until I travelled the world and learned more about other people, their cultures, their struggles and their humanity that I developed a sense of empathy and my political views became my own, not someone else's, and I became more liberal.

But my views are very much guided by reality and the truth more than anything else these days.

No, I don't like cancel culture.  I've always valued the exchange of ideas.  But there are some limits, like inciting an insurrection against the capitol or blatant bigotry for the sake of it or liberal tears.

I have no problem with a private company decided after consultation with parents, teachers and the community to end the continued publication of a handful of their books to protect the legacy of the rest and to continue to operate and be more active in the reading initiative again.

This is not cancel culture.  You're being deliberately dishonest likening this to cancel culture and placing the blame with any President when it's a free market decision not forced upon a private company with any sort of legislation or even political pressure.

You need something to be outraged over because CPAC was such a disaster.  Again, the conservatives have transitioned to complain and obstruct and their supporters are following suit.

Society changes.  Things that were acceptable in the past won't always be acceptable now.  It's the way of the world.

We grow, we learn and we evolve.  A woman's "place" used to be in the kitchen.  If dinner wasn't ready when the man returned hom, or god forbid it was burned, domestic violence as a response was considered discipline.

That's wrong and thankfully that's changed.

Every aspect of this particular "outrage" has played out exactly how conservatives have demanded for decades.

It was a smart business decision by the publishers and it's good for the children.  Dr Suess books get kids reading.  There is no denying that.  We're much better off with the remaining catalogue than without.

But the reading initiative wants to increase its recommendations to be more inclusive for all children, not just the white children and a private company has reacted to that.  That's all that's happened here.

It's not cancel culture.

It's not book burning.

It's just the free market in action based on the community growing and evolving.

But you keep lying about it, likening it to other unrelated instances and having a big old cry, then you post in defence of it by using racial slurs and saying you have no issue with the racist depictions?

I'm sure you don't.

But that's YOUR problem.  You're defending racism under the guise of being anti-Cancel Culture.

You are, in a word, scum.

It's that simple.

Like I know you're just trolling and that's ok, but when you troll about the same issue over and over, perhaps it's actually an insight into who you really are.

Scum.
